Hooters in Newcastle

I'm quite nervous posting here as you wonderful women seem to be a lot more articulate than I am. So as the title suggests Hooters are trying to open a branch in Newcastle, this disappoints me so much. However I don't feel able to concisely say why apart from I feel it is blatant sexism and belittles women to nothing more than breast and a pretty face. Is there anything that can be done do you reckon? www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/newcastle-could-set-hooters-bar-8178710

And it's not about appreciation of the female form, it's about narrowing the value of the female form to a very, very narrow set of parameters by which women are judged: big tits, long hair, small waist, youth, smiley compliant manner.

I don't have a daughter but if I did, I wouldn't want her exposed to an environment that taught her that those are attributes by which women - even by which waitresses - should be valued.

YonicSleighdriver · 13/12/2014 23:56

Good post glitter and interesting about the power dynamic.

"It's a bit like if you shit yourself after straining on purpose. Are you going to blame the person who fed you?"

Um, I like an analogy as much as the next woman, but seriously, YourKids?

xpedicure · 15/12/2014 18:07

If you don't like Hooters you could always put on your baggiest pants and stand outside holding a protest banner and glower at the Hooters employees who walk past pointing and laughing at you

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 18:10

Hi, brand new poster on Mumsnet. What an interesting insight you've given us.

Hmm
MinceSpy · 15/12/2014 18:16

No woman is forced to work in Hooters. Lots of Geordie girls were less clothes on a night out in Newcastle.

Quiero · 15/12/2014 18:21

God, some people don't half miss the point..."No woman is forced to work in Hooters. Lots of Geordie girls were less clothes on a night out in Newcastle."

And...your point is?

Women can wear whatever they want. It doesn't mean it's ok to normalise or profit from the objectification of women.

xpedicure · 15/12/2014 18:34

lol @ that pic near the top. Pictures really do say a 1000 words

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 18:35

Awww, Xpe likes the banned troll's picture.

Couldn't see that coming, oh no, not us!

Hmm
xpedicure · 15/12/2014 18:35

"It doesn't mean it's ok to normalise or profit from the objectification of women."

And it's not ok to campaign to ban adult women from working as whatever they choose to work as. If a woman wants to work at Hooters that's her choice and feminists should respect that even if it offends their morals.

Quiero · 15/12/2014 18:38

What the actual fuck are you on about?

Who is campaigning to ban adult women from working where they want to work? Confused

xpedicure · 15/12/2014 18:50

Feminists, that's who.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 18:54

Which feminists? The ones who post here, or the straw ones in your head?

Might be better to direct your ire at the ones actually doing the campaigning, wouldn't you think? Unless you have some ulterior motive for slagging off these feminists who aren't.

xpedicure · 15/12/2014 19:24

Well I see discussion here about commenting on licensing applications with the hopes of preventing a Hooters being opened.

And I have seen feminists elsewhere who want to close existing Hooters establishments down.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 15/12/2014 19:40

So, not a campaign, merely a thread where thoughts are invited.

Perhaps you'd be better looking for those straw feminists again elsewhere.

He's gorn Kim.

I have no doubt he'll be back, to enlighten the laydeez with his rapier wit again. Hmm

IlEstNeLeDivinTrevorslattery · 16/12/2014 11:12

However, some of us want our children to grow up in a world where women are not seen as objects by men who only lust after their bodies. They are worried about the effect on girl's body image, self esteem and the effects the objectification of women has on the way women are treated in general.

YY to this kim.

I am not objecting because I want to patronise or protect the individual hypothetical women who will be working there. I hope they are going into it with their eyes open and, as a PP said, profiting from the objectification that is going to happen to them anyway, because of how they look.

My objection is motivated by wanting to protect myself and all other women from the creeping advancement of sexual objectification becoming the norm for entertainment purposes.

Actually.

slightlyglitterstained · 16/12/2014 12:58

I'd also like my son to grow up in an environment where he can enjoy healthy sexual relationships without having creepy coercive power relationships pushed at him. Actually.

redmadandbad · 16/12/2014 15:08

So no woman ever has gone to a strip club lighten up ladies it is a harmless bit of fun

YonicSleighdriver · 16/12/2014 15:43

HOUSE!

IlEstNeLeDivinTrevorslattery · 16/12/2014 17:05

Grin yonic

DuelingFanjo · 16/12/2014 17:09

Just to let you know - a Hooters opened up in Cardiff a few years ago, it no longer exists. Not sure if it just didn't appeal or if it was the location but hopefully the Newcastle one will suffer the same fate.

Grin @ yonic

OP - this link from the Bristol Fawcett campaign might give you some good links to use:
www.bristolfawcett.org.uk/Commercial%20Sexualisation%20%26%20Hooters.html

Gives a summary of the whole campaign, lots of links to other resources, etc.

Titsalinabumsquash · 16/12/2014 17:42

Has the one in Bristol gone now? Good, I got stopped when walking past it a few years ago by the manager who was a massive sleaze, he was trying to recruit me as some of his regulars had given him the nod as I was going past.

My exp's father used to take him there when they were in the states for a 'boys treat'... When he was 12. Confused
