Do you think Pink is a feminist?

I think she is. There's little things she does in her songs and some of the stuff she sings about indicate she is. Plus I quite like her so secretly hope she is Grin

I was going to say 'yes she is' but reading the arguments I think there's a very good point there - society sets women up to be dyed blonde, image obssessed, plastic, over made up and then laughs at/hates them for being so. Like the magazines which feature overweight/underweight slebs. Damned if you do damned if you don't. :(

One of the troubles with the world is the way everyone takes away credit from women, by assuming that anything creative that a woman does, must have been done by a man. So you might hear someone talk about the guy who wrote "Stupid Girls" when anyone could go to the Wikipedia entry for the song and see:

Pink has explained that she noticed many young girls near her Los Angeles home aspire to the hypersexual personae of female celebrities rather than for their careers or talents. She was inspired to write "Stupid Girls", in which she deplores the lack of good role models for girls while encouraging them to cultivate independence and individuality. "There's a certain thing the world is being fed, and my point is there should be a choice," Pink said.

But to be fair, the same entry list one male name and one ambiguous one as co-writers.

No. She is a poor woman's Peaches.

I agree with Dittany.

It's much more interesting when we recognize people's multiple motivations for what they do--real life doesn't often match dogma. So if Pink co-wrote "Stupid Girls" can we call her a feminist for the basic sentiment, or an anti-feminist for not making allowances for the pressure the "girls" are under? It's tricky.

But of course she deserves the credit, or the blame, for the song!

A few years ago I was watching a festival on tv, and they were filming Pink as she was about to go onstage. They were filming backstage and as her name was being announced she shouted 'Quick!' at an assistant who came running over, pinched Pink's nipples really hard, and then she ran on stage (Pink not the assistant).

It was bizarre. I suspect she has feminist aspirations, but her view is somewhat distorted as she herself is part of the media machine?

I liked that article someone linked to where Pink said about reading 'Female Chauvinist Pigs' and such. Makes me think redhappy's right about the aspirations, but not always getting it right.

The nipple-thing is a bit weird tho. Grin
