Is it? I am not really up with dancing terms but if I were to go to the ballet I would refer to all the dancers as ballerinas. Dancers works well as gender-neutral but doesn't mention the type of dancing they do.

(does anyone remember the bit in Independence Day where Will Smith's girlfriend meets the First Lady?)

I said "postman" to my daughter today. It felt wrong but my brain wasn't quick enough to think of an alternative. It often sounds contrived trying to come up with a 'spontaneous', natural sounding alternative. One of our local 'Posties' (would that do, do you think, in an informal situation?) is a woman, so it was especially unjustified to say "Postman".

Blindcavesalamander · 24/09/2011 19:42

P.S. "Ballet Dancers".

Catitainahatita · 24/09/2011 19:51

On the "lady doctor" theme. It really get my goat that there is "football" and "women's football"; it's a small gripe but I hate maleness being the norm.

I live in Mexico, so in a Spanish speaking culture (which has gendered nouns). There is currently a drive in favour of making "feminine" versions of all jobs. "ingeniero" and "ingeniera" (engineer, the "a" signifies female; the "o" male). The problem, for feminists at least, is that in any plural situation in which the genders are mixed, it is grammatically correct to make a plural version of the masculine (ie. los ingenieros is the plural of two or more engineers even of there is only one man and 50 women being refered to). Only if you know for a fact all are female would you say "las ingenieras".

Saw this and thought of you all

Now off to play L.A Noire and shout at my on screen partner for being such a misogynist...

MrsKarbonara · 24/09/2011 22:12

I took DD (3) to NHS walk in recently and said 'say thankyou to the lady doctor darling'. Kicked myself and apologised to the doctor who shrugged it off ( I guess being a dr she has more to worry about tbh). Was so mad at myself! Oh and we had a female postie today. I like 'postie' ......

'Ladies' really bothers me. The equivalent is 'gentlemen's' which is only used now by frighteningly expensive tailors and lap dancing clubs.

Shall we all speak Finnish? And is that Suomi? (knowledge garnered from DVD menus)

Using: oh yes "ladies" worse still. And worse is the fact that calling a woman "lady" was drummed into me so much as a child I struggle for it not to be the default way of referring to women.

Finnish or whatever sounds cool.

AlysWorld · 24/09/2011 22:58

I can speak Finnish!

Uxi

There you go. It means 1. That is it Grin

I can order one or five beers, waters or cheeseburgers in Greek. And tell the waiter that they're a wanker...

How's that for talent? Grin

"Nero" for water. Not spelt that way, mind...

Wanker is "Malaka". My Mum only found out after I literally spat my drink out hearing a bar person call her boss a malaka after an argument in the middle of a shift... Mummy dearest didn't see the funny side... Grin

Ahem, are they other translations for "malaka"?

If so, does anyone know the greek for "misogynistic arsewipe?"
