I support Page 3, who's with me?

This might not go down well, but I cannot accept the campaign to ban Page 3. Here's why:

There is nothing wrong with the naked female body. A woman posing with her breasts on show is not lewd nor is it harmful to children.

Hypocrisy - Page 3 is no different to male models posing shirtless in women's magazines.

Prudishness - People who claim that newspapers should be banned from showing topless women are no different to the Victorians or to people in conservative parts of the world who don't allow women to show bare legs. It's the same principle.

Market mechanisms - if there is a demand for something and a consenting adult willing to supply it, then who is the government to get in the way?

Freedom of choice - if you don't like it, don't buy the Sun!

I think boobs are great. Change in front of each other, breast feed in public, sunbathe topless! All fine by me. But using women's bodies to flog political propaganda like page 3 does no that's not ok! Children and adults should be seeing normal women's bodies in all kinds of circumstances, no prudeness. But right now all they see is photoshopped 19 year olds who have has plastic surgery. How is that healthy?

All the evidence suggests that men who aren't able to exercise their natural visual attraction to women (due to female sexuality being hidden) turn out to be rapists or sexually violent.'

You are totally making stuff up now Smile

SauceForTheGander · 17/01/2014 14:30

Exactly Hully.

SheffieldTosser at least came on to objectify himself and pretend to like us.

K8Middleton · 17/01/2014 14:31

Sources please!

That means providing evidence. It is not enough just to say things, you need to back them up.

Beachcomber · 17/01/2014 14:31

Beth, you are unlikely to gather support for your campaign in this section, you should contact MNHQ and ask them to move it to a more useful one IMO.

You are wasting your and everybody else's time here and I'm sure you wouldn't want that when you could be networking with others who have the sincere and burning desire to protect page 3 as a natural phenomenon and important in protecting women from extremist regimes. Or something.

Hullygully · 17/01/2014 14:31

How could you Tunip?

I hope you aren't suggesting Beth is a construct designed to get us all riled up?

To be honest if you have read buffys post from 12.36 and you still don't get it there's not really any point in trying to convince you. You've been brainwashed by the patriarchal society that approves of sexualising women for male benefit. Congratulations.

Hullygully · 17/01/2014 14:32

BREASTS - anti-terrorism weapons par excellence.

K8Middleton · 17/01/2014 14:33

All the evidence...

You forgot to add "that I have made up".

You're welcome :)

AMumInScotland · 17/01/2014 14:33

"You claim that the trend of erotic imagery in the media is creating men who treat women as sexual playthings"

Actually, no, I am not claiming that.

I am saying that treating sexualised images of women as normal and commonplace is part of an overall attitude which is harmful to both men and women.

The imagery is a symptom of the attitude. But it also normalises that attitude, and adds to all the other messages that young people get which tell them that women exist mainly in order to provide sex. That attitude damages both men and women, and makes it difficult for either side to develop healthy attitudes to relationships.

Nope. Just think about it for a moment. When I went on holiday to Tunisia, I had to run back to my hotel because I was being harassed by the men. It was horrible. They were like animals. It's the same in most countries where women tend to be covered up. The artificial covering up of female sexuality has been one of the world's greatest harms.

Op why do men leer at women in the street here then? Why are 25% of women raped? Why have I been groped so many times throughout my life ? Your argument is absurd. CLEARLY freely available porn doesn't stop sexual assault.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 17/01/2014 14:34

I don't know Hully.
Does the No More Page Three campaign use agent provocateurs?

(agents provocateurs? agentes provocateuses?)

Beachcomber · 17/01/2014 14:35

The power of breasts!!!

They protect against sexual violence and extremism!!!

Only when used for titilation purposes though!!!

Starballbunny · 17/01/2014 14:35

I also find pg 3 impossible to get worked up about.

Now paparazzi shots of actresses in their bikinis discussing wether they have, have not put in weight I would ban completely.

SauceForTheGander · 17/01/2014 14:36

Shit I didn't know that page 3 wasn't just a bit if fun but the actual saviour of women.

Beachcomber · 17/01/2014 14:38

Am too old and past it already Buffy!

Op in response to your op yes I think semi naked men in calendars are pretty tacky too. I suspect a hell of a lot more young women get their tits oit for the lads than young men get exploited though. Therefore imo it's a feminist issue.
