Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A few months ago I posted, asking about feminism and making some generalisations, assumptions and the tired old 'we don't need feminism anymore ' got rolled out.

You all gave me a kick up the backside and told me to read about feminism. I did so, and it's revolutionised the way I think. I can't believe I insisted that we are treated fairly and equally. I'm reading Everyday Sexism at the moment and I've cried at bits, the inequality and pain that women have had to endure and the doors slammed in our faces on the basis of our sex.

Thank you for opening my eyes to the truth.

My son is certainly not a stupid Neanderthal pig, I'm glad to say

GraysAnalogy · 07/01/2015 21:51

zinafaw I'm aware of all the reasons why there are women like myself who don't identify with 'third wave feminism' but to be honest this forum is one of the only places I can come to and get some sense regarding it.

I feel a lot of women are turning away from it because there are a lot of misandrists falsely waving the feminist banner

cogitosum · 07/01/2015 21:51

Sorry misread your post.
Believing women should have equal rights to men is feminisn though. And the choice to be a sahm etc is something most feminists support.

sorry/thank you
Enormouse · 07/01/2015 21:53

zina if we assume there to be 3 billion women in the entire world, the number of women against feminism works out to be about 0.001% of the female population.

MorrisZapp · 07/01/2015 21:57

That Facebook page is a joke. Most of the contributors are religious and conservative, or obviously confused about what feminism actually is. Or they think that because somebody was once unpleasant to them and was a feminist, that means all feminists are unpleasant.

Bunch of grinning man pleasers, the lot of them.

GraysAnalogy · 07/01/2015 21:59

Bunch of grinning man pleasers

Hmm
GraysAnalogy · 07/01/2015 22:08

Instead of poo pooing what these people think, maybe think why they feel like that. Many may be like myself who have seen despicable things by groups of 'feminists'. I've spoke before about witnessing things in the US, including a feminist protest trying to shut down a male abuse survivors centre.

It's all well and good blasting them as 'grinning man pleasers' if your experiences with feminists have been positive. However when there's a growing number of women who use feminism to spew their misandrist rubbish it is easy to see why some women are turning against it.

There's actual blogs popping up now of women trying to claim back feminism, 'calling out' out bad feminists who give feminism a bad name.

it doesn't help when people like Anita Sarkeesian seem to be the spokewomen for us.

zinafaw · 07/01/2015 22:08

"When actually, pages like that prove that we need feminism right now as much as we ever have."

Feminists say this all the time but it makes no sense at all.

"Lot's of people disagree with feminism, that proves we need feminism!"- Feminist logic.

zinafaw · 07/01/2015 22:10

A lot of or most people disagree with the KKK too, so does that "prove" we need the KKK?

Ha! Who is that comedian in the picture? He sounds great Grin

TBH the anti feminism pages just cement my view that we need feminism.

I do get tired though of having to explain to people that feminism is not what all of the anti feminists keep whining it is.

I read this recently which is fantastic: www.newrepublic.com/article/120653/nerd-entitlement-lets-men-ignore-racism-and-sexism

BertieBotts · 07/01/2015 22:13

I'll bite but only as long as it's fun. Anyone getting wound up, step away. Trolls aren't worth it.

It's not the fact that people disagree with feminism. It's that they keep misrepresenting it and/or having such ridiculous arguments against it.

PetulaGordino · 07/01/2015 22:13

I'm so pleased you've found threads here useful moomin, though I'm sorry that this one has been hijacked by someone with an agenda

What you're experiencing at the moment through your reading can perhaps be summed up by "the truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off" as someone wise once said

Oh and this: A list of men's rights issues that feminism is already working on - really, there is no need for hostility against feminism, unless you enjoy sexism.

zinafaw · 07/01/2015 22:17

"It's not the fact that people disagree with feminism. It's that they keep misrepresenting it"

Your fault is thinking you are correct and they are the ones in the wrong.

BertieBotts · 07/01/2015 22:18

What makes you so sure I'm the one in the wrong? Couldn't you be wrong?

Since I didn't make up all of feminism I'm pretty sure I'm not imagining some version of what feminism is, yet MRAs never seem to have actually read or listened to any kind of feminist theory at all, and do seem to be vaguely guessing at what feminists want.

GraysAnalogy · 07/01/2015 22:19

I don't think thats a fault zinafaw I think there's faults on both sides to be honest.

PetulaGordino · 07/01/2015 22:19

The CE stuff just seems to attract them like nothing else doesn't it?

No, I think we might be the ones who have a better handle on what feminism works and what it stands for, rather than a bunch of people who have obviously never actually read any feminist authors, spoken to any actual feminists and are merely in the habit of coming on to feminist web fora telling them that they're doing it wrong.

EElisavetaofJingleBellsornia · 07/01/2015 22:29

Hi Moomin Smile

zinafaw · 07/01/2015 22:33

"Couldn't you be wrong?"

I'm a man. Men are always wrong remember.

"have obviously never spoken to any actual feminists"

I would imagine non-feminists intentionally avoid speaking to those who suggest their sons/brothers/husbands/male friends etc pigs or simpleton idiots who only think with their penis or rapists.

I certainly don't blame non-feminist women for not wanting to speak to feminists.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/01/2015 22:37

Zina is a troll... right? Surely no-one can think in such black and white terms, and be so ignorant to what everyone is saying?

Oh wait... I've been reading the Ched Evans hashtag on Twitter. Of course people do think in that way :(

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I've had to switch Twitter and Facebook off for a while. Can't stand seeing so many rape apologists bleating that he's served his time. It makes me sad for how cheap our bodies are in people's eyes. God, I worry about the world DD is going to grow up in :(
