Who is part of the patriarchy?

When we use the term patriarchy, do you think that the men you know are part of the patriarchy? And if no, then who is part of the patriarchy?

Of course removing men from our societal system is never going to happen and quite frankly, who would want to.
But it would be nice if we could all live in a system where by men and women were treated equally, where the strengths and weaknesses of our different biologies were recognised but not seen as a reason to categorise and discriminate.
Very utopian, I know!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 16:53

Basic feminism, princess (now that's a phrase we don't hear enough).

But, I agree, well said!

To be fair, yep, I take it back ... Jeremy Clarkson is part of the patriarchy! But then, I'm not convinced he's human ...

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 29/09/2012 16:57

All men are part of the patriarchy, not just men you dont like.

Cultural feminists and Radical separatists might like to think that in some way they can live outside of it. Nice idea maybe but to boil all oppression and antagonism down to biology and think you can circumvent the very thing you hold in very high esteem is clearly wrong headed. Unless you perceive a state of constant revolution as both the means and the end point to be your objective. Then you have the whole socialisation question......if the antagonism is caused by basic biology then socialise all you like, reconstruct as you will, all out separatism might be the only answer.

Do I think biological difference accounts for and explains all oppression? No and I don't think all men are fully paid up members of the patriarchy.

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 29/09/2012 16:58

Jeremy Clarkson is such a charicature (sp?) I just cannot take him seriously. Him and that horse commentator that got into bother a few years ago - John McCririck?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 16:58

Eats, insofar as all men are part of the patriarchy, so are women. And children. It's a social structure.

Did you read my link to a simple definition? It will help answer your initial question.

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 29/09/2012 17:00

So even my DP EatsBrainsAndLeaves, who is actually more feminist than me and calls people out on their sexism and has stood up and been counted over his equality principles, he's a member of the patriarchy?

That is totally and utterly ridiculous. And I personally find it offensive to my DP.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 29/09/2012 17:01

LRD the patriracy is a system of how men oppress women as a class. Women are not part of the patriarchy - they are the ones oppressed by it.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:02

So, if you consider all men to be part of the patriarchy, why start this thread?

And again, we are all part of it, which is why every voice is important.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 17:02

We all live within a patriarchial society. Better to say, 'I am sometimes part of the patriarchy and I will fight that' that to start trying to work out who is more part of the patriarchy than you.

OTOH, we can say who's most benefitted by the patriarchy, and that is men more than women.

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 29/09/2012 17:02

Well, EatsBrainsAndLeaves, seems to me you knew the answer to your question so what was the point of this thread, if it wasn't to shit stir?

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:03

And you think all men oppress women?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 17:04

eats - honestly, I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here.

You're correct that the patriarchy is a social system in which men oppress women. But I think you're confused as to how that translates into descriptions of individuals.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 17:04

mydog - not, that's unfair, she is confused but we all start out being confused.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:06

Exactly lrd. Eats is new to feminism (like me) there's no shame in admitting you got iit wrong, rather than just offending people.

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 29/09/2012 17:06

The question was "who is a part of the patriarchy"

EatsBrainsandLeaves posted

"All men are part of the patriarchy, not just men you dont like"

she knows in her head what her answer is and I dont' see much point in getting any more invested in this thread.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 17:07

I don't think you have got anything wrong at all, cuervo.

And eats isn't a million miles off - she's just using a definition of 'patriarchy' that's in general usage, but it has a specific meaning in feminism which is slightly different.

MiniTheMinx · 29/09/2012 17:09

What about women who oppress women. Working class women are exploited under patriarchy but who gains? Not just men. Put another way 50% of the population is female....they are oppressed because of their sex. 10% of women gain by oppressing the other 90% through capitalism and they gain significantly by doing so. 50% of the population is male, 10% of them oppress the other 90% who are both male and female. I conclude the road to freedom is weeding out those 10% of that 50% that is male, that would end ALL forms of oppression.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/09/2012 17:11

Absolutely agree mini, about class. And also race.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:12

Mydoig, I think you have a point, but if we assume that the op is trying to be an offensive goader, its handy to get the definition nailed.

Lrd, aw thanks. What I mean is, we all revise our opinions. Ii didn't understand the piv argument until it was explained. Sometimes you need a bit of grace.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:13

Mini. Great point.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 29/09/2012 17:14

isnt trying to be. Sorry.
