Feminist Pub 15: The Bluestocking hangs up its, err, stocking and hopes for a chatty Christmas and a Feminist New Year

Festive greetings!

This is the 15th incarnation of the Pub and is meant as a place to drop by with random thoughts and meandering chats, on feminist or other related themes. Anything you want to mull over but not necessarily start a thread about. Alternatively, get some booze and snacks and hang out! Lurkers, newbies and oldbies welcome.

We have a pub goat, a feminist cannon for firing at crazy sexists and we cheer each other up when patriarchy grinds us down...

My mum thinks that when men and women work they should do equal shares of housework, but she believes that women should be a housewife like her, so we end up with conversations that go something like this:
Her: Have you done the ironing for this week?
Me: I don't iron
Her: What about DH's work shirts?
ME: Well, he doesn't really have those kind of shirts, but if he wants one he knows where the iron is.
Her: Well, yes, of course, er, of course he should do his own, er, yes. Well. Erm ... How's DD doing at school?

Aaargh, can someone please pour me a stiff drink and tell me why I get so shaky when I get involved in feminist arguments on facebook? It's almost as though I'm scared of people thinking I'm a... feminist Confused

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 22/12/2014 17:04

Do you get shaky in other confrontational situations? We're all civilians (mostly), socialised and trained to be 'nice'.

Just been seeing Yves' links to stories about people not helping in violent / dangerous situations. Appalling. I'm trying to understand it, I can understand an immediate shock reaction, but really...

My first time in the pub, can I get very drunk now? I've been a bit bored lately.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 22/12/2014 17:06

Large Wine for Lightning

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 22/12/2014 17:07

They were on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/2263893-Majority-verdict-FFS

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 17:15

Oh yes I do definitely. Even with DH when I know it's not an issue.

AnnieLobeseder · 22/12/2014 17:24

Urgh, just had to defriend someone else for posting that Big Pharma are out to kill us and people should be curing their cancer with lemon juice and baking soda. No, I clean my bath with lemon juice and baking soda. To pretend it's medicine will kill people.

FFS! My tolerance for FB idiocy is obviously low today, but I just don't need my FB feed to be making me angry!

AnnieLobeseder · 22/12/2014 17:25

And Lighting, having skimmed that thread, I'm not surprised you need a stiff one! Angry

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 22/12/2014 18:40

Callindana deserves a medal certainly!

Conspiracy theories can be really funny sometimes. Not when it's life-threatening though. Are you familiar with Bad Science?

I don't do facebook, apart from the privacy issues I wouldn't have the patience. I'm not that bored! Smile

JeanneDeMontbaston · 22/12/2014 18:56

Grin kickass your mum sounds hilarious.

Bertie - what was the argument about?

I get less shaky arguing than I used to. I do get the overwhelming sense of futility on occason, though.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 22/12/2014 19:06

I only do Facebook to see photos of my friends' kids. And the friends without posting exotic holiday photos. I don't do Facebook arguments. Smile

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 19:13

It was nothing, really! Just someone posted a comment about "Yay equalism, feminism is wrong, why are women so much better" and I replied "That's not what feminism is, but okay" and then felt shaky about it.

But I was just feeling generally off this afternoon, and then I found out that my Granny has died. Via facebook :(. So that explains that feeling then...

JeanneDeMontbaston · 22/12/2014 19:17

Oh, I'm so sorry. Sad That's rotten.

FibonacciSeries · 22/12/2014 19:32

Bertie, I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

UptoapointLordCopper · 22/12/2014 19:32

Bertie Sad

I do facebook to share photos with friends and relatives. But there are always people posting snake-oil type things - drink cucumber juice to cure leukemia, eat something-or-other to ensure healthy liver, shower and wash your hair in the correct order to avoid certain death etc. The latest claim that a certain way to drink fucking water will cure cancer in 6 months. Angry Angry

SconeRhymesWithGone · 22/12/2014 19:37

Bertie, so sorry. Flowers

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 22/12/2014 19:54

Oh Bertie Thanks

So sorry, that's really awful Sad

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 21:02

Thanks, sorry for disappearing, have been burying myself in TV a bit. We weren't especially close and she was nearly 90 but was just a bit of a shock.

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 23:10

Just stuff like "Oh I never asked her about..." and the fact I know she wanted a picture from our wedding (nearly a year ago) and I never got around to getting one printed and sent, I had resolved to definitely do it for her birthday in a couple of weeks, and now it's too late. :(

I will go to bed soon, and I have a busy day planned tomorrow so won't be sat brooding on it, I'm just more sad than I thought that I would have been.

PoinsettiaGordino · 22/12/2014 23:13

Sorry Bertie, that's really sad. And a crappy way to find out

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 23:22

It was my 12 year old (half) brother who posted, he probably didn't think or realise. I'll have a word with my dad about it later, but not now, he's just lost his mum. Slightly upset that nobody has actually tried to contact me directly, but I suppose I am in another country and hardly anybody has my phone number, so it's not exactly the easiest thing. I don't know whether my sister knows, I suppose I'll find out tomorrow.

Have also just realised I can't fly back for the funeral because my passport has expired. I suppose it saves the £250 it would have cost in flights. I suppose at least I have an excuse not to deal with crappy family??

kickassangel · 22/12/2014 23:31

Bertie, that is sad. Only try to go back if you want to. There are expensive ways to get a passport in an emergency, although this is the worst time of year. I hope you can find some way to pay respect to her that gives you some peace. Thanks
