International Woman's Day- School Assembly

My DH saw the no more page three Sun experiment video today (take six months of the paper, compare images of women versus images of men) and wants to use it in an assembly for his year group (11) and I suggested using IWD as a background for it.

Currently, this is his idea for how it would run:

  1. Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard and the twirl
  2. Women's achievements not getting the same coverage in the media as men- historic problem, women in history have their successes overshadowed by their male counterparts
  3. How are women presented in newspapers today? Show video.
  4. Question things- don't accept things for how they are. Bechdel test, TV presenters, calling women 'girls', words like 'bossy', toys aimed at genders
  5. Why does it matter? Sexism hurts both sexes- we're a partnership, a team, no man is an island. Women's wages, violence against women, women in politics...be the change you want to see.

Any suggestions of what could be added or good examples of what is mentioned above?

All feedback welcome!

Thanks

Bollocks, broke another irony meter on that "wears the trousers" comment.

"BuffytheThunderLizard Sun 08-Feb-15 12:31:57

Which is the odd statement out here:

a) Feminists want to make all male gatherings illegal

b) The world is being taken over by Msssss"

So merely being sarcastic warrants a comparison with someone who allegedly claims "women shouldn't serve on juries and shouldn't go outside their homes if they don't want to be raped"?

No overreaction here, then.

"c) T-Rex females stayed home to sit on eggs, QED

Unless there was some clever satire I missed? "

No satire, you were probably just to busy gnawing at your at keyboard to read what I'd said - that children who's views need to be challenged won't be challenged just by making a blanket statement, as such a statement will be interpreted to fit their existing world view, i.e. '50% of T Rex's are female - but they only look after the eggs'.

Similar to the way that you have twisted what I've said to fit your worldview.

just caught up with this thread. Am left wondering why posters like Magnetic don't seem to have the imagination to join the dots……

It's really bizarre. Is it stupidity, denial, if not, what?

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 13:39

Because they don't literally want the ladies stoned to death or anything, but the idea that society will have to change how women are viewed means that they will also have to change how they view women. They're far more comfortable with women being there for their entertainment and comfort.

CaptainHolt · 08/02/2015 13:58

Maybe he could mention that a thread about his IWD assembly was derailed by whataboutery less than 10 posts in. You don't get this with other campaigns. Nobody asks LGBT activists what they are doing for straight people or tells them that their issues are trivial. Nobody berates the British Heart Foundation for not doing enough for cancer research.

AuntieStella · 08/02/2015 14:04

It's International Women's Day

How about global take up of education? Access to clean water without having to walk miles?

I remember last year hearing Hillary Clinton talking passionately about such things, and being rather embarrassed at how flimsy the 'I want there to be no difference in how people look at men pushing buggies compared to reactions to women'

"Well if you want to make a constructive point in a constructive way on a constructive thread, why not simply do that? Instead of posting sarcastically, your words dripping with scorn for the straw feminists that haunt your insecurities? And then backpedal furiously, fine tuning your outrage at being subjected to a comparison to someone you perceive as slightly more misogynistic than you? Oh, I do apologise. You are merely a 7 on the misogyny scale, how could I possibly have compared you to Osborne, who is clearly at least an 8."

Sarcasm or not, comparing me to a rape apologist is the kind of hysterical gibberish that gives feminism a bad name.

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 14:54

Grin keep em coming

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 15:00

Feminism has a bad name? Because of something someone on an obscure thread on a little visited corner of the internet? Women's equality is a fragile bloom indeed.

We'll how of we right this wrong, I wonder?

Apoc', self declared feminists who talk easily unravelled nonsense give feminism a bad name. It should be quite clear that is not the same as saying feminism has a bad name.

For example implying I believe the reputation of feminism in its entirety rests upon the exchanges within this thread, is nonsense; BTL refers to me using strawmen, which is ironic given that this forum has at any point a small army of them in it.

That statement includes your last post..

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 15:24

Grin do another

Dotheyfloat · 08/02/2015 15:27

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 16:32

self declared feminists

Who would you prefer decided whether someone is a feminist?

Good to see Buffy giving feminism a bad name with her well thought out and constructive posts. Shame you didn't understand it.

FuckOffGroundhog · 08/02/2015 16:32

that gives feminism a bad name.

Surely if anyone thought wanting equality was a bad thing, we'd naturally assume they were completely and utter twats and not worry what they thought? Confused

self declared feminists

Also how does one become a feminist without being self declared? DO we have to write to Germaine Greer for a decoder ring? How many box tops do I need to save?

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 16:40

Clearly the people who are in a position to decide what feminists should prioritise are the real feminists (like the men under all articles about feminism who know how it should be done, unlike stupid so-called women) and the rest of us are just wannabes.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 16:47

Yes, silly ladybrain ideas about a political movement which specifically sets out to liberate women from Patriarchy, we obviously have to get a written note from a man to be able to say that we're part of it.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 17:02

SGB has got some very reasonably priced badges we could have?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 17:03

Oooooh! A badge!!!!!!

Is it pink and glittery?

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 17:19

My dp lets me be a feminist Grin

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 17:23

Bless him Grin
