109 women prosecuted for false rape claims in past 5 years

This made me so angry. The thousands of women that can't get justice for being raped due to 'lack of evidence' yet the CPS thinks it's ok to pursue these women for reporting their rape to the police. We all know how incredibly hard it is to report a rape and the facts speak for themselves, aprox 85,000 rapes a year, 5-15% are reported, of those reported rapes, only 6% get a conviction. This is a fucking travesty but it seems like it's easier to get a conviction for a false rape allegation than get a conviction for a devastating, life altering crime? Something is very wrong here...

Oh and last thing, false rape allegations are aprox 2% of all reported allegations, similar to other types of crime.

i didn't count the 2% as convictions.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 06/12/2014 14:15

It is an indisputable fact that rates of rape in all countries around the world are unacceptably high.

Do you look at the stats around rape in South Africa or DRC and question whether they are skewed and biased, prashad?

Or is it just stats in the UK where you think they are all wrong?

If you do think that, that UK stats are suspicious, and stats from other nations not, then you might want to ask yourself why you hold that belief.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/12/2014 14:16

I prefer to refer to the CPS review, Prashad.

prashad

AFAIK the 1 in 100 figure comes from the British Crime Survey, now the Crime Survey for England and Wales. I've just looked at the questions for the latest one and here is an example:

In the LAST 12 MONTHS, has ANYONE ever penetrated your [mouth, vagina or anus/mouth or anus] with their penis when you made it clear that you did not agree or when you were not capable of consent?

This may have been a partner, a family member, someone you knew casually, or a stranger.

What is wrong with that definition of rape? It is the legal wording, nothing more, nothing less. Indeed I think it is more likely that people who have been raped may feel that it does not apply to them, so the CSEW estimate is likely to be under rather than over.

YonicScrewdriver · 06/12/2014 14:22

Yy Venus - here is the ref:

The 2006-07 British Crime Survey reports that 1 in every 200 women suffered from rape in that period. It also showed that only 800 people were convicted of rape crimes that same year, meaning that less than 1 in every 100 occurrences of rape led to a conviction.

I don't think BCS or cps want to inflate numbers, do they?

AskBasil4StuffingRecipe · 06/12/2014 14:25

"I do not believe that so many women in the UK are raped, and I tend to roll my eyes at any stats mentioned."

I do not believe that you don't have some sort of emotional investment in disbelieving the stats and and I tend to roll my eyes when your posting name comes up on the screen.

What is your estimate of the number of women raped in the UK and where do you get that idea from?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/12/2014 14:33

'I do not believe that so many women in the UK are raped, and I tend to roll my eyes at any stats mentioned.'

Goodness. Any reason? Is it the old chestnut of 'I don't know any women who were raped and if they had been they would have told me?'
Or would you just prefer to think the world is a nice fluffy place where bad stuff doesn't happen?

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 06/12/2014 14:42

Yonic if 1 in every 200 women are raped in a year in the UK, that would mean way way way less than 1% of rapists convicted.

FloraFox · 06/12/2014 14:49

I tend to roll my eyes at any person who tries to dismiss the unacceptable number of women who are raped and I wonder what their investment in the issue is. Hmm

prashad a subjective point of view does not make it by definition a false one. In all my years I've come across one false rape accusation (or at least as sure as I possibly can be it was false). I have however actually lost count of the number women I have been close to over the years who have been raped or sexually assaulted.

Now you of course may have experience that varies to mine, but honestly I can't see many people confiding in you when you show all the compassion and empathy of a brick.

confuddledDOTcom · 06/12/2014 20:55

Just noticed I had a surplus 0 in my stats - of 1,000 rapes, 900 weren't reported.

My stats didn't include the 8 women who supposedly faked it. It's also assuming that not all women who fake it report it. If all of them report it the stats look more like this:

For every 5,000 rapes:

4500 women didn't report it
500 cases were tried
100 rapists were found guilty
1 woman faked it

Or to put it another way:

If those 109 women really did cry rape.
545,000 women were raped
54,500 women reported rape
5,450 cases were tried
4,360 rapists were found guilty.

I think there were a couple of errors in what I wrote before but not the numbers for the way I did it, although I think this is a more accurate way of looking at the numbers.
