To all those who say on threads 'I am too scared to go into feminism' - this topic isn't scary!

I think it's a shame when I see threads where the OP says 'I am too scared to put this in feminism' or something.

I am certainly not knowledgeable about feminist theory, but have never felt that my opinion on this thread wasn't wanted or I was vilified for stating what I believed.

I think this topic is pretty inclusive - yes some people are forthright with their opinions, but nobody's word is god, and I would hate to think that mumsnetters were put off contributing to threads in this topic because they mistakenly think the posters on here are viragos. Grin

OP posts:

Em, i mean all the penis talk, obv, xposted with lots.

floyjoy · 12/07/2011 21:59

Humour - there's plenty of threads that aren't about rape, assault, etc. All the music, film, tv threads for instance. Wasn't there a thread about comedy recently?

If anyone doesn't think something's been talked about they can start a thread. It's all open to anyone.

MRAs - I think Lenin made a point about non-engagement with them (apologies if it wasn't you). I think arguing with them just gives them attention which is what they want. I know that there might be people reading their comments and taking them seriously (not seeing them as malicious) and that maybe means that their points should be rebutted but it seems like a waste of energy. I don't know how best they should be dealt with.

So, do I count as a feminist, or just an irritant SAF?
I'm not exactly in wiv da in crowd, and gn and I have found ourselves nodding sagely together in a corner on occasion. Yet I enjoy reading posts from so many on this board.
It's a bit complicated I suppose.

garlicnutter · 12/07/2011 22:05

I'm interested in that too! I'm going to have to find something that works, or I'll become a dried-up hetero old prune Wink

Ahh, chin stroking, Sal! You'll never know the true joy of it, until you get a lively crop of post-menopausal sprouts.
Now, where's me tweezers? Blush

'feminist or irritant' - there is no contradiction. Some feminists are irritating. Germaine Greer, for instance, on occasion.

garlicnutter · 12/07/2011 22:12

SAF, I've often and enthusiastically agreed with points made by this board's "sages" including you - and Dittany and Sakura

I've often re-stated the point that threads here have helped to clarify some issues for me.

It sometimes seems that you - in particular - read my posts (I won't speak for others) through a fixed lens, practically searching for criticism and/or disagreement. When I have noticed this, and requested further info in order to understand your aggression annoyance, you've gone on the offensive.

I still don't understand this tbh. But maybe a cease-fire between you & me would be the best for this section in general. What say you?

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 12/07/2011 22:14

Me, me!

Goblinchild · 12/07/2011 22:15

'not up for having words put in my mouth goblinchild.'

Not putting anything in your mouth SAF, just asking a question.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 12/07/2011 22:16

GB, sorry to be blunt but it's late: if you want a cease-fire, I think you have to stop taking pot shots.

garlicnutter · 12/07/2011 22:22

FFS. Pot shots?! I am was trying to sort out a dispute, which matters to me, and which I still don't understand, by inviting a mutually respectful truce.

But maybe I should just take the advice so often offered here, and butt out.

Butted. And sad about it - but, if you're doing it too, LRD - I'm forced to recognise there's no hope.

I must be utterly shit at expressing myself. Though I've never noticed it anywhere else, except in a very few dysfunctional RL relationships. I mean, I get published and everything.
Oh, well.
:(

Thanks sparky. Grin

GB - what am I doing 'too'?

I'm, I will admit, getting fed up ... you're ignoring me or taking the piss out of me when I ask you to clarify and I think up to the last post I have been polite. I think a bit of irritation now is fair enough thanks!

SybilBeddows · 12/07/2011 22:25

Garlic, sorry but you really don't come across as someone trying to sort out a truce.
You seemed to me a page or so ago to be trying to keep an argument going when other people have stopped.

anyway, the most important thing is that the activism and consciousness-raising continue.

I'm sure people who rub each other up the wrong way will still happily work together on threads where we are all actually just trying to get something done and are all working towards the same goal.

In the end we are all feminists. We don't have to be able to enjoy each other's company to be on the same side.
