I support Page 3, who's with me?

This might not go down well, but I cannot accept the campaign to ban Page 3. Here's why:

There is nothing wrong with the naked female body. A woman posing with her breasts on show is not lewd nor is it harmful to children.

Hypocrisy - Page 3 is no different to male models posing shirtless in women's magazines.

Prudishness - People who claim that newspapers should be banned from showing topless women are no different to the Victorians or to people in conservative parts of the world who don't allow women to show bare legs. It's the same principle.

Market mechanisms - if there is a demand for something and a consenting adult willing to supply it, then who is the government to get in the way?

Freedom of choice - if you don't like it, don't buy the Sun!

Yes, I wonder whether she lurks too sometimes. Or whether she has moved on to more stridently feminist interweb shores Grin

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 17/01/2014 22:29

I miss Dittany too - I learned a lot from her posts. And others - SGM, and so many others.

Ooh that is a SUPER idea.

PortofinoRevisited · 17/01/2014 22:31

I hope she lurks. She had what I would think of as an extreme view, but found that really useful as it made me challenge my own thinking. And I did a bit of thinking and reading and indeed changed my own view. The OP needs a Dittany moment imho. Unless they are a bloke trying to stir, in which case it would a bit pointless.

NiceTabard · 17/01/2014 22:32

No-one did it like Dittany did it.

PrincessPeashooter · 17/01/2014 22:34

I'm interested routergirl could you PM me with your suspicions if you don't want to put it on the thread. I'm very interested in that sort of behaviour.

I think the OP is real as she is, sadly, parroting the same views as many insecure women who think feminism is pleasing a man and having sex outside of marriage whilst seeing stripping and glamour modelling as being inspirational. It is also an incredibly long game for a troll. Finally, the level of detail across many threads would suggest a full understanding of the dynamics in abusive relationships and I doubt a troll would have that level of awareness.

PortofinoRevisited · 17/01/2014 22:35

Sabrina - SGM has a great blog. I will find a link and send it to you.

scallopsrgreat · 17/01/2014 22:37

Yes I miss Dittany and SGM.

Is there any evidence that a woman dressed in western clothing is more likely to be raped in countries where burkas are more prevalent? In the Egyptian riots for example, the men were pretty indiscriminate about which women they raped. Western journalists and Egyptian women were raped. Women weren't really welcome on the streets in general.

In fact that is probably more what it is about. Women being in male spaces, public spaces being one of those male dominated spaces.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 17/01/2014 22:37

Thanks porto - I have seen her blog, but don't know how to find it again. I'll bookmark it Smile

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 17/01/2014 22:38

Actually, SGM might be on my twitter

thenightsky · 17/01/2014 22:41

I miss dittany Sad

PortofinoRevisited · 17/01/2014 22:44

And me. I learnt A LOT from the more radical feminists - some of whom were subject to such abuse here and via twitter that they left. A HUGE shame,

Here an idea, instead of romanticising the mn ole days...make your own good quote

SinisterSal · 17/01/2014 22:48

I go on SGMs blog sometimes, a great read

NiceTabard · 17/01/2014 22:48

SGM is super too.

Honest she is Grin

And her blog kicks arse.

scallops I can put my finger in the air like this and say with a certain amount of certainty that sexual offences are reduced in countries where women and children aren't seen as lesser or chattels, where there is a higher expectation of male behaviour, and when law enforcement takes such things as actual crimes and people get arrested and go to prison.

that is probably naive in some way though, obv Hmm

SinisterSal · 17/01/2014 22:49

How about

Fuck off

?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 17/01/2014 22:51

It's just words on a screen, SM. Don't let us keep you if you're not interested.

PrincessPeashooter · 17/01/2014 22:52

Purely a guess scallops but I'd imagine the only difference would be their respect for what they perceived as the woman's owner. It's like some wanker feeling you up, not taking no for an answer, calling you frigid when you don't respond. But yet when your any male you are with turns up it's suddenly sorry mate, I didn't know she was with you. No respect for the women involved only for what they perceive to be her owner. If your dressed in western dress in a conservative culture some may perceive that your 'owner' does not care so you're fair game.

scallopsrgreat · 17/01/2014 22:53

Oh yes NiceTabard I am sure you are right there. I just wondered if there was any evidence that women in western dress were more likely to be raped in those countries you describe?

I did hear a stat where the number of rapes in the UK per capita was similar to Delhi on a per capita basis. However, rape isn't the only measure of male violence and women's oppression, obviously.

scottishmummy · 17/01/2014 22:53

Fem topics had there daft period, then fortunately calmed down
I know a few left after disagreement with mnhq
That's how it goes, folk come and folk go

NiceTabard · 17/01/2014 22:53

Oh blah

She's not even here SM

Dittany was fab. There is no need for me or anyone else to "crawl". She is not here to crawl to.

FACT IS lots of women remember her, she had an impact on people's thinking. She was important to people.

I remember you always tried to get into it with her. Well. She's not here now. You don't need to fight a ghost.

scallopsrgreat · 17/01/2014 22:54

Yep good point PrincessPeashooter.

scottishmummy · 17/01/2014 22:55

And do breathe...
