I feel her pain I have no mates because I am so darn gorgeous!! Wink

TunipTheVegemal · 03/04/2012 11:26

It's a classic DM setting women against each other piece.
It's full of her bitching about other women and we're meant to read it and bitch about her in turn.

Flightty · 03/04/2012 11:36

Oh dear. Tried sitting on my hands because it's DM and we all know they're just shit stirring as usual.

Don't take it seriously. It isn't worth it, it's like staring at a piece of dog poo for hours, wondering if its shape has any meaning.

rosy71 · 03/04/2012 11:53

What a strange article. I've never been a bridesmaid either (as an adult anyway). Obviously it's because I'm so beautiful!!!

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 03/04/2012 11:55

Dreadful dreadful article. Maybe it's not her beauty is the problem but her arrogance

minimathsmouse · 03/04/2012 12:11

Terrible vapid nonsense. I think "pretty" has very little to do with it, maybe it's more likely to do with whether a women gives off a certain vibe. Her vibe is likely to make other women distrustful, not her beauty.

I have some beautiful friends who I trust and other's who are less so but more likely to court male attention because of their vanity.

duchesse · 03/04/2012 12:26

As I said on the other thread, I do not understand this article at all- either the point of it or the intended message. She seems terribly, terribly shallow, poor woman, and maybe also slightly delusional.

LulaPalooza · 03/04/2012 12:29

Oh BLEUGH Samantha Brick is so irritating.

She has also written articles about how she used to be fat, how she lets her husband pick her clothes and tell her what make up to wear, and how he'll divorce her if she gets fat. Click on her name in the DM article at the top and check out her previous "work".

She seems to just get commissioned by the DM for her supposedly "provocative" articles and she clearly thinks she's an intelligent and skilled writer, when her articles just scream
"I HAVE ISSUES! I HAVE ISSUES! WWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!"

Mathsquerading · 03/04/2012 13:15

"Don't take it seriously. It isn't worth it, it's like staring at a piece of dog poo for hours, wondering if its shape has any meaning."

Thank you for making me LOL Flightty! I (Blush reading the DM website) read this this morning and don't know if I was more alarmed by the content, the fact someone has been paid to write it or that I read it myself!

TBH it's not a lot worse than a lot of the other "celebrity" tripe they churn out on a daily basis.

"Hello, I'm female......can you all judge me on my right to remain on the planet by amount of cellulite there is on my arse, how many times I eat a day, if my kid is trendy or whether this dress fits?"

Flightty · 03/04/2012 13:25

I suppose I ought to read the article, but I don't think I can summon the energy!

sunshineandbooks · 03/04/2012 13:47

Don't take it seriously. It isn't worth it, it's like staring at a piece of dog poo for hours, wondering if its shape has any meaning. This has got to be a contendor for quote of the week. Grin

CBA to read the article but IME women who say things like that usually can't get any friends because of their own issues, not because of their looks. I actually feel very sorry for them because when their looks fade (and thus their currency with the patriarchy) the world's a very lonely place to be and in the interim they miss out on so much that is wonderful about female friendship.

kickingking · 03/04/2012 13:56

Is it me or is she not actually that pretty?

Hoebag · 03/04/2012 13:57

Shes not ugly but slightly delusional tbh, shes average

Not bring me the Kim Kardashians of the world and it might have some credence.

Hoebag · 03/04/2012 13:57

LittleWhiteWolf · 03/04/2012 14:00

I've seen this article all over MN today (am definitely spending too much time on here today!)

Totally second what Turnip said; she bitches about other women and in turn we bitch about her. Women vs women and its not pretty.

LemonTurd · 03/04/2012 15:09

I'm glad there's a thread on this in Femininism.

She's trending on Twitter and people are ripping her to shreds and calling her ugly, as they are on MN.

What's the right way to respond from a feminist perspective?

I'd rather critique her writing and the substance or lack thereof of her articles.

It makes me sad to see women bashing another woman on the basis of looks.

Tiago · 03/04/2012 15:11

I tried to read the article. I got too bored to finish.

TunipTheVegemal · 03/04/2012 15:16

I think the interesting question is why the DM commissions her to write this stuff.
It certainly seems to pay them - she must be bringing in the website hits like nobody's business.

This is what they do - set people up to be hated. They don't just do it on women, there was a 'hate the rich' piece a few months ago about a posh couple who ran out of money and were having to sell off their country house and take their kids out of private school. It was full of little details that were in there to make you hate them more, like them deciding to home ed instead of sending them to the comprehensive (and there may have been a perfectly good reason for that like they wanted to finish the GCSE subjects they had started but you were meant to assume it was because they thought themselves too good to mix with the plebs).

GooseyLoosey · 03/04/2012 15:22

But she is not beautiful at all!

What I find irritates me about other women (or indeed men) are those who tell me how gorgeous they are. On that basis I can well see why her experience is that other women find her irritating.

GooseyLoosey · 03/04/2012 15:23

Not bashing her on the basis of looks, but she has set herself up to be judged on that basis. She has stood up and said "look at me, I am beautiful and irresistable". It is human nature to look and say "no you are not". I think is is puncturing her ego rather than attacking her as a woman.

tribpot · 03/04/2012 15:26

It reads like a spoof - perhaps an April Fool's printed late?

I assume next week George Clooney will write bemoaning how difficult it was for him to be taken seriously as an actor when he was young and beautiful, and how he's only been able to make more serious films since he's got older. In the words of Chandler from Friends "my wallet's too full of fifties and my diamond shoes are too tight!"

Assuming that there was some learning point from the article, I'm sure we all realise now that we should pity beautiful people and invite them to our weddings.

Btw, I've worked in Sweden. If anyone, man or woman, went around saying how terrible it was being blonde and tall .. well, there wouldn't be much else to talk about.

StarlightMcEggsie · 03/04/2012 15:40

I don't think she can be a feminist herself.

You're not allowed to say she's not pretty according to the article coz it means that you are jealous.

Tbh she's not that great and she gets uglier the further down the article you read.

But I'm not sure it is actually HER that makes me turn up my nose, but the context in which her article is even there, published.

It's like she's prostituted herself!

OP posts:
TheOriginalSteamingNit · 03/04/2012 15:43

Maybe the reason everyone blanks her is that she's an arrogant horror.

TwinkleTwinklyStars · 03/04/2012 15:51

She is average looking at best,

Her problem with other women has nothing to do with her looks, but her arrogance and feeling of self importance.

you think someone would have pointed that out to her at some point.

Nyac · 03/04/2012 15:52

Oh dear, don't post this in the Feminist section.

Tunip, you are talking sense. We are having our buttons pressed to attack this woman. She does sound slightly delusional mind you.
