A friend has labelled me a conservative feminist?

This was following a conversation about this article aboout which I said I thought any mother encouraging her child to join (when she's older) the glamour modelling industry was irresponsible.

Apparently, the fact I'm anti-porn and against encouraging glamour modelling means I'm an "Ultra conservative feminist"... Oh, and anti-sex. (That's the opposite of sex positive feminism, isn't it?)

Any thoughts on this? I'm a bit and assuming the young man who made the comments isn't as clued up on feminism as he claims

Sounds like someone can't handle anything he can't label, file away in a box and therefore dismiss... There are so many grey areas and sticking points around these subjects and I hate the sex-positive/anti-sex options when most people have ambivalent feelings and responses. You can be positive about sex and still not want women to be trafficked, kids to be dolled up etc...

Your friend hasn't really thought about it very hard. I would happily take them around an anorexia ward and then we can talk about the 'harmless' glamour model industry.

Well, so what, in a sense. 'Conservative' is another devalued word, in some circles, much like feminism is. (Not that I'm a conservative, dear me no!) There's probably loads of sensible, logical ideas under the conservative umbrella -no expert, meself - but there's nothing wrong with taking the best from many perspectives.

The whole problem with "sex-positive feminism" (and apologies to anyone who identifies as such) is that it gives the impression those feminists who don't identify as such are anti-sex.

I also got asked why I was studying media, if I felt the industry was so damaging to women.

Oooh, and he started the abortion debate shortly after I started this thread... Apparenty, because I believe women have the right to choose an abortion if they feel that's what they want/need, and they don't need to be told "oh, but you're ending a human life, and the preferred thing is adoption" once they've made that decision... I'm "anti-life"... Suprisingly, he identifies as a pro-choicer. Not suprisingly, he uses a lot of pro-life arguments.

He was definitely using it in an attempt to devalue, SinicalSal. He's a "socialist" (he claims, but regularly spouts more right wing views) so calling someone conservative is an insult in his books. Was wondering if anyone could shed more light on "Conservative Feminism"?

I'm not up on all the feminist jargon, but I have to say I think 'sex-positive feminism' is possibly one of the most ridiculous, jargon-tastic labels I have ever heard. What has feminism got to do with liking or not liking sex?

I'm seriously reconsidering my friendship with him. It's not too long ago he told me that feminists should be focusing on the important issues of pay and equal opportunities, not the "non-issues of Porn"...

TB, I'm not too clued up on sex-positive feminism, but I'm of the impression it argues that pornography and the likes can be enjoyed in a healthy manner. Again, if someone can explain sex-positive feminism, please do. The only feminist reference I found to it so far seemed pretty critical.

Is it just me or does anyone else think 'Mansplaining' seems to be sexist terminology used to explain sexist attitudes? I fail to see how fighting sexism with sexism is an intelligent way to fight a divisive society.

I agree with you, do think maybe another word to describe it would be better. It's not just men who "mansplain"

'Superscillious' is, I suspect, exactly the same and already exists. 'Up their own arse' a bit more down to earth....

Aha, but if there's one thing a man who is guity of "mansplaining" will do, when faced with being accused of such, is to turn the term round as misandry, or us women being "man hating feminists".
