The departure of dittany

I only know that she has left, and in her post she didn't say much as to why, though some people can speculate and imagine why.

Quite a few days ago (last weekend I think) there were threads that pinpointed the lack of consideration that MNHQ has toward the sort of trolls that infest the FS section from time to time - different in nature and purpose to your average troll that infects MN from time to time.

It may well be that d. is in contact with regular posters whom she trusts. I don't know.

What I do know is that d. was a fabulous source of invigoration and illumination to a lot of posters, myself included, though we didn't always agree with her.

I would like a review from MNHQ of their current "talk guidlines" policy, in order that the FS is provided with a consideration that recognises the particular vulnerability that it experiences.

D. left for her own reasons - but this presents itself as a sort of 'test case' for MN to respond sensitively.

Would anyone agree and post here in support of this?

sm, I've been told all those things in this section too. I also had a particularly nasty poster not bother to read my thread and tell me repeatedly I was a doormat. Oh .... wait, that was you! So, sorry, what was it exactly that you want other people to change about their posting styles before you change yours?

garlicbutty · 16/09/2011 14:29

Sunshine, as you know (I think), I'm one of many genuine and well-meaning feminists who have been called a troll, a man, "MRAtastic", a woman-hater, personality disordered, bigoted, anti-LPs and other stuff. All on FWR, plus the off-board threads about FWR.

I've experienced some nasty personal targetting on AIBU as well, but nothing like as persistently vindictive as that on FWR. And this is not about me - I've seen it happen even worse to others but I shan't speak for them, so give my own experience. It's really not all about trolls. It's quite largely about people who don't fit the mould being treated as enemies.

I just want people to grow up a bit.

scottishmummy · 16/09/2011 14:33

lrd im not asking for any change on mn
fem topics are asking for different or sensitive moderation. a special dispensation

doormat? where you the woman with backache 5yrs hunched over a laptop with caveman husband who wouldn't share? yes id say doormat to acquiescing that

LRDTheFeministDragon · 16/09/2011 14:35

For the 90th time, I'm not asking for different moderation.

scottishmummy · 16/09/2011 14:36

op is asking for talk guidelines review and its came up loads
so you individually maybe not
collective others yes are advocating its safe feminist space and need sensitive moderation.was post that mnhq undermine the topic

LRDTheFeministDragon · 16/09/2011 14:37

(and no, I was the woman who'd already decided to have it out with my DH and sort the issue when you came on the thread and told me that my insisting on having desk and comptuer was being a doormat and I needed to stop blaming him and sort my issues. It was obvious you hadn't read the thread.)

LRDTheFeministDragon · 16/09/2011 14:38

sm, the talk guidelines review has already been explained to you. HQ change guidelines quite often. it's not special pleading to ask. FFS, read the thread.

TheRhubarb · 16/09/2011 14:38

Moderation needs to be stricter. Perhaps there should be official moderators who can act quickly? Or have I missed the moderator recruitment and they just aren't doing their jobs well enough?

There are enough posters who volunteer for the MN Police so I'm sure a moderator scheme would have plenty of willing posters.

Re, IP addresses, i think the situation is that if MNHQ thinks a crime has been committed, it can ask the police to get involved and the police can make a RIPA request to the ISP to get the poster's details. generally speaking a proxy server won't save you at this point because the ISP will link proxy details to RL details. But getting a RIPA request ain't easy.

Otherwise, agree with Calatalie ('How!'), sm, garlic et al. But think MNHQ should open it up to the board and see what the pervailing view is.

Pan · 16/09/2011 14:57

Well, 400-odd posts in surely MNHQ could muster a comment?? I did mail HQ last night to ensure it crosses their radar.

Did anyone suggest a wireless keyboard & mouse, SAF? 'Tis what I do. Laptop on kitchen table, keyboard on lap.

So - err, it's a tabletop and lapboard. Or summat :)

Spero · 16/09/2011 15:44

Think rhubarb, garlic butter and scottishmummy talk sense.

I would be interested to see if number of active trolls now falls because Dittany has gone.

Pan · 16/09/2011 15:50

Rhubarb - in answer to your question, yes I ahve asked for an MNHQ response twice now and had emailed them last night as well. I notice the thread is now in the little advertising kiosk on the RHS of the homepage, so I'll stop waving to HQ now.

OP posts:
giyadas · 16/09/2011 15:51

I don't think it will, they'll just target other people instead, encouraged by past success. It the fs that attracted them, not Dittany personally.

SybilBeddows · 16/09/2011 15:51

It didn't fall when she went before.

Pan · 16/09/2011 15:54

Spero - it deosn't really matter in a way about whether the no. of trolls fall, does it? I, and a few others can see how some posters are showing troll-like behaviours but staying on the right side of the troll definition. And also being successful in the similar goal as trolls.

I fear the 'give them enough rope' position isn't really working.

sunshine - can i just say i found your last para extremely patronising. some of the people you disagree with (and i use 'you' merely because you used the term 'we' to denote regular fwr posters - although i prefer to think of individuals) ARE feminists. you may disagree with the views they are expressing, but please don't fall into the trap of expressing the one holy grail feminism thing. it's okay for feminists to disagree with each other. please don't make it an 'us v them' thing, when 'they' are fems too.

it's not particularly relevant, as you say, that's not the sort of derailing/ trolling that's being discussed - but that's the sort of attitude that makes some feminists NOT want to post on fwr.

garlicbutty · 16/09/2011 16:20

SAF - yes, at least I assume it's bluetooth as it doesn't need to 'see' the keyboard. Mine was only £20 but I'm on Windoze. I found a KeySonic 540RF Wireless Keyboard With Touch Pad for Mac at £40 and the Apple Wireless Keyboard for £64 (trackpad extra.)

V. handy for typing while curled up on sofa, too, ime.
