Amnesty International says laws against buying sex breach men's human rights

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2545003/Amnesty-calls-legal-prostitution-Charity-says-laws-ban-people-buying-selling-sex-breach-human-rights.html

The organisation is planning to adopt a position that calls for the full decriminalisation of the sex industry, including johns and pimps.

It is tabling a paper for its UK branch to vote on that says it is a human right for 'consenting adults' to purchase sexual consent from another person (regardless of the desperate circumstances that person may be in, presumably). The paper also devotes time to that latest favourite cover-all for sex-industry advocates, 'the rights of the disabled', as a reason to allow the continuing expansion of the global sex industry with no oversight or concern from governments.

Apparently the human rights of the (overwhelmingly) women and girls who are coerced, trafficked and enslaved inside the sex industry to satisfy the demand from men for paid sex are of no concern.

Oh, sorry - Amnesty does remember to devote a whole two words to this, conceding that prostitution takes place in an 'imperfect context'. That would presumably be the context of a worldwide patriarchy that devalues female human beings, denies them education, safety and fairly paid work, and tells men they have the right to use their bodies for sex regardless of their actual desires. Not to mention, systemic racism, colonialism and exploitative capitalism.

Good to know Amnesty is prepared to stand up for the most vulnerable people on earth - male sex buyers.

I heard that on Woman's Hour too Sabrina. It was heartbreaking.

There was an interview with Rachel Moran, an interview with a victim of trafficking and an interview with a nun who does outreach work with prostitutes. This thread was in my head the whole time it was on and it think it should be mandatory listening for all punters.

Malms, Zeffa Here is your homework for tonight.

And afterwards, while you are busy trying to convince yourself that it's not your fault, it's other men...just remember it is YOU who is creating this demand. And to flip you 'well if it wasn't me it'd be someone worse' on it's head...if you weren't fucking the happy hookers, then maybe the punters who use the trafficked could? Still not something I find acceptable but less demand equals less victims.

And then maybe you will realise there are no good or bad punters...you are all in it together. YOU have put the women on the radio programme in that position.

Stop demand, stop victims.

I have learned about sex workers from their own words. Sorry, but I can't see how could I make more of an effort than this

Malms, well yeah, now try the ones from my link above.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/03/2014 20:40

Yes Kerry.

Notice how both the spokeswomen from the charities working with prostituted women were in favour of the Swedish model.

You know, malms, the ones that really know the prostitutes and help them - rather than the ones that just pay them for sex.

Malms · 10/03/2014 20:43

I have read the comments that were written while I was posting and... I rest my case.

If you guys want to argue further, please head to Saafe, the forum by sex workers for sex workers and convince them that they are being exploited and that their clients are rapists and dump specimens (who was patronising?).

Have a sweet night, ladies.

Malms · 10/03/2014 20:44

I meant "dumb specimens".

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/03/2014 20:46

Law makers should get their act straight, and make such situations easy to spot and easy to report. That's it.

Malms - You cannot be sure you could spot a coerced woman. As Flora said upthread - some of these women's lives depend on believing they are doing willingly. Also, it is easy to report now - but the punters don't. They just don't care.

You cannot extricate prostitution from trafficking - prostitution itself is what causes trafficking. Where a profit can be easily made from sex trafficking and selling women's bodies to men like you, there will be men willing to do it.

Stop the demand.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/03/2014 20:48

I've read what they say about punters on saafe. It's not flattering. Apparently a high proportion of punters can't wipe their bums properly, and leave skid marks on their sheets. [ugh] I'm sure you're not one of those either, malms.

I think we can definitely now disbelieve his assertion that he is a 'nice punter' Buffy - if indeed such a thing exists. Which is doesn't. Being a punter is inescapably misogynist.

Malms actually every women on this thread most definitely IS an insider to this, every woman is subject to the catcalling, casual and not so casual sexism and objectification that you have no idea about. Reducing a person down to their body parts, or services they can render is a dehumanizing experience.

The sex industry although you can argue is not in and of itself the cause. It is without a doubt a contributing factor.

Also please be the first punter who engages with me on this following point: Thanks to the disparity of women in low paying jobs and men in high paying jobs how in the sainted apple frosted fuck is the decision to do sex work taken on a level playing field? Until that is addressed I'm afraid all the self righteous rhetoric in the world does not make sex work ethical.

It is a simple equation really if we as men have the most money, and one of the (limited) choices open women is to fuck us for their fair share, how is that in any way morally justifiable?

Malms · 10/03/2014 20:57

Neither you do. Otherwise you would be doing something sensible, as I said before.

You cannot extricate prostitution from trafficking - prostitution itself is what causes trafficking. Where a profit can be easily made from sex trafficking and selling women's bodies to men like you, there will be men willing to do it.

Please don't mix me with people I don't know and I don't respect. I do my homework and I am sure that if everybody did, we wouldn't have the problems you guys complain about.

Stop the demand.

How? You can't. Nobody can, unless we castrate male children at birth.

Women have the right to sell sex. Men have the right to buy it. We can't mess with these rights. It is that simple.

Things can go awry, and we should look for remedies, but without infringing the above rights.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/03/2014 20:58

He might be the one who knocks us down to £20, Buffy, and then pisses on the floor.

We can't mess with these rights.

I dispute that they are rights but never mind. Why can't we mess with them ? Would the sky cave in ? Would the world stop turning ?

Or would you just have to put a bit more thought into how you had an orgasm ? Do you expect the world to care ?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 10/03/2014 21:01

No malms, men don't need to be castrated at birth to stop the demand for paid for sex. They just need to show (or be taught) a smidgeon of respect for women as equal human beings and recognise that sex is a pursuit of 2 equal participants.

malms, I'm afraid I do totally mix you up with the men you despise - I don't see any difference. Prostitution and trafficking of women are inseparable. You're a fool if you think what you do happens in a bubble and does no harm.

Men feeling entitled to sex - to force it, pay for it or otherwise coerce it from women are the problem for all women.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 10/03/2014 21:05

Rights are a social construction. There is no natural, god given, or platonic right to buy sex. Anyone who thinks so is a complete fucking imbecile.
