Ok. Here goes.

Apologies if I have offended anyone with my posts since I started using the site. I certainly didn't mean to.

I am all for equality, be it based on sex, race, sexuality, or whatever subculture you area member of.

I have been surprised at the level of vitriol aimed at me because of my (rather poorly worded )comments.

I understand that in every fight for equality there will be those for who the fight is an ever consuming thing. And there will also be those who have been down trodden for so long they will snap at the slightest thing against them. And that there will be those who feel that because they have been oppressed for so long it is their right to be in a dominant position.

For those that want to tip the balance in the opposite direction, I will always disagree. Equality is what we should aim for in all walks of life. These are those who I referred to when I said taking things too far - for promoting something other than equality.

But for the other groups, should I walk on eggshells for fear of offending them, or should say my piece, apologise if I offend, and carry on.

Or am I completely wrong in viewing feminism as a fight for equality when it is actually a fight for women to be in a dominant position over men.

I hope I get some answers here - I certainly don't want a repeat of the last 24 hours. Thanks all.

Studies has shown taller man have an advantage in the dating pool.

What studies? In Closer? A quick look around you will show that plenty of short men are married with children and plenty of tall men are not.

because the reasoning is women prefer a dick, then why should they change.

That's not reasoning, it's stupidity.

JoTheHot · 22/05/2013 20:32

You can call anything you like, but calling biology misogynistic is a naturalistic fallacy pure and unadulterated.

I never said anything even approaching men are evolved to work in banks. It perhaps explains your antipathy to science that you read into it so much more than was actually said.

Females, including women, have evolved to derive more pleasure from caring for their offspring than males. This follows inevitably from the basic biology that males have a higher capacity to reproduce than females, and thus caring for an offspring has a higher opportunity cost to a male than it does to a female.

Where is the harm in different groups of people finding reward in different occupations? Misogynistic and patronising, my arse.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 22/05/2013 20:47

The harm is that women nowadays get saddled with all the childcare/housework, when they might not want to accept this role anymore.

FloraFox · 22/05/2013 21:04

If I can speak for Prom she didn't say biology is misogynistic rather that your assumptions and interpretations that you are laying over your knowledge of biology are misogynistic and patronising and bullshit. And, I'll add, unproven.

arsenaltilidie · 22/05/2013 21:40

No sorry it is not Closer, they are plenty of studies but this one is one of them.
BBC summaries it better
UCL review, but with links to the hard numbers

my point is height has AN ADVANTAGE and you cant deny that.
Anyway it doesn't take a genius to figure out most couples are made up of a TALLER man and a SHORTER woman.

because the reasoning is women prefer a dick, then why should they change.
Its not stupid if there is some truth to it. You cant just dismiss something because you don't agree with it.

Its not the answer to everything, but the more people know about how 'chemistry' works the better.

Arsenal this first link is useless, there are no figures or indications of methodology or any other relevant factors. There is also another scientist disputing the significance of the study on the point the article is trying to make.

The second link does not mention a connection between height and having children in its key findings. This is an epidemiological study, it has nothing to do with evolution or women's preferences. A key principle of epidemiological studies is that *correlation does not imply causation" - that is a very important point.

Re women preferring men who are dicks, I don't believe it is the case for the vast majority of women. Almost all the men I know who are dicks are single or divorced.

Being single is not really a bad thing.
Funny enough most dicks are know fuck anything with a skirt.
These guys who can hold a conversation, nothing weird about them, they are just cocks.

Didn't realise the second study link didnt have all the 50 pages. First link was to summarise If you cant be bothered to read 50 pages of the 1958 study. Well I cant be arsed to find the whole 50 page study online.

well here is a shorter one. But it also discuss why humans have larger penis funny enough.

I don't know why we are arguing about height, because you dont need to be a genius to know it is an ADVANTAGE to be taller in the dating world.

Which brings why, well you know who cares.
Dont date dicks...

FloraFox · 23/05/2013 16:35

arsenal we're talking about height because you tried to bring it and evo-psych theory into this discussion. Have you forgotten that? Having failed to back that up with anything, you're now back at talking in circles. Shame, I thought we were about to have an intelligent discussion.

lemonmuffin · 23/05/2013 16:39

Evolutionary-psychology makes huge amounts of sense.

It explains so much of what I have been struggling to work out over the last 25 years.

It only makes sense if you buy into gender stereotyping and haven't considered how we are socialised into gendered behaviour from before the moment we are born until the moment we die.

FloraFox · 23/05/2013 18:50

Exactly this. Everything about evo-psych is circular or relies on assumptions based on gender stereotypes and our cultural framework.

arsenaltilidie · 25/05/2013 02:12

Flora given that its common knowledge being a tall man is an advantage.
I honestly thought you were being funny by asking for proof.

Whenthered women chose who they mate have sex
I THINK given a choice of earning money or raising children more women would choose to raise children and more man would choose to earn the money.
I think what went wrong is taking that choice away.
Ie. a women should be free to work or stay at home without being forced by society.

BasilBabyEater · 25/05/2013 09:42

Actually for most of history in most societies, women haven't chosen who they mate with. The men who owned them chose for them.

It was completely pointless men evolving to have characteristics attractive to women, seeing as how they constructed a society where it wouldn't make any difference anyway - even the most unfortunately evolved of them would get a woman because that's the way they organised human society.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 25/05/2013 09:43

Gosh, arsenal, you were a busy poster overnight.

Humans over time have got taller so it may be that being a tall female or male may be an advantage in mate selection. Or it may be down to ever improving nutrition. Or a whole host of factors.

By the way, what exactly do you mean by "a tall man" and in which society are you referring to this advantage? I found some data for the US, where the median male height was 5ft 8.5 and the distribution was such that 80% of men were taller than 5ft 6.

FloraFox · 25/05/2013 11:11

Arsenal you said:

Most women do prefer stronger and taller guys, you cant even deny it yourself. That is why men are bigger and taller.

I asked you for evidence for your proposition that men are bigger and taller because women prefer stronger and taller guys. Your words.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 25/05/2013 12:11

Men and women are both growing taller with each generation because of improved nutrition.
