Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I've got quite a simple question that I just can't answer - why would a woman not be a feminist?

Surely everyone wants equality of opportunity, don't they?

Would appreciate the opinions of those feminists far wiser than I.

OP posts:

I'm fairly sure there is one, there was the woman who kept saying 'It just doesn't sit right with me' for a feminist to be a SAHM - ie no argument as to why it was wrong, just, 'it doesn't sit right with me', but given the HUNDREDS of posts arguing the opposite it would be frankly bizarre for anyone to come along and conclude this was even a common feminist belief.

MitchiestInge · 18/03/2011 22:18

there are good arguments either way - work, stay at home, blah blah

do you mean to insult women by suggesting they can't consider opposing views within feminism and make up their own minds as to which they find most compelling?

Woman does not equal feminist. You do understand that, right? And that you don't have to pass a feminism test to post on this forum?

And there are plenty of things that are not feminist, either because they is not a feminist angle to them or because they are anti-feminist. Some of those things feminsts still do Shock.

You are being selective in your reading, OMG. And starting to tede on.

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:28

The point is why would people not want to be a feminist and this is pretty much the reason because they hear about this kind of thing quicker than anything else.

For ex. this thread.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/1172443-Im-a-feminist-but

Why would the "but" even be there if people didn't some how think some of these things are anti-feminist?

Flamingo thinks she is a bad feminist because she likes make up, baking etc and is a sahp why? because there are some feminists that would have her believe that she is a bad feminist.

Omg20, you're being obtuse on purpose and it's a huge waste of your time and everyone else's. I can't work out why you would bother to play this game.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/03/2011 22:36

OMG20, the point of that thread is perfectly clear, I can't believe you've missed it!
the point is that people have stereotypical ideas about what feminists are like, this is feminists demonstrating who wrong the stereotypes are.
If someone has said 'I'm a terrible feminist, I make cupcakes!' and you think that is serious then I think you have managed to miss some rather blatant irony....

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 22:41

Were not saying he's humourless?

Better that than thick, I suppose.

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:41

Exactly stewie myths that are reinforced by some feminists. Which is why I think some women don't want to be feminist they don't know what it means rather what others experiences are of it. I also don't know why you would want to insult me for no reason but hey I can live with that. Lenin she posted it herself on a public forum I just pointed it out I said nothing offensive about the poster at all. So we are not allowed to quote other comments or posts on this forum? That is a new one because I see plenty of others doing it without being called out for it.

MitchiestInge · 18/03/2011 22:43

it's not insulting to point out that you are struggling omg, it's the humane thing to do

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:44

The point is I am not struggling I know exactly what I am saying so it is insulting to me.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/03/2011 22:44

I am a terrible feminist, I am laughing like a drain at Omg thinking Flamingo is serious about not being allowed to bake, instead of pursing my lips and shaking my head in proper humourless feminist vein.

It doesn't matter whether or not she was being ironic what matters is that the stereotypes are there and are reinforced by some feminists and that is what a lot of women hear about that is why they are stereotypes.

Did you get dropped on your head when you were a kid?

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:53

They are quite obviously views held by some feminists if you deny that then I suggest that you are the one that is being obtuse. As for posters defending themselves there was nothing to defend against. I would understand if I had insulted the poster I commented about but I didn't and no it isn't considered bad form considering a lot of people have posted about what other people have said in other threads.

MitchiestInge · 18/03/2011 22:55

not that it isn't very thoughtful and helpful of you to add your insights and ideas omg but what is your actual point? That feminists should - what?

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:55

I didn't say that the irony in that post/thread was reinforcing the stereotypes I said that there are feminists reinforcing the stereotypes that were in that thread.

Omg20 · 18/03/2011 22:57

There was a question asked I answered with what I think deters women from feminism.

My purpose is constructive debate just what exactly is yours when you are insulting me for no reason.

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 23:00

Where? You keep banging on about "some feminists". Who are they? Where are they? Is it the ones they talk about on M R A forums? They can never seem to name or quote any (non-fictional) ones either.
