International Woman's Day- School Assembly

My DH saw the no more page three Sun experiment video today (take six months of the paper, compare images of women versus images of men) and wants to use it in an assembly for his year group (11) and I suggested using IWD as a background for it.

Currently, this is his idea for how it would run:

  1. Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard and the twirl
  2. Women's achievements not getting the same coverage in the media as men- historic problem, women in history have their successes overshadowed by their male counterparts
  3. How are women presented in newspapers today? Show video.
  4. Question things- don't accept things for how they are. Bechdel test, TV presenters, calling women 'girls', words like 'bossy', toys aimed at genders
  5. Why does it matter? Sexism hurts both sexes- we're a partnership, a team, no man is an island. Women's wages, violence against women, women in politics...be the change you want to see.

Any suggestions of what could be added or good examples of what is mentioned above?

All feedback welcome!

Thanks

I wouldn't say no man is an island in this context.

Reporting of similar crimes and the differences in language used, typical poses and dress for male and female characters in movies, crime stats in general (and conviction and punishment disparities) easy stuff like counting male and female extras in a crowd scene.

To me, the counting male and female characters is a powerful one as you find yourself doing it all the time and tutting yet again as you watch something with a token women

how long is the assembly? that seems like a lot to get through. I used to get 15 mins tops once all the kids were in and notices read out.

kickassangel · 08/02/2015 03:35

but the trailer for Miss Representation would be good
on youtube

How about just focus on important issues like female genital modification, rape and forced marriages, instead of all that other trivial nonsense? It's embarrassing to see privileged feminists whinging about being called "bossy," too many pink toys or some moron wolf whistling them in the street when a grandma is coming at her daughters genitals with a rusty knife right now.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 08:48

The word you are looking for is mutilation, not modification, Magnetic.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 08:53

It's also embarrassing to see privileged males think they can tell feminists what they have to care about today. And yet, it happens all the bleeding time. Every day.

The fact that you have failed to comprehend the thinking behind this isn't women's fault. Educate yourself.

Or maybe you could spend an instructive couple of hours writing out a list, in order of importance, of what feminists should be doing.

Please also be aware that unlike you, other people are able to be concerned and to work against more than one thing at a time, and perhaps take on the interesting notion that the issues you raised might just be linked.

A statement about how you are combating female genital mutilation not modification, which suggests it's consensual would also be useful, just so that we can get some ideas about how our activism is supposed to look. Quite hoe you can deal with the issues around FGM amazes me, when you're so squeamish about periods, and think they should be taboo.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:04

"Please also be aware that unlike you, other people are able to be concerned and to work against more than one thing at a time, and perhaps take on the interesting notion that the issues you raised might just be linked"

People only have a limited amount of time so can't focus on everything. The amount of effort going in to the "no more page 3" campaign is ludicrous, given some of the other things going on, eg the 1,400 underaged girls raped in Rotherham.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:05

You must admit it appears feminists spend more energy focusing on the trivial matters.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 09:09

What do you do to campaign against FGM, Magnetic?

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:15

I don't do a thing, but that's besides the point. Topic is about OP's husband's assembly.

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 09:16

Yeah, it may appear that way, but that's because nobody really cares about the grassroots activism that feminists are also involved in. I suspect your whole involvement with feminism is making some commonsensical remarks below the line on CIF letting feminists know that you would be a feminist if they'd only shut up about stuff that you think is irrelevant because men like pictures of women in the nip and human nature isn't going to change, because if you were actually involved at any level with the work women do you wouldn't be making trite, self aggrandizing remarks like that.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:17

It's for women to campaign about such matters. I was just suggesting their energy might be better spent elsewhere instead of trivial or silly matters.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:19

Just think if he's able to reach so many teenagers he could educate them on important subjects, rather than trying to brainwash them on Page 3 etc. I hope you can understand now.

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 09:20

What appear to you to be silly or trivial matters. But you're hardly in a position to judge.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 09:20

Wow.

So what non trivial and non silly matters do you spend your Man Time campaigning on?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 09:21

I mean, OP's DH is a man so by your logic...

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 09:22

Apparently telling feminists how they are Doing Things Wrong is a very good use of his limited time

Derail derail derail

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 09:24

That does seem an awful lot to pack into a single assembly

slug · 08/02/2015 09:24

The every day sexual harassment of women isn't trivial.....to women that is.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 09:24

Yes he is a 'man' but, judging by this post, his feminist wife is calling the shots on the assembly and wears the trousers in the relationship. He wants to make her happy so is going along with it.

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 09:26

I suspect he's now off to catch up on a thread where he's explaining at tedious length how the women's refuges set up by women for women are misandry in action. So much to do, so little time.
