Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

(It was Helen, Errol.)

UptoapointLordCopper · 02/01/2015 20:52

Errol Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 02/01/2015 20:53

I have nothing to contribute about work. I haven't thought about work for two weeks. Smile

AnnieLobeseder · 02/01/2015 22:41

Urgh, not only is it getting very 1950s out there, there are also a lot of very nasty anti-feminist comment being bandied about. We need a mini version of the cannon; a more portable weapon that we can carry about on the threads to repel misogynistic and anti-feminist twuntery. Or should we just set the goat on them?

Either way, FIL and his new girlfriend have finally left for the evening so I'm going to finally relax on my own sofa and breathe. Our house is way to small for an extreme introvert like me to cope when we have visitors. I can't wait to move!!!! Our new house will not only have actual sofas for everyone, but many many places I can hide from visitors.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 02/01/2015 23:09

A microcannon!

DoctorTwo · 03/01/2015 08:57

I'm sure technology has advanced enough to allow us a shoulder mounted surface to pillock missile.

Wouldn't it be wonderful, though, instead of having to respond to the same tired arguments again and again, if we could just turn the dial on our surface to pillock rocket launcher to the correct response and just fire it into the thread and retreat to a safe distance.

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/01/2015 12:32

Some sort of missile shortcut menu - press #1 for yah-but-it-happens-to-men-too, press #2 for yeah-but-if-only-she-didn't-wear-a-short-skirt, press #3 for yah-but-men-don't-see-dirt etc etc?

V late response to Errol. We live in the mid west. I teach in a private school, DH has worked for 3 companies, one tiny (about 10 people), one middling (around 40) and one HUGE corporation (1000s and 1000s). It's been pretty much the same experience with all of them for time off and working hours. He only gets 2 weeks, but then doesn't use that for things like taking DD to the doctors, or he can work at home if she's sick.

We need a missile launcher, which shoots a flower like object (some fancy kind of origami) into the thread. When it lands it will magically unfold and screech a feminist rant about the topic (e.g. Why porn is bad, why fat is a feminist issue etc.) at people. So we will fulfill the double expectations of being all girly and feminine, then a screeching feminist. Smile

Latest Penguins movie - massive Bechdel fail. Penguins male (ok, they are from original movie), North wind foursome 3/4 male (and a penguin has a crush on the female), villain male, most of villain's hench people male.

Sigh.

Boo to them Yonic

I am wondering how long it takes for the CE supporters to flood back here after the latest news...

And also re the prince A news, why are they saying on the news "alleged forced underage sex"? Isn't that "alleged child rape"?

YonicSleighdriver · 04/01/2015 15:18

Petula, I think as the female in the case is 17, she is a minor in some US states but not a child and above the age of consent here.

I saw the last Hobbit film Yonic. Bard's daughters scream and run while his son fights, although he is younger than one of his sisters. Apart from that there is a female elf, who is kickass but invented solely for cross species love interest, Galadriel who can get very scary but it weakens her so she has to be looked after by males and that's pretty much it. Everyone else, dwarf, elf, wizard, orc or hobbit is male. One female extra gets a "let's fight with our men" line, but then only seems to go on to have a go at a man who doesn't want to get hacked to death. Bechdel fail.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 04/01/2015 15:31

We went to the panto. Passed easily Grin

PetulaGordino · 04/01/2015 16:08

Ah ok - I hadn't heard more than the headlines

EBearhug · 04/01/2015 16:51

To be fair to the Hobbit films, there are more female characters than in the book, where Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is about the only one. The only chance the films stood of passing Bechdel would be to divert so massively from the original story that it would have been unrecognisable. But they filled up the time with CGIing battle scenes instead.

YonicSleighdriver · 04/01/2015 17:06

Ebear, for something like that I would like the "extras" to be female/male split even if they were non speaking CGI no Bechdel change parts!

kickassangel · 04/01/2015 17:27

one of the things I like about Battlestar Galtica was that the crowd scenes were f/m, even in the military and the mining ships.

YonicSleighdriver · 04/01/2015 20:49

Thanks, kickass. That's in my to watch pile!

What the fucking fuck is this fuckery?

"Incidents of rape are not recorded on Malta; the issue is a key theme for women campaigners, who say that the island lacked an easily accessible rape crisis centre until last year."

It never ceases to astound me, the knots Ched's fans will tie themselves into to defend and cosset their pet rapist.

So, sod it, I'm going to go and teach myself how to crochet and make a lovely blanket.

PetulaGordino · 04/01/2015 21:44

Thoroughly recommend it puffins. I have a number of things where I knitted the anger out and they turned out very well
