Who is part of the patriarchy?

When we use the term patriarchy, do you think that the men you know are part of the patriarchy? And if no, then who is part of the patriarchy?

"Okay Feminism 101, because whatever you say you obviously do need this."

Wow, Eats. How to make friends and influence people.

There are women on this thread who are extremely well read and informed about feminist theory. Did you really mean to be so utterly patronising?

Even I, the Feminist with L plates, took a deep breath at that.

MiniTheMinx · 01/10/2012 21:07

Christ are we back to sleeping with the enemy? well it's great actually. I can no more be a lesbian than I can be prime minister or shit in the queens handbag.

Hullygully · 01/10/2012 21:08

Look Eats, you know how you said you only got radfeminised recently? And are learning and stuff? You are in the rage rage rage stage where raging is enough before processing starts. And that's ok, but you are going to get these reactions...

MmeLindor · 01/10/2012 21:08

I am drinking champagne cause, as of today, I am a published author.

Portofino · 01/10/2012 21:09

I am part of the Patriarchy. Wifework and the Equality Illusion should be set books in all schools imho. I went off for the weekend, after reminding my nearest and dearest of a whole list of stuff.

MiniTheMinx · 01/10/2012 21:10

Oooh well done MmeLindor ,

Do we get to know what the title is?

ShirtyKnot · 01/10/2012 21:12

Repeating your point, but in slightly different words in a slightly different order still doesn't make you right, eats.

habbibu · 01/10/2012 21:12

And linguistics 101, to borrow the terminology - definitions are social constructs too, subject to debate, refinement and change over time.

Mme woop woop! Well done!

Eleanor, is it any good?

I'm watching ashes to ashes. I fancy gene. And want to cry because of it.

habbibu · 01/10/2012 21:14

And yy, hully. I really do want to know how the future wd be pictured is we accepted this premise.

MmeLindor · 01/10/2012 21:15

Mini
It is a little book about Twitter, and is is called Learn Twitter in Ten Minutes.

Cause you can, like, learn twitter in ten minutes.

:)

sooooooooooooooooo. Champagne. Is it feminist? Is it part of the partriarchy? Cause I have a whole bottle of the stuff and no one to drink with me.

You do NOT lack substance, Eleanor. Wash your mouth out with soap.

Congratulations, mmel!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/10/2012 21:30

Wow, I missed my place having a minor crisis.

But, I do believe the patriarchy is systematic oppression of women.

But women are not outside it - women are part of patriarcial society.

MmeLindor · 01/10/2012 21:31

Thanks, Hab.

You know, it was the Wankers threads that gave me the confidence to write.

Sorry, am totally hijacking this thread, but for me this is what feminism is - that a group of women who had never met me gave me the boost to do something different with my life.

Its not JK Rowling success (DH lives in hope, the poor lad) but it is a good feeling.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 01/10/2012 21:32

That is pretty cool Mme (not least the not being JRK bit Wink).

MiniTheMinx · 01/10/2012 21:34

Cheers everyone.

V Interesting, I need to learn how to tweet. I am building a website at the mo, will need to start tweeting soon.

Portofino · 01/10/2012 21:39

I love it! MmeLindor - trailing expat spouse. She is not oppressed by the patriarchy. She built her OWN career around the constraints in her life. Used them, built on them, created a fantastic resource for the tweenies, writes a fantastic feminist friendly blog. Now - published author. I think she is most excellent and a wonderful example of what us women can do if we put our minds to it, rather than sniping and trying to undermine others.

Let me know if you need advice

Just wrote something about women in Africa, but MN went down for a moment.

The conversation about women in Africa interests me. I was in Kenya this summer and the women there are horribly oppressed.

They passed a law a couple of years back to ban sexual assault, but haven't got around to implementing it.

I think it was 40% of young girls reported that their first sexual experience was non-consensual.

Even the woman that we got take to see - Sarah Obama Onyago (the step gran of Barack) who was held up as a symbol of feminism - she told us that if a wife were to be disobedient, then her man should be allowed to beat her.

And Kenya is one of the more westernised countries. Would love to know if there are countries in Africa where women are treated better, and how it came about.
