109 women prosecuted for false rape claims in past 5 years

This made me so angry. The thousands of women that can't get justice for being raped due to 'lack of evidence' yet the CPS thinks it's ok to pursue these women for reporting their rape to the police. We all know how incredibly hard it is to report a rape and the facts speak for themselves, aprox 85,000 rapes a year, 5-15% are reported, of those reported rapes, only 6% get a conviction. This is a fucking travesty but it seems like it's easier to get a conviction for a false rape allegation than get a conviction for a devastating, life altering crime? Something is very wrong here...

Oh and last thing, false rape allegations are aprox 2% of all reported allegations, similar to other types of crime.

People with serious mental health issues who commit violent crime should be detained in secure hospital type environments and treated and not released until there is certainty that they no longer pose any threat to the public. And that's what's supposed to happen at the moment AFAIK.

Don't know what buffy will say though Smile

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 18:53

Oh xposts she said that Grin

AICM · 03/12/2014 18:55

I'm not trying to be awkward, but your comment does beg the question.

Frankly:

Frankly, I make the assumption that if a case has got as far as being charged, then the man is guilty. Because the CPS is not exactly quick to charge in rape cases.

Then why bother having a trial?

AICM · 03/12/2014 18:59

This is a debate about rape. Buffy says that people with mental health issues should not be prosecuted ( I see her point of view). But in a debate about about rape then the question that will be thrown at her by men will be this one.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 18:59

lol

MEOD can make any assumptions she likes.

The reason there is a trial is because she is not omnipotent queen of the universe, and UK legal system says there needs to be a trial.

v good Grin

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 19:02

Buffy isn't having a debate about rape with "men" who for some reason you assume will make the same points you are kindly bringing to her attention.

She is chatting about an article that was posted in the OP, with a bunch of mainly women who identify as feminists, on MN.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 19:02

AICM sorry for so many posts but I don't understand what point you are trying to make.

Do you think it's useful in some way to play devil's advocate here?

I think we'd all be a lot better off if you were the justice system / omnipotent queen of the universe, meod. Which title would you prefer?

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 03/12/2014 19:05

BEHOLD!

Well many people with MHPs who tell the police "stuff" - don't give specifics - they don't actually accuse a particular person.

People with MHPs can and do tell the police (and other agencies) all sorts of things. Falsely confess to crimes (which can cause a lot of cost and distress), falsely accuse people of all sorts of crimes, and so on.

If someone is ill enough that they have disconnected with reality to that extent then they need help, not prosecuting. Same as if someone commits a crime because they have MHPs.

Unfortunately our criminal justice system is terrible for many groups of people, those with MHPs included, but that's another story isn't it?

The police often know who the locals are who come in and tell them nonsense on a regular basis don't they? At least according to The Bill.

AICM · 03/12/2014 19:16

Thanks to those who made sensible intelligent comments.

Buffy: I was a little hasty in my initial comment. Your last post is very well thought-out and reasoned. I see the point you are making and agree with you.

EMOD: You're an unsuitable person to be a juror in a rape case.

AICM · 03/12/2014 19:17

Buffy:
EMOD: A man on trail must be guilty.
Me: That's not a justice.

Aicm, that's incorrect. Every single one of us makes a judgment on court cases in process, as they are reported on in the press, say. We all know that if we are actually a juror, it is our civic duty to judge if a case is proved beyond reasonable doubt. They are two separate things.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 03/12/2014 19:20

"Thanks to those who made sensible intelligent comments."

Patronising much?

"Your last post is very well thought-out and reasoned"

Pat on the head for you Buffy!!!!! Maybe a gold star too if you play your cards right!

And MEOD - not EMOD BTW - well as she has commented on this thread that she is currently awaiting trial around her being abducted and raped, I would imagine that she would be really fucking grateful not to have to be on a jury and listen to someone else's trauma you callous idiot
