Very quietly, it would appear.

Quite Impressed that the NMP3 petition has had a record 13,000 more signatures in the last 24 hours though - something good may come out of the Sun being cunts.

Excellent post

BruceTwee · 22/01/2015 20:24

Not just that though windchime

There's F1, boxing, car shows etc etc. I'm a man and I'd be lying if I said I don't like to see attractive women at events etc. but is it necessary? No. Can we do without it? Yes of course.

I've found this whole saga rather interesting and have been left disappointed and not by the Sun, oddly enough.

I read a fair bit about the campaign and support getting rid of page 3, despite there being bigger fish to fry. I genuinely thought I understood the rationale so was left scratching my head when the radio announced that naked women were to be dropped, but they would be replaced by bikini/lingerie models instead. In my mind, page 3 wasn't being dropped at all as there would still be a vehicle for which women could still be objectified. Objectification, I believed, was one, if not THE main driver for getting rid. This seemed to make sense given one of the significant issues with feminism is the objectification of women.

How surprised I was when I started to read about all the back patting and champagne popping going on in the guardian and telegraph. Many high profile feminists and journalists were (maybe rightly) happy about the victory but I couldn't 'see it' and was left wondering about the objectification angle.

Other than TheHounds on here I've not read any articles saying that page 3 hadn't been dropped at all and that it was all a ruse, which is what I believed. All I think now is that it appears solely to be about the naked breast, which has little to do with objectification, but censorship.

13,000 more signatures? Excellent. As I wrote on a different thread, they're really showing their true selves here, if it was any doubt that they look at women with disdain.

chocoluvva · 22/01/2015 20:34

Take heart everyone - the nmp3 campaign has succeeded in getting the way women are portrayed in the media debated and talked about in the mainstream media. It's a start.

So many angry, nasty men - they must be feeling threatened.

Olbasaddict · 22/01/2015 20:37

I am absolutely disgusted by the actions of that revolting, evil rag. These shameful men have treated women with absolute contempt...what kind of society do we live in where women are seen as nothing but objects of mockery and there to be humiliated, with OUR bodies used as THEIR weapons to hurt us with. I am not sure my opinion of men can get any lower right now. It feels like a personal attack.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 22/01/2015 20:50

Sorry Bruce, but you're wrong about what the campaign is about. Maybe you should go back and have a proper look at your sources. You could even ask questions before you tell us what we think.

BruceTwee · 22/01/2015 20:53

Buffy

Maybe you're right about these boards but I read the guardian/telegraph a lot, including the articles from Jessica Valenti et al, and I was surprised that none of them really highlighted that it was a false storm. Disappointing to say the least.

Perhaps I can't 'get' it but IMHO the battle will be won when the only thing on page 3 is news (or whatever they pass as such).

"If it wasn't for the petitions and subsequent gloating, Page 3 would have been gone, probably a long time ago." What a load of bollocks! Grin The petition has only been going for a couple of years, for a start. And if you think that RM would have removed P3 if we had all gone "why thank you Mr Murdoch, how terribly kind of you" you must be pretty stupid.

Olbasaddict · 22/01/2015 21:08

I really hope women all over the UK who may not have seen page 3 as the insidious, woman hating shite that it is, now get angry and get behind the campaign. I can't get over how that rag tried to humiliate all women just for being women.

JapaneseMargaret · 22/01/2015 21:21

I'd like to think so too, but there are too many women for whom the scales simply haven't fallen from their eyes.

Hopefully this will help them slide a little bit, though.

tribpot · 22/01/2015 21:33

If it wasn't for the petitions and subsequent gloating, Page 3 would have been gone, probably a long time ago.

And presumably we would have got the vote loads sooner if we could have been a bit more genteel about it and simply waited for the nice men of Parliament to get around to it? Not their fault they had wars to prosecute and stuff like that.

As to Martin Luther King - what the hell was his problem? All that bollocks about where you sit on the bus? Just a bit of fun. No doubt they were about to desegregate the south until he came along being all uppity about it.

No I'm not comparing P3 to either of these human rights abuses but making the point that there are few disagreements where one side accuses the other of making things worse by merely saying that they disagree. It's a stupid theory and one that suggests it would be better if we would simply know our place. We don't want that place; we want a different place.

Olbasaddict · 22/01/2015 21:52

I caught Pause for Thought today going to work, and the guest was Ruth Scott, who was talking about women's equality. She quoted Sarah Grimke, and I thought it was quite apt on a day where men have sought to quash women.
"...I ask no favors for my sex. I surrender not our claim to equality. All I ask of our brethren is, that they will take their feet from off our necks, and permit us to stand upright on that ground which God designed us to occupy."

GoldfishSpy · 23/01/2015 08:57

Rupert Murdoch, for example, is an arsebadger.

alicemalice · 23/01/2015 09:16

Could we have a permanent NMP3 and media sexism group on mumsnet? I think this latest stunt has galvanised many of us. I know MN supports NMP3 officially but just trying to think what we can do next.

Good to hear, house.

Yes, the bikini idea would have been shit. But better than my 15 year old niece having to sit next to a bare boobs perusal on the bus.

That is a great idea. I feel galvanised. I always hated page 3....I remember sitting in the maternity dept when pregnant with my last baby, and a man came in with his partner and young daughter, and he sat beside me. He opened his copy of the S*n, and sat at page 3 for ages. This absolute fuck of a man was surrounded by women who were feeling anxious and vulnerable, and cared NOTHING for how we might feel at his repulsive behaviour. Not to mention his pregnant partner and his little girl.

Right there was everything I loathe about readers of this rag and defenders of page 3.

chocoluvva · 23/01/2015 10:15

alice - good idea.

Off to google today's sun to see if there's a 'page 3' girl today.....

alicemalice · 23/01/2015 10:18

Hi all, have messaged MN to see if they can let us have a sticky or group or something. Will talk to NMP3 crowd too.

There's no page 3 nudity today.

I do still think it's on its way out tbh. Think the Sun were planning to drop it quietly and the story got leaked to the Guardian. They didn't like that. But hopefully the long term plan to let it slide remains. This is gleaned from reading comments from journos on Twitter.

ClaudetteWyms · 23/01/2015 10:18

I signed the NMP3 petition and was "against" it, but I have to say that in the scheme of things it's not something that bothered me massively. Now it really really fucking bothers me, the S*n's behaviour this week is beyond contempt and shows what they really think of women.

I have even been on some S*n holidays (cheap and cheerful), but will not do that any more (I did get the codes off MSE rather than paying for the rag, but still).

Utter cunts.
