International Woman's Day- School Assembly

My DH saw the no more page three Sun experiment video today (take six months of the paper, compare images of women versus images of men) and wants to use it in an assembly for his year group (11) and I suggested using IWD as a background for it.

Currently, this is his idea for how it would run:

  1. Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard and the twirl
  2. Women's achievements not getting the same coverage in the media as men- historic problem, women in history have their successes overshadowed by their male counterparts
  3. How are women presented in newspapers today? Show video.
  4. Question things- don't accept things for how they are. Bechdel test, TV presenters, calling women 'girls', words like 'bossy', toys aimed at genders
  5. Why does it matter? Sexism hurts both sexes- we're a partnership, a team, no man is an island. Women's wages, violence against women, women in politics...be the change you want to see.

Any suggestions of what could be added or good examples of what is mentioned above?

All feedback welcome!

Thanks

Well of course! Petula isn't one of those unnatural women who doesn't serve her man before she goes about burning her foundation garments!

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 17:31

Well obviously, but I don't have to ask his permission to notice the oppression of women every time it comes up. So he's a goodun

ApocalypseThen · 08/02/2015 17:31

My husband lets me be a feminist if I show him my boobs.

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 17:32

Fair play apocalypse. Tit for tat and all that

FuckOffGroundhog · 08/02/2015 19:32

Dh bought me a peephole bra that say "this is what a feminist looks like" on the straps.

He's a keeper

CaptainHolt, LGBT people are still discriminated against on a large scale, especially transgender people. Western women have it VERY good these days.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:00

I agree those groups suffer discrimination, Magnetic. Are you spending your campaigning time on LGBT issues then? Any in particular we should know about?

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 21:02

Tell that to Rashida Manjoo, UN human rights expert

www.telegraph.co.uk/women/womens-politics/10767784/UN-Britains-sexism-more-pervasive-than-any-other-country.html

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 21:03

As a straight man it's not really my place to get involved with all that. I'm sure the LGBT community can fight their own battles. Smile

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 21:04

Ah but it's your place to get involved with telling women what life is like for them?

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:05

Ah, ok.

Do you pop on to LGBT sites to recommend which battles they pick?

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 21:06

With all due respect Petula, I don't think we can take someone who thinks sexism is worse in Britain than any other country world seriously. Obviously has a screw loose, given the way women are treated in Saudi Arabian countries for instance. Countries where women get stoned to death for being raped and such. Quite ludicrous really!

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 21:06

No. I was helping OP with her husband's assembly.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:09

Err, no. Helping her would've been "how about he covers some issues like rape and FGM" not

"It's embarrassing to see privileged feminists whinging about being called "bossy," too many pink toys or some moron wolf whistling them in the street "

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 21:09

You clearly haven't read the article then as it is more nuanced than that

And clearly the amount of respect you think is due is pretty low so don't bother pretending to be polite about it

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:12

What issues are left for you to campaign on, as you've ruled yourself out from so many that you feel don't directly affect you?

FuckOffGroundhog · 08/02/2015 21:19

CaptainHolt, LGBT people are still discriminated against on a large scale, especially transgender people. Western women have it VERY good these days.

so would you say the 85,000 rapes that happen a year.. We should be happy with that because people get stoned for being gay in other countries?

Because that's a bit silly, don't you think?

People who worry about campaigners against male circumcision should really shut the fuck up as they could have it worse really. They could have chopped off and sewn up, is that what we are saying?

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 21:26

I'm not really the campaigning sort tbh. But as campaigns like "No More Page 3" effect men (you know, the people who actually read it) as well as daft stuff like "ban bossy" that attempts to police our language (which is pretty bossy ironically) it's quite right that we should have a say on whether they're worthwhile. Smile

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:29

Oh, you're not the campaigning sort? More the sit around and criticise sort?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/02/2015 21:35

While I know this will be deleted....

Why don't you just fuck off to the far side of fuck, and then fuck off some more, you boring, idiotic, ridiculous excuse for a human being.

Yup, I feel better now.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:35

And if you think the campaigns are about daft, trivial stuff, then surely you are indifferent as to whether they succeed or not?

PetulaGordino · 08/02/2015 21:36

I have started a thread in this section where he can tell us what feminists should be focusing on, for our future reference. I expect great input!

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:37

For the benefit of posters after puffins gets deleted - she expressed her opinions of Magnetic's faux lethargic stance forthrightly.

Magnetic1 · 08/02/2015 21:38

"And if you think the campaigns are about daft, trivial stuff, then surely you are indifferent as to whether they succeed or not?"

No. It saddens me to see feminists putting more effort into taking away men's Page 3 than trying to get the perpetrators of the Rotherham child abuse brought to justice and other important matters.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 08/02/2015 21:42

And yet it doesn't sadden you to waste the time of feminists on here, or sadden you enough for you to do anything about Rotherham (the abuse, rape and grooming of children and teenagers is a human issue, you don't need a vagina to care, y'know)?

Byesie bye, Mr Timeandspace Waster.
