Karen Brady

This came up in the Daily Sport thread. This dirty little publication is now published by David Sullivan - who seems a particularly nasty piece of work to me (read about his exploitation of Mary Millington on Wiki for example).

I have seen Karen Brady held up as a positive role model for business women and there is quite a bit of stuff online about her feminist principles.

For the life of me, however, I can't see how she squares this with a career that owes everything to David Sullivan's patronage!

Positive role model then?

Ugh! That Wikipedia page about Sullivan is vile. I have a lot of time for Karren Brady (despite her repeated insistence that she is not a feminist, which I find sad) and can't imagine how she can be involved with someone like him either! Maybe she just sees it as a means to an end - without his patronage, she wouldn't be in the position she's in now, making womens' lives better?

jennyvstheworld · 16/08/2011 19:27

Has she insisted she isn't a feminist? I've missd that Josie, thank you. I wonder if that's how she justifies peddling degrading images of women?

I have, however, seen some film where she states that she tries to only recruit women... A feminist principle that HerBex would be extremely proud of!

PS Was it you Herbex stating that Amnesty International should only have excluded men from their recruitment process? I think it was.

BonnieLassie · 16/08/2011 21:26

Can a woman be succesful but not be a feminist?

jennyvstheworld · 16/08/2011 22:30

Undoubtedly. I was wondering whether a successful women like Karen Brady could be a role model for feminists though?

OP posts:
DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 22:34

Has this been launched as an attack against HerBeX? Isn't it time you put your issues with her to one side?

jennyvstheworld · 16/08/2011 22:45

Err... I was highlighting the fact the Brady recruitment model was along the lines of that mentioned by HerBex in the AITV post - thus demonstrating that it was a feminist stance. I'm sure that HerBex is extremely proud to say that she is a feminist so I'm not sure how your thought process works.

Gosh, you do think I'm petty don't you? More grist to my mill that anyone who is a bit anti is thoroughly labelled, I'm afraid Wink

OP posts:
jennyvstheworld · 16/08/2011 22:45

Any views on Brady Frothy?

OP posts:
giyadas · 16/08/2011 22:49

Isn't there already a thread where you could discuss HerBex's opinion on AI's recruitment policy?
I think there is.
Hmm

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 22:55

Yes, I do think you're petty. You more than proved that with yesterdays thread.

BonnieLassie · 16/08/2011 23:05

I don't see why feminists could not have role models that aren't feminists.

jennyvstheworld · 16/08/2011 23:09

Oh for crying out loud giyadas - it's not me who's banging on about it is it? I want to know what your opinions are on Karen Brady! I already explained why I brought it up.

Frothy - that's still just your opinion isn't it? I know many people like to think their opinions are facts and I won't apologise for expecting more from a bunch of people who are expressing an interest in an area of intellectual debate (feminism). You call me petty and I say, in so doing, you are stereotyping and labelling. However, I'm not going to sit here and trade insults with you all night. If you have nothing to say about the question I have asked in this thread then kindly bugger off.

Alright, whatever. I told Frothy to bugger off actually, but don't let that worry you. Stay up there on your high horse and do whatever you want. I'm not playing.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 23:18

Beat me to it, giyadas.

At the end of the day, your attitude in your 2nd and 3rd post was such that you were calling out HerBex with the look to start a disagreement. Was there such need for that? No.

I will answer the questions on Brady as and when I'm ready. I do feel your attitude is unacceptable and confrontational, though. Again. That's not a conclusion I've drawn just from this thread.

Just thinking about this some more...

It's interesting how the people complaining about my attitude only ever reply to my 'off-approved-feminist-message' posts and never to those where we seem in broad agreement. Such replies as I do get are often considerably more personal and aggressive than anything I post Hmm

Portofino · 17/08/2011 13:24

Personally I have the impression that you come here with the desire to wind people up rather than to engage in normal debate. That MIGHT have something to do with it....

jennyvaultsthewagons · 17/08/2011 13:47

I do take the point (made elsewhere) that, with a great many proper trollers here, there is a natural suspicion. As I said, though, I do engage in normal debate and no one seems interested in those posts. I think people rather enjoy a pariah...

Any comments on Karen Brady, Portofino, or are you only interested in criticising my 'agenda' and style too?
