Why dress like this?

I feel very depressed that more and more female celebrities decide to dress like this. These celebrities, like it or not, are role models for many girls and I feel it sets a very scary tone for what young girls may aspire too.

I do believe everyone has freedom of choice and can wear what they want, but I think that more often than not, this type of outfit is done as a publicity stunt.

Am I being too harsh, or does anyone agree?

southeastastra, I feel I need to extend my previous lady-like statement: I irritates me that they are required to wear the kind of thing that they are frequently seen as wearing AND that TF needs nubile young things wearing v little to elevate his profile.

There is a bigger picture here than just this particular photograph and these particular protagonists.

Italiangreyhound · 02/11/2014 22:23

Spidergirl8 they are very revealing and just awful dresses and it is very sad these 'selebs feel the 'need' to dress like that and very sad that our young girls will maybe feel the 'need' to follow suit.

Spidergirl8 · 02/11/2014 22:23

The point is though, a lot of young women will aspire to look like celebrities. There are a lot less women in a celebrity role who are given air time if they do not dress in this way.
I do not think the fact it has been done in the past, or whether someone has figure to carry it off matters.

Progress would be women not needing to dress like this to get attention. How many women need to end up 'showing flesh' to boost their careers and why this acceptable as something that is just the thing to do? Sex only seems to sell if it is the woman selling it, would the guy in the picture have dressed in a bondage get up??

Isn't is strange how those two good-looking men just appear weird to me?
Social conditioning is strong Shock

PacificWerewolf · 02/11/2014 22:25

Cannot see him turning up for work in my local bank come tomorrow morning Grin

southeastastra · 02/11/2014 22:26

i really do think people hijack fashion for their own feminist agendas

it's an easy target yet people are so hypocritcal with their arguments on here.

But then, Pacific, I can't exactly see Rhianna and Miley turning up in a bank dressed like they are either Grin

PacificWerewolf · 02/11/2014 22:27

I concede that I don't understand 'fashion' - truly, I don't get it Grin
Quite happy that way, mind.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 02/11/2014 22:27

You never see that type of male outfit at for example, the Oscars and similar events.

There seem to be a rule that men must be very covered up at dressy events, while women mustn't be.

PacificWerewolf · 02/11/2014 22:28

Nope, I agree, FrauHelga - can you imagine! Grin

Spidergirl8 · 02/11/2014 22:29

Pictures on a catwalk are in a context of the fashion show and this in itself is a play or an act. When taken as a real clothing at an event, the play of the clothing and the possibility of it being something to aspire begin to mix.

Well, I think BDSSM fashion should take over the world and the men should all be scantily clad

Someday when I am Supreme Ruler of the World ....

Spidergirl - Miley and Rhianna are putting on an act in that picture every bit as much as if they were on the catwalk.

southeastastra · 02/11/2014 22:30

i think people are quite closed minded with regard to culture and fashion, it's a bit sad.

if you really want to see a comparison watch metamorphosis from the eno where a half naked man writhes around drenched in black tar.

that is more than equal to miley cyrus in a bandeau bra

Silverdaisy · 02/11/2014 22:34

Perhaps it's those men in tux's that need to lighten up and express themselves better.

WidowWadman · 02/11/2014 22:43

I used to wear that kind of stuff on nights out more than 15 years ago. It's really not that outrageous, is it?

FloraFox · 02/11/2014 22:48

Miley Cyrus and Rhianna are wearing these outfits because that's what they need to do to get profile that will support their careers. I agree with Briar that this is not a feminist choice to dress like this. This is part of what is expected of female singers, to make their bodies available for male gaze / consumption.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/11/2014 22:58

The only period I can think of when women were pretty much covered up and men wore more body conscious stuff, is the Elizabethan era. The men wore clothes that were padded to make them look more muscular and it was considered attractive to show a lot of shapely leg, (and I'm not even going to mention the codpieces).

No coincidence I think, that it was when a woman was wielding the power.
