Awesome

I don't know how old it is or anything but it is really good

I don't think we need men to "swoop in and save the feminist movement".

However I would venture that, wrongly, feminism suffers from an image problem and that Hermione's Emma's take on it is an interesting one.

TooOldForGlitter · 22/09/2014 22:52

I thought that was brilliant. I just shared it on Facebook, my first ever feminist post on Facebook. The, "if not me, who?", part of her speech convinced me to stand up and admit I am a feminist. I think she was fantastic.

WhyBeHappyWhenYouCouldBeNormal · 22/09/2014 22:53

It's the feminist rebrand!

TooOldForGlitter · 22/09/2014 22:53

I didn't like the, what about the menz part, towards the end but overall I liked it. I'm not clever and wordy but I really liked it.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 22/09/2014 23:11

Isn't it more "patriarchy hurts men too" than "what about.."

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 22/09/2014 23:15

"And now 4chan are threatening to release her nudes in 4 days time as punishment "

That's along the lines of "the comments under an article on feminism justify feminism", innit?!

EBearhug · 22/09/2014 23:21

It reminds me of Paradise Lost - "he for god, she for god in him."

She's great, and I really hope it does turn more people onto feminism.

7Days · 22/09/2014 23:23

fucking 4chan

I have loads of early 20's lads on my fb. Cos I'm cool, obv. They have all liked the UniLad link on it.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 22/09/2014 23:35

Bet 4chan are bluffing!

ElephantsNeverForgive · 22/09/2014 23:45

Yes it is more "patriarchy hurts men too"

That there seems even more pressure to conform to sexual stereotypes now than when. I was young.

Any attempt to get both sexes to see each other simply as people which the same needs and fears is OK by me.

Most men will one day have partners and children, many of the inequalities in the work place will affect them (most men don't want to get home after their DCs are in bed). Childcare costs and poor part time wages trap men too. Some revel in their careers. I know my DDad hated his job, but he didn't believe in women working. A man of his time, but hopefully not my DDs

Bifauxnen · 22/09/2014 23:48

Yeah, if they had them them they'd have released them with the others. So probably a hoax but still disgusting.

7Days · 22/09/2014 23:49

Bet they're not

You've seen what happens when women stick their heads over the parapet. And didn't she tweet in support of Jennifer Lawrence when it happened to her?
She'll end up another cautionary tale.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 22/09/2014 23:50

Oh, they'd do it if they had them, I just don't think they have them.

7Days · 22/09/2014 23:58

Depends whether she ever took naked photos. They are never your own. iCloud hackers seem to get everywhere, with or without personal accomplices.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 23/09/2014 00:24

As for nude photos, I've never understood why beautiful actresses care.

If I was Emma I'd have posted a nude selfie on my 18th birthday. With the note,

I know you are all wanking over fake photo shopped nude pictures. You may as well have the real thing so I can wear my bikini in peace.

7Days · 23/09/2014 00:44

I wouldn't have, I don't think. Why fucking pander to it. It's not about being beautiful, as such.

Why would you give even 30 seconds of your time to enable them to have a more gratifying wank? Never mind a photo shoot's worth of time. Genuine question.

Thumbwitch · 23/09/2014 03:18

Good speech.

I think I understand the name "heforshe" - trying to bring men into the feminist movement by suggesting that they need to be as much for women's rights as women are, because only if everyone gets behind the move for equality is it likely to happen.

I read a very depressing article the other day from a woman who was an ex "Quiverfull" Christian. It really highlighted why so many people, especially in the Christian fundamentalist belt in the USA, are so entrenched in the patriarchy and why it would be immeasurably difficult to change anything. The less depressing thing about the article is that she got out of it; but it's the existence of such an organisation that's so fucking depressing. :(

TheUnexpectedMorrisDancer · 23/09/2014 04:58

I'm not sure how I feel about her speech, to be honest.

I think Emma Watson is a strong, intelligent and passionate young woman, and I feel she truly believes in gender equality.

I also agree with what she said in her speech, that equality can only be achieved by women and men working together, and that men, too, will benefit from the downfall of patriachy.

But it sits abit uneasily with me. It feels almost like the carry on from some MRA's on the FWR board. That if feminists ask nicely enough and fix all of the mens problems first, then maybe they'll be gracious enough to help us.

As I said, I highly admire Emma Watson and think it was a heartfelt and insightfull speech. Maybe I'm just jaded and cynical in my middle age.

I think I'm an inadvertent feminist.

If they had them they'd have posted them by now. They're probably desperately trying to work out how to use Photoshop right now.

Thumbwitch · 23/09/2014 07:07

Well they have a countdown to a reveal in 4 days. Have a read here - and just look at the oh-so-delightful comments from some of the contributors.

When is this shit going to be stamped out? I wish I knew. I wish I knew how to stop the women who facilitate it - the ones who think "their man" can do whatever he likes so long as he stays with them, the ones who want their little boys to be cosseted and not made to do "girly" things in case they "catch the gay" or something equally asinine. The men are hugely at fault, but the women who encourage that and let it happen are sometimes as bad (I am not talking about abused partners here! Unless you consider being stuck in a 50s mindset as abuse of course)

I have a friend here. She is feisty, a strong independent woman - or so you'd think. But no - she is a marital doormat and will do anything to "keep her man" . She has 3 DDs. They are getting the worst lesson in life from her - do everything you can to keep your man happy so he doesn't leave you. (He's left twice before but she always begs and pleads and does whatever it takes, including taking a lie detector test and medication for "her problems", to get him back. Makes me sick). She's only early 30s - and there are many women like her. :(

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 23/09/2014 07:31

All that would happen then is. "The photos Emma didn't want you to see", unfortunately.

ABlandAndDeadlyCourtesy · 23/09/2014 07:32

...because it isn't about seeing the celebrity naked, it's about violating her privacy.
