I think she did, Sybil! I was there when she was in her last year and she was known as something special before UT.

Narky - Merton, with the poncey name (can't remember now ... there may be othrs with poncey names). He did my wedding photos. Smile

This has nothing to so with men feeling threatened because an intelligent woman is threataning their status

This is about social attitudes and men seeing women as objects. Something that should change ideally but not in this lifetime

WoTmania · 07/09/2011 20:26

I think what annoys me most is the way so much is made of their appearance, whether positive or negative. I suppose it's a way of putting them back in their place as objects.
It reminds me of an article I read ages ago about sports people and how the commentators contrate ont he memn and how many records they've broken and what they SB, PB and TBs all are but the women they also comment on 'lovely lass, sweet nature, porbably be starting a family' type stuff too.

Wrong. Females are suprpassing males in GCSE and A-level grades. Men are doing nothing to stop that

Yes there is a number of men that do, but not all men do

Thankyou

dittany - true. Apparently, the last men's college at Cambridge to go mixed, went in 1987 ... and they carried coffins through the halls and wore black armbands. Hmm

The ratio of male to female professors is still awful.

edd1337 · 07/09/2011 21:27

You addressed mine did you not? If you'd have not wanted a response you'd have ignored me would you not?

I have already said that if you do not like me posting, ignore it

Yes - there's that absurd Bullingdon Club picture of Cameron and his mates, isn't there? Men who've been trained up to think it is only right and proper women should be excluded from their special men-only societies.

(Sorry, I am aware you must be wondering why I bother posting here ... I know.)

I agree, SGM. Results at school don't seem to be matched by degree results. It seems almost as if we're training girls up to do well right up to where, for this generation, they're told it matters most. Then they must step to one side and let the boys win.

It's not surprising, but it is something we can hope to change. I am looking forward, for example, to seeing that guy who's sueing LSE get handed his arse. Grin

The thread about women being expected to do themselves down (I forget the title) is a huge part of why girls who've been successful in school become women who struggle more at university.

TheSmallClanger · 07/09/2011 22:12

I wrote what I thought was a really good contribution to this, but MN died on me.

I think there's a lot in the idea of men being threatened by women with status, whether that be intelligence, or something like being upper-class. A certain kind of man will always react with degrading, sexual comments with a subtext of domination. I can't think of a specific example at the moment, but the kind of thing I mean is when someone like Zara Philips (class) or Gail Trimble (intellect) is written about, all the knucklescrapers jump in with their inane, disgusting comments, usually referencing something like "I'd ride her" or "forcibly shoving their cock in her mouth".

They do it to feminists too - the classic "all feminists just need a good deep-dicking".

That's the way they some accross smallclanger. Some men see the anger and hate in their eyes and think they need to lighten up. They also assume they are ALL lesbians and thus don't get a good dickin

Sometimes it's the way men think, I witness it all the time with comments about what they'd do to a woman, it's male instinct to procreate

It will never change
