I just got revolution for 99p off eBay - result! As for the way women communicate I totally agree. You can train yourself to make statements like men do. I think or I feel are ime perceived as passive.

FibonacciSeries · 16/01/2015 19:54

I like your new name, DrBuffy Wink

Ooh. Dr Buffy. Well done Smile

kickassangel · 16/01/2015 20:31

Yay for DrBuffy.

See - I use 'I think' if I don't know, and just state the fact if I DO know (or at least, believe that I know, which may or may not be the same thing.) I also teach students to write papers that sound confident and knowledgeable - state facts, don't prevaricate.

What really drives me mad is when I say something very clearly, like 'put that there' (with pointing to the place) and someone says 'are you sure? did you think about?"

I tend to just stare at them until they finish, then repeat the exact instruction again, to make sure that they got the message.

Last time we moved house, 3 of the unpacking team were great, but there was another younger guy who kept asking a second time, or saying 'what about'. I ended up giving one or two word commands to him, e.g. "upstairs, bedroom 2" with NO attempt at politeness at all, until he got the message that yes, I did know exactly where I wanted my furniture in my house.

I'm really good at speaking clearly and meaning what I say without 'fluffiness'. Men are not always nearly as good at listening.

YonicSleighdriver · 16/01/2015 20:50

Poor Buffy.

Sofa soft? Fire pretty?

Nap good...

PuffinsAreFictitious · 16/01/2015 21:32

Yay for Dr Buffy, the reasonable feminist.

Not a big one for Buzzfeed, but sometimes they come up with a corker. I give you If Hermione Were The Main Character In “Harry Potter”

YonicSleighdriver · 16/01/2015 21:55

Fab!

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/01/2015 22:16

Well done Buffy! Smile Smile Smile

I know someone who always disagrees with me when I say "I think", even though her alternatives are ridiculous. Hmm I use "I think" when I'm not sure. Or I use "I think" when I'm sure, in the context of IMHO, eg. "I think you are wrong and you are an idiot". Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/01/2015 22:24

Ah, see, I use 'I think' when I mean 'this is my original slant on the evidence and don't you bastards plagiarise it'. Smile It's not remotely hesitant; in fact it's a stronger claim that a mere statement, because it carries a hint that you know this is a new and/or controversial point.

I am far too tentative in my writing/speaking, though, and it annoys me.

UptoapointLordCopper · 16/01/2015 22:32

I use "we think" and "we believe" in writing about other things. Never use it about myself. And I use "I think" when I talk to mean precisely that... And I say "What do you think?" when I feel defeatist, and I say "What do you think." when I mean "this is the best idea you are going to hear - if you have something better then say it otherwise shut it." I think mostly they go according to plan... Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/01/2015 22:37
Grin

I like that.

EBearhug · 16/01/2015 23:23

I do like that Harry Potter Hermione Granger.

DoctorTwo · 17/01/2015 08:55

Sorry, I was tired. 17 hour days don't suit me. I'll consider myself told. :o

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 17/01/2015 09:09

Actually I think that you made an interesting point about how ongoing conditioning in supposedly equal professional jobs affects people. You tend to think of it as an influence of wider society that your work isn't cancelling out. Or I do.

PetulaGordino · 17/01/2015 19:27

Off-topic but I have had an interesting day mordanting handspun yarn in preparation for dyeing tomorrow. I'm quite excited because I've got some natural dyes (both bought and collected) and you don't quite know how they'll turn out and it's the first time I've done this

My new job means I actually have time to do stuff like this which is nice
