Hello,

I just reported a thread started by 'Dittony' which had a title attacking another poster and provided a link to a blog post.

It looked like a few others had reported it too as they had posted on it.

However in A/C there is another thread with the same title, which when you click on it takes you to a page saying 'error: thread deleted at OP's request'.

The OP however would appear to be someone who posted on the first thread, but not the same person who started it.

So can anyone please clarify what happened here...assuming the second thread was not posted by the same person as the first, (which has now gone) under a namechange?

(really hope not!)

dittany, I wanted to say this last time you left.

You and I have clashed on a few occassions. On other occassions I've agreed wholeheartedly with what you say. BUT when you left, to me, that sent out the wrong message in a way. To me, one of the strongest and most influential voices was silenced, and I didn't like that. It was because of something you said that I checked out this section of Mumsnet, and during that time, this section has helped me come to terms with a lot. When you left last time, I couldn't help but think "if they can silence one of the strongest views on here, then what help do the rest of us have?"

MNHQ, please take note. We shouldn't have individuals here who are put off from posting because we're being targeted. So far, I've only been "mentioned" on that website once, and I felt violated by that. For the trolls to be able to come in here so easily, and abuse our POV's, make rape jokes, tell us to "focus our attentions elsewhere", etc... That's an even greater violation, as it often seems to take so long for MN to respond. We're stuck in a limbo where we're told to ignore the trolls, but if we turn our backs for a couple of hours, they'd willingly post post after post of misogyny, rape apology, MRA targets and victim blaming. Now, I'm all up for sensible discussion, but not the potentially damaging posts we've seen recently. I'm also not up for being told that our views are those of "drippy feminists", or that we're all men hating, fire breathing evil beings. We're not. :(

I'd like to second DCMFD's post. I would also like to point out that this is the second time Dittany has been targeted on these boards in the last few months. This is not even remotely acceptable even a self moderated site such as this.

As far as I can see it, MN and the feminist section in particular annoys certain people to a such a great extent that they are prepared to spend days, if not weeks hanging about being offensive about feminism and women in general, and certain feminists in particular. This outrage even seems to lead them to dedicate sites to continuing this labour outside MN. I am aware that MN's options are limited in dealing with this. However, it would be more reassuring if MN would agree to review its guidlines in the light of this situation.

Beachcomber · 15/09/2011 08:17

I'd like to third that. Well said DontCallMe.

A feminist board that has to spend half its time defending feminist values (and posters) against rape apology/rape jokes/misogynistic insults and posts about Doing Feminism Wrong is a fucking joke.

This board used to be interesting and valuable - it still is to some degree, but if this goes on then it won't be for much longer.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/09/2011 08:21

^ What they said.

AliceWyrld · 15/09/2011 08:31

I agree with what the recent posters have been saying. People are being personally attacked and targeted. And this has been reported repeatedly. For anyone who didn't see this at the time, the stated intention of the trolls was to come and drive Dittany off here. It wasn't just go and wind up some feminists for fun. This is individual targeting. And the latest post was doing the same to Sakura and stalking her across the internet. So letting them come here and do this, with some idea of hearing different voices, doesn't wash it. These aren't different voices, these are people personally targeting individuals.

edd1337 · 15/09/2011 08:34

Who are these trolls?

Gosh i don't know edd

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 09:13

Can we also have like buttons added to posts? Grin

edd1337 · 15/09/2011 09:14

You don't know SinicalSal? Trolls get mentioned byt never by name. I bet these trolls don't exist

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/09/2011 09:14

Why would it solve it, Bob? People would just join to get round it.

And why the fuck should the feminist boards be forced to go private? Surely if that happens then the trolls/derailers have won?

All this stalking people round MN, other sites must qualify as harrassment, and that is a illegal, is it not?

I think that this is not being taken seriously enough by MNHQ in your desire to be fair, open and liberal.

Other posters have the right to post views that I disagree with. They categorically do not have the right to hound people around the internet.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 09:17

We're not allowed to call out trolls, edd... Hmm

And I agree with what BIWI said. Why should we have to hide? Isn't that another way for men to silence women?

edd1337 · 15/09/2011 09:17

That goes both ways. Others on this board should not be hounded off by being subject to insults

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/09/2011 09:20

Stalking people across the internet is creepy and weird and instantly makes the stalker's arguments, whatever they are, invalid

Blackduck · 15/09/2011 09:21

of course trolls don't exist on this board...we are a bunch of deluded women imagining it Hmm

SinicalSal · 15/09/2011 09:23

christ this is BORING. Having to defend ourselves again.

Edd, I like to stick to the rules, so I won't be troll hunting. But trolls on the feminist boards are generally antifeminists with one big drum that they don't tire of beating. HTH you spot them

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 09:26

le sigh

When we know they're trolling us, deliberately accusing us of "mizzandriez!" and asking "what about teh menz", or that because we want every rapist jailed, we must want all men jailed... then I think they lose the right to stay here insult free.

All they're doing is trying to discredit the feminist voice. And for every feminist that leaves the board because of them, they chalk it up as a win.

For the little, naive trolls who may be reading this thinking "get rid of a mumsnet feminist = a win for teh menz"... No. I nearly got driven from this board not too long ago. But I still would have battled as hard as I do now. Feminism is a frame of mind, the fight for women to be seen as equals... Not how often we post on Mumsnet. I campaigned for women's rights before I joined MN. I'll carry on should I ever leave. I suspect the same goes for every feminist here.

SinicalSal · 15/09/2011 09:28

and they're generally just the teensiest bit thick

Well whoever these trolls are, I sure hope they go away quickly

I like sticking to rules too. That's why we can have civil conversations

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 09:32

Bob, hiding it also makes the section invisible to outsiders with a genuine interest. How can you find something if you don't know it's there?

LRDTheFeministDragon · 15/09/2011 09:33

What DCMFD said.

Dittany, please know we're all here rolling our eyes at the stupidity of trolls.

I hope Sakura is ok too, if she's reading.

TheRealMBJ · 15/09/2011 09:33

Just the teeniest, tiniest, littlest bit

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 15/09/2011 09:33

They never do, edd. They linger like a bad smell until MN boots them. Sometimes, they last longer than others, for whatever reason
