Hello and welcome! Pull up a chair!

This thread started when we all decided to imagine what the perfect local for feminists would be like. So far, it has taps with plenty of good real ale, and some decent non-alcoholic alternatives too. There are comfy chairs and there's a feminist film night, as well as lots of nice feminist-friendly books on the shelves and space to curl up and read. The open-mic nights are attracting feminist singers and comedians, and we're just sorting out the feminist creche.

Old thread is here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/1875250-The-Feminist-Pub-is-Open-Chat-Rant-or-pull-up-a-chair-here. But don't feel you need to read or catch up - just jump in.

I'm having a nice cup of earl grey but there is wine mulling as requested.

What can I get anyone?

Quiet in the pub tonight. Another large one

ThePitOfStupid · 04/11/2013 21:45

Headache, sorry.

PacificDogwood · 04/11/2013 21:56

I am passed out in the corner, drooling.

Or that's what it feels like after prolonged exposure to 'that' thread.
My brain's gone mushy with some glitter and tickers thrown in - I think my posting has been spiked with mindaltering substances...

No feminist or any other sensible thoughts from me tonight

AntiJamDidi · 04/11/2013 21:57

If it's only boys that do that, someone neglected to tell my dds. They are masters (or is that mistresses?) of being annoying about being late.

I'll have a large hot chocolate with cream, marshmallows and a flake. And if there's any cake on offer I'll have a large slice of that as well.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/11/2013 22:15

It's just another sign from whatever's out there that you should never talk to people in RL.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/11/2013 22:17

My New Year's Resolution is to be a hermit. I am not going to talk to people I don't know. I shall adopt the high-and-mighty pose. (Or the don't-speak-English pose.) I've had enough.

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/11/2013 22:18

On the other hand, I might adopt the harangue-people-till-they-don't-dare-to-talk-to-you-ever-again approach. Angry

PacificDogwood · 04/11/2013 22:18

How about Selective Mutism?
I wish I had the self-control...

ThePitOfStupid · 04/11/2013 22:49

Use the "Virtual Ignore Poster" button, copyright SGM.

I forgot to use it on a thread earlier for one of our recurring guest stars and I regret that!!

MooncupGoddess · 04/11/2013 22:51

Fancy some light objectification, anyone?

www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-2479096/The-History-Girls-meet-women-building-bright-future-past.html

Double of Lagavulin please, landlady.

PacificDogwood · 04/11/2013 22:53

Nonononono, I am not clicking another link. Ever. Never, ever-ever, nono, siree

I am off to bed.
Just couldn't resist a parting shot on Grennie's marriage thread. Gah.

kickassangel · 05/11/2013 00:46

Cat objected loudly to his treatment at the vets. I could hear him from several rooms away.

I am now in bed feeling shivery and dizzy. There must be a drink to help me feel better. Whatever it is I'll have a double

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 07:34

kickass might I fetch you a whiskey Mac?
Which (ime) is stone's ginger wine with a glug of scotch.
I could manage one (although the hour is unforgiveable) as I think it might help with the morning shift. I've promised pancakes for breakfast for DS.

Only boys bothered about being late??? Absolutely not the case (of course). I think the same behaviour might be just described as "fussiness" in a girl? Leaving the house here with baby and toddler leaves me so stressed. I am thoroughly ashamed of my inadequacies in the matter tbh.
I think such a "military" operation requires a Male Brain Wink

UptoapointLordCopper · 05/11/2013 08:19

I am bloody excellent at getting us all out of the door. (Touch wood. Grin) If there is a nobel prize for getting-us-out-of-the-door-without-being-late I'd be the winner 9 years in a roll. Sometimes I wonder if I should consider taking over the world. Hmm

Actually I did one of those silly Baren-Cohen type test - turns out my brain is neither male nor female. Confused

TiggyD · 05/11/2013 08:22

Could I just ask how high the ceilings are in this pub? I'm 6'2" without heels so in a lot of pubs I have to walk round holding a hand up in front of my head as a guard against banging it on a beam or whatnot. 'Tis a health and safety issue.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 08:43

Tiggy I was hoping they were low so 6'4" DH couldn't follow me in here to ask where I've left the nappies/ milk/ gin. Grin
But a 6'6" doorframe is needed for your elegant stature. So it shall be so.
Could you please sit on a low chair so as not to make me feel inferior? Wink

TiggyD · 05/11/2013 08:53

Low chairs are no problem. I've always though bar stools to be a most unnatural type of seat. They're against nature. Humans should not mock gravity by perching so precariously atop thin wooden structures such as bar stools.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 09:32
Grin Mocking so often comets before a fall.
TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 09:33

Cometh

youretoastmildred · 05/11/2013 09:54

Ugh no bar stools. My legs are too short for them and I look like a toddler climbing on and off the sofa when I have to use them. If tall people don't like them either then they are officially no use at all.

About this "mumsnet" thing. "Parenting" site, MNHQ keep saying. But I am always meeting women on here without children. Though sometimes they are interested in children, often they seem to be here just because they want to talk to other women. I also keep meeting men on here, but less often; and where I bump into them they don't seem to talk about their children much, whether or not they are parents (if I even know if they are parents); and you know what, whether they would admit it or not, and whether for positive or negative reasons, they seem to be here mainly because they want to talk to women too. Either they are atrocious trolls who like trying to humiliate and belittle women, and like attention from women; or they are engaging in a more honest and pleasant way but they are enjoying a particular dynamic that you more often get in a group of mainly women and don't get in groups of men, or mixed groups which are de facto dominated in terms of the vibe by having men in them.

So I don't know why we keep carefully told that this is a parenting site. It's modus operandi and USP is about being a women's space. Being named for "mums" it makes women come; and that is what makes it what it is; and while this doesn't mean men shouldn't come I think that it is, ahem, disingenuous, not to recognise what this place is and what job it does.

and you know what? I think the reason why is related to a more general weird squeamishness that MNHQ has about feminism.

Sorry to barge in with all that, I just had it running round in my head for a day and decided to share. Thanks.

I'll have a green tea, please!

Grennie · 05/11/2013 10:54

I agree Mildred. But then I think the fact that it is a site for mums, keeps it mainly women only.

It always seems much more a vaguely left wing and vaguely feminist site to me. Not just when we actually talk about feminism.. But in the fact that women are encouraged not to put up with shit from their DP's. And that actually is quite rare

TiggyD · 05/11/2013 10:55

I agree. It's so much more than a "Mums' site about parenting" now. From Pets to Politics. From Buggies to Business Startups.

For everybody about everything!

EldritchCleavage · 05/11/2013 11:07

Hot buttered rum please.
I read the intersectionality query upthread yesterday and it made me cross for the rest of the day. I'm not even sure why, I have to try and unpack it.

Grennie · 05/11/2013 11:53

Might change my name to easilyoffended or getsknickersinatwist. Apparently saying that you think golliwogs are racist, is just looking at things to get offended about.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 05/11/2013 11:56

Hot buttered rum? Explain that delicious sounding concoction for me please.
