Talking about this on the Relationships board. Does anyone remember this woman from the 60's/70's who set up an early(?) refuge? Are her work and writings still valid today, or discredited at all, anyone have any knowledge? I may not be spelling correctly.

I'm just amused by the idea that Sigmund thinks Wendy McElroy is a feminist.

Nyac · 11/04/2012 22:40

Nope, they can't. But they don't like to admit that's what they are. In fact they get really really angry when feminists point it out and start claiming we're mean for stating the bloody obvious.

Why people can't just be honest about their political positions is beyond me.

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 22:40

Well it's rather good to have a feminism of individualism. As that's what we are, aren't we.

Nyac · 11/04/2012 22:41

"fembots"

Excuse me?

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 22:42

I named myself SigmundFraude in honour of you actually Smile

AnyFucker · 11/04/2012 22:42

I am amused at Sigmund full stop

Nyac · 11/04/2012 22:43

Nope, SF, politically in feminism, women are a class. If you don't see us as a group with shared political experiences, and shared experiences of oppression and inequality then there's no point in feminism.

Why do you think McElroy is a feminist, apart from "she says she is, so she must be one"?

Nyac · 11/04/2012 22:44

Erin wanted to promote her new book at one point in this section.

Cheeky, eh? Given how little respect she has for feminists.

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 22:44

'I'm just amused by the idea that Sigmund thinks Wendy McElroy is a feminist.'

Well she says she is, so she is. You say you're a feminist, are you saying I shouldn't believe you then?

TunipTheVegemal · 11/04/2012 22:46

I don't care whether you believe me or not.

Nyac · 11/04/2012 22:58

You still haven't answered what it is about Wendy McElroy that leads you to believe she's a feminist SF.

solidgoldbrass · 11/04/2012 23:10

Well an awful lot of feminists disagree with each other about some aspects of feminism. Not all feminists are separatists, for instance, but that doesn't mean non-separatist feminists are not feminists. Some feminists are Marxists, some are not. Some feminists focus on (for instance) abortion rights as the most important issue, others are more concerned with discrimination in the workplace, others want to concentrate the bulk of their energy and attention on empowering women in the developing world...
I'm of the opinion that being a feminist means believing that women are full human beings entitled to all the same rights as men, that they do not as yet have all these rights and that feminism is about fighting to get them.

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 23:10

Yes I did. She says she is a feminist, therefore she is a feminist, just to clarify.

I am a Martian. Does that work ?

Nyac · 11/04/2012 23:15

According to Sigmund it does. You don't need anything else.

I've been a giraffe for quite some time now, it's great.

AnyFucker · 11/04/2012 23:16

Sigmund, you are Erin Pizzey. I said so.

I have a bit of a problem with anyone who comes out with the 'I am a feminist but - ' type of stuff eg 'but men are naturally less monogamous than women' or 'women are far more caring than men that's why they don't want high salaries for working in nurseries and care homes, it's more of a vocation'.

That's partly because I think people who believe that sort of thing are thick whether they call themselves feminists or not.

Nyac · 11/04/2012 23:21

Still not able to make an argument then SF.

Poor you.

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 23:21

AF, have you abandoned your post?

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 23:23

I'm working on it Nyac. Perhaps you could teach me how to exert mind control.

AnyFucker · 11/04/2012 23:25

Sigmund, why do you keep trying to change the subject by baiting me ?

Nyac · 11/04/2012 23:26

I thought we were here to talk about feminism. Are you just wanting to be insulting?

Go on. Tell us why Wendy McElroy is a feminist. You can do it. Just try really really hard.

SigmundFraude · 11/04/2012 23:28

Baiting you? Do me a favour. Care to look at your last posts to me!

The subject of this thread, to get back to it, was Erin getting a kicking for truthfully pointing out that Dv is perpetrated by both genders. This apparently means she may not call herself a feminist, and I object to that.
