I support Page 3, who's with me?

This might not go down well, but I cannot accept the campaign to ban Page 3. Here's why:

There is nothing wrong with the naked female body. A woman posing with her breasts on show is not lewd nor is it harmful to children.

Hypocrisy - Page 3 is no different to male models posing shirtless in women's magazines.

Prudishness - People who claim that newspapers should be banned from showing topless women are no different to the Victorians or to people in conservative parts of the world who don't allow women to show bare legs. It's the same principle.

Market mechanisms - if there is a demand for something and a consenting adult willing to supply it, then who is the government to get in the way?

Freedom of choice - if you don't like it, don't buy the Sun!

Op why do men leer at women in the street here then? Why are 25% of women raped? Why have I been groped so many times throughout my life ? Your argument is absurd. CLEARLY freely available porn doesn't stop sexual assault.
___

  1. If you think leering is bad here, you should go to a strict religious country. There leering will be the least of your worries.
  1. 25% of women in Britain are nor raped, that is absurd.

My argument is that men have a healthier attitude towards women in societies like Britain than in societies like Saudi Arabia. If you think this is untrue, then you are surely deluded.

So what we should be doing about the global pandemic of violence against women is making Page 3 as widely available as possible?

The answer! The answer isn't 42, it's P3. Who knew?

__

Your use of the word pandemic shows how naive and ignorant you are.

You think that violence against women is something new? That it's increasing? Believe me, it's always been there. Thankfully in Western societies, conditions have improved for women.

I imagine exposure to soft porn in shops and on public transport has been fundamental to your children growing up with the idea that boys and girls are equal Buffy!

" If you think leering is bad here, you should go to a strict religious country. There leering will be the least of your worries."

Well fuck me that makes it all better then?

I shall go to India and be jailed for being raped, that will teach me wont it.

I think you should go to a strict religious country forever, with no internet access

You keep changing countries! I though we were talking about Afghanistan? Or are they just all one homogenous place to you?
I don't think the lives of women are easy in Saudi Arabia. Far from it they experience awful human rights abuses.
But that doesn't mean women don't experience sexism here. And the reason women experience less sexism here is down to the feminist movement not page 3! Objectifying women is the same whether we ask them to cover up or dress up sexually, it's still looking a certain way for the benefit of men.

AMumInScotland · 17/01/2014 14:50

It seems that there are only two possible sets of behaviour in the world then -

  1. Women wear burkas and get groped and raped, because men cannot behave themselves
  1. Women have to get their breasts out and pose provocatively to titllate them, because men cannot behave themselves.

Or perhaps we could start some sort of, oh I don't know, campaign or movement, in which we might just suggest the possibility that the ills of the world could be improved if men, maybe, just considered the possibility of behaving like civilised people and keeping their dicks and hands to themselves.

Shall we start thinking about that then? What could we call ourselves?

I had thought we could use the term 'feminism' to describe this totally-new concept, but apparently that actually means 'Campaign to let women walk around on a hot day with no top on' which I think we maybe should leave as an optional extra, instead of making a core belief?

What do you think?

Beth9009 · 17/01/2014 14:50

Buffy, on your point about correlation vs causation.

I believe that the reason men in places like the Arab world are significantly more likely to grope, harrass or rape a woman walking on her own is because they have a warped mind. Their sexual development has been disgustingly suppressed by a society that covers women up and stops them from flaunting their natural sexuality in the presence of men. Men in Britain have a much healthier attitude because most of them have been allowed to develop sexually in a natural way. They have been exposed to the sexual naked body of women from a young age, as nature intended.

Covering women up is so obviously going to be harmful to male sexual development .

One figure for you on violence against women increasing: In 2012 120 women were killed by men because they were women. In 2013 it was 140. That is more women killed in one year than the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan in 3 years.

grimbletart · 17/01/2014 14:52

Oh Lord.. I just read this thead. That's five minutes of my life I'll never get back.

Is this OP the most naive person ever to post on MN?

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2014 14:52

The poor menz. God forbid women should be the priority here.

SauceForTheGander · 17/01/2014 14:52

Why do men have to objectify women in order to have a " "healthy" attitude towards them.

What you mean is when women make themselves freely available men don't rape? Is that it?

Oh dear.

CaptainHindsight · 17/01/2014 14:52

BINGO! What about the "menz"

"Covering women up is so obviously going to be harmful to male sexual development ."

So we should all start wandering around topless at once so as to help the poor dears deal with their uncontrollable animal urges. Who's going to be the first to take one for the team?

SauceForTheGander · 17/01/2014 14:53

Ok - it's either Nigel Farage or David Dinsmore

Buffy, pandemic is an extreme form of epidemic. Epidemic is a relative term used to describe when something worsens from a previous level. A pandemic of violence would suggest that violence against women is worsening.

OP posts:
scallopsrgreat · 17/01/2014 14:54

Its all about the men isn't it OP? Their wants and desires. Which is of course what P3 is about.
