Use of the term "hamburger" by sonographers to describe baby girl "bits"

ahhhhhpushit · 23/02/2012 12:31

I've heard this term reported by mothers so many terms that it must by the term sonographers aee taught at sonographer school.

Anybody else feel uncomfortable by it?

Imagine it being said about a baby's bits once she'd been born!

Is it just me?

OP posts:

Ah. And being murdered in a coquettishly 'look at my peachy arse!' pose, too. Was it supposed to make a point? Or just cause a stir?

LineRunner · 23/02/2012 21:55

The sonogram sites all say 'three white lines'.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 23/02/2012 21:56

I'm actually having a scan tomorrow, as it happens. Think I'll ask the sonographer what term they use just out of interest, like.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 21:57

but see here's the thing, beachcomber. i don't actually think that most people think of hamburgers as anything to do with women's genitalia. i think that toothbrushthief was onto something when she was speaking earlier.

LineRunner · 23/02/2012 21:57

No leading questions, mind, Inmacula.

SardineQueen · 23/02/2012 21:57

Ooh congrats inmaculada! 20 week jobbie?

I don't know what most people think.

I know what I think, and I answered the OP.

I suspect that lots of women are uncomfortable with being patronised and worse during their ante-natal care.

AliceHurled · 23/02/2012 22:01

I went for a scan the other day. Strangely they didn't refer the heartbeat I could see as the 'lighthouse beam' although with the flashing nature it looked quite like it. We survived on general adjectives rather than needing to provide some reference to a random object. Why on earth would this need to be any different? Weird.

I hope when they referred to kidney and heart beach they didn't use those medical terms and instead gave you some twee object to understand?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 23/02/2012 22:02

Hmm. I suspect it's an 'up yours' from Mr. Flynt about censorship. Quite unpleasant connotations if viewed that way

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 22:03

what's that got to do with this question, though, which refers to the easily-identifiable and understood shape that the female genitalia makes on a screen when reproduced via sonographic equipment? (not that i was patronised or mal-treated during pregnancy, i treat people well and get the same in return).

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 22:03

kidneys are kidney shaped. and the heartbeat is flashing. easy peasy.

AliceHurled · 23/02/2012 22:04

The reason why is in Dine's Pornland but I can't bring it to mind. Was a direct response to something that was said.

Yes it was flashing. But they didn't say 'you see that lighthouse beam', they said 'you see that flashing'. Rather like 'you see those 3 lines' rather than 'you see that hamburger'

DaenerysTargaryenButCallMeDany · 23/02/2012 22:06

agree with EVERYTHING aitch has said, some people really like to make something out of NOTHING!

The sonographer told me to look for something that looks like a hamburger. I'm gobsmacked that people would have a problem with that.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 22:07

WHICH three lines, alice? the whole THING is lines. it's a sonogram.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 22:08

and hamburgers aren't twee. Hmm that's crazy. if they said 'it looks like a fluttery fairy going to sleep on its side' i could see your point.

Beachcomber · 23/02/2012 22:11

ChickensHaveNoLips, the Hustler/woman in meat grinder image probably merits being put into historical context.

When Hustler first came out, it was in direct competition with Playboy and Penthouse. The editors of Hustler 'challenged' both the others to see who could push public boundaries in terms of graphic representations of women. They stated that they didn't care if they alienated the advertisers with the images they dared to publish in the magazine and that they were defending free speech.

The published images were things like the meat grinder one (it is probably the most notorious) and images of women as, DU DU DUUUH, the contents of burgers.

It plays on the idea as women as; pieces of meat/disposable/consumable/butchered/animal status, etc. (and dead which is quite nasty when you think about it)

They did this at the same time as beginning the trend of women being displayed with their legs spread open, general porn nastiness, etc.

Hustler began the upping of the ante which is so common in hardcore porn nowadays by publishing that image.

And BTW, there is NO PROBLEM with asking questions. There is no problem in not knowing these things. Genuine questions are good and welcomed.

AliceHurled · 23/02/2012 22:13

The three lines that they're pointing to perhaps.

The idea of needing to provide reference to an alternative object for me is twee. The choice of object is then Hmm

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 23/02/2012 22:15

but there is SO much about the NHS that is not about you, it's about catering to a mass audience. is that really all this is, just a reaction to some perception of being talked down to? the more i'm reading, the more i think it is, tbh.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 23/02/2012 22:16

Thanks Beachcomber. There is a disdain in that image that is hard to get to grips with. It seems...angry? Gah, I know what I mean. But it's a feeling/vibe that I often get when I see 'Zoo' or 'Nuts' in the supermarket. Odd

AyeRobot · 23/02/2012 22:16

This is going to get to 400odd posts and used in evidence against the FWR board, isn't it?

Shall I start a thread on the trans-woman who got a suspended sentence for fraud and her lawyer used "she can't go to a men's prison because she's had a breast augmentation" as mitigation against a prison sentence as distraction?

4madboys · 23/02/2012 22:16

as i said when i had a scan at 28wks with dd, the sonographer showed me the three lines and said yes its def a girl, there are her privates they are the bits that 'look a bit like a hamburger on the scan' it didnt occur to me to be offended by it and i have never heard of a vulva/vagina/labia referred to as a hamburger at any other time, but i knew it was a DESCRIPTION that sonographers sometimes used, they are not calling it a hamburger, simply saying that ON THE SCAN it RESEMBLES a hamburger.

actually when we had ds1 we had to have extra scans as he had some kidney problems, they pointed his kidneys out on the scans and i think they said they are the bit that looks like a 'bean' or something to describe them.

Beachcomber · 23/02/2012 22:18

but see here's the thing, beachcomber. i don't actually think that most people think of hamburgers as anything to do with women's genitalia.

Aitch I don't think people do either.

See above post on Hustler for why it might be an issue though.

It isn't fannys = hamburger. It is women = meat + women = fanny = hamburger + sex scan = crass.

Which is probably as clear as mud.
