Separatist Feminism

Ok, I really am really very late for work at this point but I thought it might be nice to have a space in which we can discuss separatist feminism. I've read a lot of advocates of it, and even incorporate some elements of it into my own life - I prefer not to live with men, for example - but I don't practise it totally and I can't find any examples of any separatist communes.

Does anyone know anything more about it? Does anyone live in a separatist way?

Surprisingly good Wiki link here

What is biology, Crapola?

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 20:37

It's just biology. I would say the same about a man using a surrogate and paying her off, like Elton John or Michael Jackson

annonforthis · 17/07/2011 20:37

this is very true Lenin!

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 20:38

Oh I don't know.....Erm.....parents.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 17/07/2011 20:39

Parents are biology? Confused

Are you serious?

Mouseface · 17/07/2011 20:39

"Sini...... Phew"

Sorry Crapola but I've read this thread finally and feel that your comment I quoted above (Sal's post) is not how your posts have been coming across. Nowhere near as simple as Sal's last post.

You know what CDV, all I see is a pretty interesting thread being derailed by a linear insistence that the only viable l, good parenting is the involvement of two bio parents which true, does work for many, and the near complete dismissal of all other parenting models.....despite the fact that they also work well for many other people.

So why don't you call out the actual advantages to two bio parents....is it so Dad is involved in care....because I know loads of couples, where Dad does very little......or are we saying that Dad earns the money....in that case are we actually perpetuating the model that mothers should provide free domestic service (as perceived in current society).

What to you are the things that make two bio parents the only way to have children.

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 20:53

I'm not going to harp on about the gay parents who do encourage contact with other parent and I appreciate the link Lenin, I will read it.

I feel like Dorothy discovering the cowering Wizard right now, pretty well deluded that feminism represents a positive movement for women.....not one wishing to disengage with men.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 17/07/2011 20:59

Crapola, how can you reconcile your views on parenting with your insistence that we shouldn't define men by their genitals (not that I agree anyone was)?

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 21:00

Disillusioned.....although deluded may well be a nod to Freud.

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 21:04

Because they are the actual parents.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 17/07/2011 21:05

Because who are actual parents? If that's a reply to me, sorry, I'm not following.

Riveninside · 17/07/2011 21:06

Hats this got to do with seperatist living?

Mouseface · 17/07/2011 21:06
Confused
Mouseface · 17/07/2011 21:07

Riv - that was to Crap

snowmama · 17/07/2011 21:08

...and if it is a reply to me, would you mind explaining what benefits that brings over and above all other parenting models...if it that obvious it should be super easy.

SinicalSal · 17/07/2011 21:09

Why wouldn't you think that feminism isn't positive for women?
Because of one thought-experiment non-prescriptive thread? Confused Or because you were challenged on some fairly judgey remarks about how other peoples' parenting setups were inferior?

MrMan · 17/07/2011 21:10

Truck this morning you said you didn't see anything offensive about this thread. Chances are you've moved on by now, but in case not lets look at some of the evidence. Here are some direct quotes from posters here:

women's liberation can't happen with the participation of men, just that it will take a LOT longer: Molasses
men's presence has not added anything to my life
I do not want any male friends
We could use men for reproduction purposes only: keep them in battery farms or something
[A male environment requires] wall-to-wall sky sports, minimum housework and questionable hygiene as standard
[men have] self importance/hatred towards others
ultimately, women are safer without men^
[men don't share] real emotional closeness
[men don't have] emotionally honest and intimate friendships with each other
In my personal and social life i only want females [multiple posters]
I dont want to mix with men

And yet we still have examples like VictorGollancz saying "honest, its not like we have anything against you men"... riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Look, if you want to be offensively stereotyping of an entire gender, fine. If you want to spend hundreds of posts about how you don't want them in your life, in your work, or getting your money: fine. But then you have absolutely no leg to stand on when it comes to complaining about equivalent behaviour from others, e.g. men. In other words: you have defeated your moral capacity to complain about men taking a denigrating view of women.

Irony really is a pain sometimes, isn't it?

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 21:13

So we accept that some people need to know the answers to.the universe, ie God, but a child hasn't an automatic right to know their parents.

Ss parent set ups are fine as long as the intention and part of thevthinking behind having a baby includes the rights to know both parents.....

CrapolaDeVille · 17/07/2011 21:15

I can't be arsed.

SinicalSal · 17/07/2011 21:15

too many double negatives in my last post etc...

My remark was that a child should know both bio parents if at all possible. It does seem to crop up as a 'finding oneself' issue during the teen years if both parents aren't available. I'm happy to accept that as a kind of instinctive thing that should be respected. Though haven't thought about it much and am happy for new information.
However it's not always possible is it, for a variety of reasons. And people turn out happy and ok. I guess I'm in favour of fewer obstacles to clear.
