I need cheering up.

Today, it was hot so I decided to put one of those maxi dresses, they're nice and cool and floaty and what better to wear when it's sweltering outside. I went out to the shops and I was walking along minding my own business when I was approached, coming in the opposite way by a guy on his bike, he was talking on his phone but he stopped, slowed down, stared at me and said ''fucking hell'' in the most disgusted tone imaginable.

I just don't understand why he felt he had the god damn right to do that to me.

I wish I'd said something back but I was just kind of shocked, and him being on a bike he was gone in no time.

best thing to do is just to ignor it, and dont take it personaly, it may have had nothing to do with your dress and everything to do with him being an twit. the world has plenty of twits in it.

He was probably finding out by phone that the DNA test results on the child he had thought was his son were back from the lab, and decided to take it out on you.

I'm pretty sure. I thought maybe it was but the change in tone, from normal conversation voice to I've just found shit on my shoe voice - plus the way he looked at me.

He had the right because you are female and as a male he has the right to judge you on the basis of your appearance and then comment about it to you, in this case to show disapproval. In different moment he might have told a woman (quite possibly you) to 'smile', 'cheer up' or 'show us your tits'. By addressing a complete stranger in this way he feels powerful knowing that you won't have been prepared for it, that he is invading your personal space and that you will inevitably be impacted by it, even if only to think 'what a fucking arsehole'.

Underlying this is a fear of women, a need to assert control over them, a deep inadequacy and a desire for attention.

If it hadn't been a nice day you could maybe have stuck an umbrella in the bike's spokes and sent the arsehole flying, hopefully colliding with a bus.

You know I can still remember being a teenager, walking up to the front of the class, and one boy in the front row turned to his neighbour and asked (loudly) "Why IS Grumpla so... UGLY?"

I shrivelled and died inside.

I think about it now and realise that I was tall, intelligent, funny AND QUITE PRETTY THANK YOU VERY MUCH - he was a short squat bugger with a face like a slapped arse and an unfortunate tendency to those horrible massive chin spots, which everyone used to take the piss out of him over.

Some people just cannot get through the day without making somebody else feel like shit. It's usually because of their own pathetic inadequacies.

Practise shouting "FUCK OFF" really loudly. They never expect it and in this case he probably would have fallen off his bike even without an umbrella through the spokes.

He did it because you looked good in the maxi dress, and that upset him. He is so twisted and worthless and self-loathing that he is like a demon who wishes to spoil what is good and destroy what is attractive. He is a self-loathing coward who picked on you, as HerBex and others have stated, because he thought you would not retaliate. His bitter nature and justified self-loathing can only be alleviated temporarily by insulting others. But as he peddles away on his bike, it backfires on him as his conscience loathes him even more than before. You met a demon in the flesh and you turned the other cheek.

I have it on good authority that on his way home he lost control of his bike, which resulted in him crashing into a skip full of uprooted cacti, disused mousetraps and rusty nails. Clambering out of the skip he tripped and landed in a thornbush. Disturbing a bee hive.

He'll be confused, perplexed, dumbfounded, he won't understand it at all. As he cycles away it will play and play on his mind and he will try to make sense of what you said. Eventually it will come to him and he may even begin to slowly change.

Someone said something the other day about some men really hating beautiful women. And I remembered someone saying that to me years ago, about how some men will really have it in for you because they see you as being well out of their league and really resent it. So they snipe at you and bitch at you and sneer and criticise and if they don't know you, say random things to you in the street, but only if they're on a means of transport faster than yours so they don't have to justify or be challenged on their remarks.

I suspect this might be one of his problems.
