Hello and welcome! Pull up a chair!

This thread started when we all decided to imagine what the perfect local for feminists would be like. So far, it has taps with plenty of good real ale, and some decent non-alcoholic alternatives too. There are comfy chairs and there's a feminist film night, as well as lots of nice feminist-friendly books on the shelves and space to curl up and read. The open-mic nights are attracting feminist singers and comedians, and we're just sorting out the feminist creche.

Old thread is here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/1875250-The-Feminist-Pub-is-Open-Chat-Rant-or-pull-up-a-chair-here. But don't feel you need to read or catch up - just jump in.

I'm having a nice cup of earl grey but there is wine mulling as requested.

What can I get anyone?

Great flowchart, it confirms that not only I but also DH are feminists. He was quite surprised Grin.

I struggle with intersectionality - it makes my brain hurt because it seems a bit like the 'chicken or egg' question to me. Sometimes. And I also have my doubts whether having a hierarchy of '-isms' is helpful to resolving glaring, horrible inequality. It is horrible that 'White man rapes black woman' gets reported/investigated/prosecuted/punished less than 'Black man rapes white woman' or 'man of one race rapes woman of same race', but surely the rape is the unifying issue here, not race??

Ack. It shouldn't matter. The rapist should be convicted, not the white/black/purple with yellow dots man.

The rapist should be convicted, not the white/black/purple with yellow dots man.

This.

Oh gosh, I made a proper feminist statement, as ratified by LRD

Honestly, that means something to me because I find myself doubting myself on these issues because I am so badly read on the subject.

PacificDogwood · 01/11/2013 21:03

Too many 'myselfs' - I need an editor Blush

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/11/2013 21:05

Grin at pacific.

God knows, I'm badly read. I'm not good at all on academic feminism, but MN has got me better at feeling confident practical experience is pretty good too. But I think that's fine, surely? We need a bit of both.

Btw, just saying - I'm off on holiday (yay!), so will go silent for a bit. Smile

Someone else will have to get behind the bar, I think.

Yes very true. I go to a pub quiz every week with some female friends

YoniMatopoeia · 01/11/2013 21:40

OK - my joke...

What did the inflatable teacher say to the inflatable pupil who brought a drawing pin into the inflatable school?

Grennie · 01/11/2013 21:40

Do you have a point?

But most of all, you have let yourself down

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 21:44

The rapist should be convicted, not the white/black/purple with yellow dots man.

Yeah that's kind of how I felt, but also thought maybe there is more to it that I am missing it as looking at it from a white perspective.

Also often abuse of black men is highlighted, and not the abuse of black women. Did you know for example that black women were lynched as well as black men?

Actually I did... but only learned it in the past few months! because no, it doesn't seem to be highlighted or considered as important for some reason.

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 21:45

rubbish kim! Grin

YoniMatopoeia · 01/11/2013 21:45

I did a school one, just for you Kim :)

Grennie - yes that is the completion of the punchline

Grennie · 01/11/2013 21:47

I got the punchline. I never guess punchlines. Grin

msrisotto · 01/11/2013 21:47

Therealamandaclarke sure, it wasn't very in depth as with all pub talk where you want to remain friends afterwards, you tend to agree to disagree before someone gets huffy!

My otherwise intelligent fiend was arguing that burlesque/pole dancing/stripping etc are not in themselves misogynistic acts, so long as the women people performing them are not under any coercion and it is their choice.

I argue that we live in a patriarchal society where women are demeaned and objectified by being valued primarily as sex objects. Particularly prostitution where most women are brought into it as children and are controlled by pimps. The women are more often than not poor with little else on offer to earn money. We cannot extricate ourselves from society therefore in my opinion, stripping etc are never truly free choices and even if they were, those acts would still be anti-feminist. The fact that they are repackaged as fun forms of exercise doesn't make them any better.

Grennie · 01/11/2013 21:49

Also there was an outcry about Travoyyn Martin, but hardly any publicity about Marissa Alexander.

There are lots of examples to show that black men do still have male privilege and their needs and their poor treatment, is noticed way more than those of black women.

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 01/11/2013 21:49

Ooh. Are we doing jokes? Can I do DD1's favourite? Bear in mind that she is 4.

What do penguins eat for lunch?

AntiJamDidi · 01/11/2013 21:50

I don't know much about intersectionality. I don't really know very many people who are not white, at least not irl. I know that women of colour have a load more problems to deal with than we do as white women, but I don't know any of them closely enough to ask them about it if that makes sense.

My joke: What did the zero say to the eight?

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 01/11/2013 21:51
