5madthings · 25/06/2013 23:46

Ha ha loving this guy, read the bill to me SLOWLY so I can understand it! Grin

5madthings · 25/06/2013 23:49

Right off to bed but shall check in overnight.

MmeLindor · 25/06/2013 23:51

Yes, sniggered at 'read the bill slowly'.

bouncychair · 25/06/2013 23:52

Why did she have to start talking so early?

5madthings · 25/06/2013 23:54

Me too but she wasn't allowed to read the bill :( she is doing so well tho, rooting form her but from the comfort of my bed!

5madthings · 25/06/2013 23:55

Grr another point of order being raised.

HerrenaHarridan · 25/06/2013 23:55

I have no clue what is going on here and in shamelessly bookmarking to figure it out in the morning Smile

MontanaW · 26/06/2013 00:00

Newcomer here. Hope you don't mind me barging into the thread, but someone earlier was asking about the law that is being filibustered.

In addition to outlawing all abortions after the 20th week, it would require doctors providing abortions to have privileges at all hospitals within 30 miles of their offices, would ilmit abortions to surgical centres and require doctors to monitor nonsurgical abortions

Planned Parenthood says that 37 of the 42 clinics that currently provide abortions in Texas would have to close if this bill is passed.

MontanaW · 26/06/2013 00:02

Yes, 5madthings. Midnight in Austin is 6 am in the UK.

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 26/06/2013 00:02

Oh, that's really scary. Sad

So effectively there'd be five centres in the whole state? Cos that's going to work well.

5madthings · 26/06/2013 00:05

Yes its the details of the bill and the effect it will have that makes it really scary. plus am i right that some hospitals already refuse to affiliate with/work in partnership and provide care for places that providevabortion, often on religious grounds?

GibberTheMonkey · 26/06/2013 00:07

I keep willing her to slow down talking

Justfornowitwilldo · 26/06/2013 00:10

Yes. There would be 5 centres left in a state that's more than five times the size of England.

5madthings · 26/06/2013 00:13

Tbh given the size of texas 42 clinics doesnt dound that many anyway! Given travellingvtimes and distances etc.

And yes speak slowly.... Tho can she get told off for talking too slowly?

I missed the outcome of the last point of order, is there still only one against her and one against the other bloke but that doesnt affect her?

ThirdTimesABrokenFanjo · 26/06/2013 00:14

Shes repeating herself!

Justfornowitwilldo · 26/06/2013 00:14

The Catholic Church is a huge provider of healthcare in the US.

Wiki

'The Catholic Church has is the largest private provider of health care in the United States of America. During the 1990s, the church provided about one in six hospital beds in America, at around 566 hospitals, many established by nuns. The church has carried a disproportionate number of poor and uninsured patients at its facilities and the American bishops first called for universal health care in America in 1919. The church has been an active campaigner in that cause ever since. In the abortion debate in America, the church has sought to retain the right not to perform abortions in its health care facilities. In 2012, the church operated 12.6% of hospitals in the USA, accounting for 15.6% of all admissions, and around 14.5% of hospital expenses (c. 98.6 billion dollars). Compared to the public system, the church provided greater financial assistance or free care to poor patients, and was a leading provider of various low-profit health services such as breast cancer screenings, nutrition programs, trauma, and care of the elderly.'

What this women is doing, what is required of her, in order to stand against this attack.on the rights of women, is heroic.
Thank you, MmeLindor for starting this thread, otherwise, I, for one, would still be in ignorance of her heroic actions.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/06/2013 00:19

Unfortunately, the video won't work for me but

GO WENDY! GO WENDY! GO WENDY!

Amazing woman.

5madthings · 26/06/2013 00:20

Repeating hersekf a bit must be ok? My live kink isnt working an error with it or something?

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/06/2013 00:21

And thank you MmeLindor, I'm another who didn't know anything about this.

MontanaW · 26/06/2013 00:23

Yes, most hospitals refuse to grant privileges to doctors who perform abortions. Many do so for religious reasons I don't have any numbers to hand, but the Catholic Church owns major hospitals all over the US. In the Pacific NW, it is becoming virtually impossible to find a hospital that isn't either owned by the Catholic Church or affiliated with the Catholic Church in some way. The Methodist and Lutheran Churches are also major healthcare providers in the US.

Justfornowitwilldo · 26/06/2013 00:25

It would mean that the poorest women in rural areas would find it even harder to access abortion services.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 26/06/2013 00:26

Thanks for this link, Mme, I'm up all day (it's 9am here) so I'll be cheering her on.
