Do you think Pink is a feminist?

I think she is. There's little things she does in her songs and some of the stuff she sings about indicate she is. Plus I quite like her so secretly hope she is Grin

Pink comes across as a strong female role model and those lyrics endorse that view although that's just a personal opinion.
Most consumers that buy into the Pink style are young girls aren't they? I could be wrong though.

AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 14:59

Isn't Pink writing a song that attacks the women rather like people who object to lap dancing clubs targeting the campaigns towards the women that work there? I agree that it isn't feminist to do that. You challenge the system that makes the clubs exist, not the women who work there. So how is Pink criticising women for behaving in a way that patriarchy produces feminist?

AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 15:01

And if anyone was suggesting that women are right and correct because they are women why would they be critiquing Pink?

fangbanger · 25/02/2011 15:01

Because when your main audience is teenage girls, you aim your message to raise awareness and drip feed the way of thinking.

AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 15:04

Sure. So why is criticising other young women the way of thinking to be drip fed? There's a gazillion ways to get that message across.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 25/02/2011 15:04

"Dittany bel;ieves that all women should be seen as right and correct merely because they are female." Well clearly Dittany doesn't, as she doesn't think Pink is right and she is a woman!

I personally wouldn't have chosen to call women stupid as a method of getting across the mesasge to stand up to badly behaved men. There are much better and more positive ways such as portraying a woman who doesn't put up with shit from a man. There is no need to put down other women to get that message across.

TrillianAstra · 25/02/2011 15:04

"If X were a feminist she would/wouldn't do Y"

I don't believe this at all. I don't think anyone is qualified to make this judgement.

fangbanger · 25/02/2011 15:06

Alice - if you think you can write a hit record witha better message then go for it.
At the moment i can think of no other, similarly successful recording artist who targets this age range with such a positive female message

This is a thread to discuss whether people think pink is/is not a feminist. We will all disagree because we all have different opinions however it is not on to start 'dittany-bashing', she has a right to her views as much as the rest of us

OP posts:
AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 15:09

I don't think I can write a better hit record cos that isn't what I do. Does that mean Pink is beyond reproach? Cos she's better than others?

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 25/02/2011 15:11

fangbanger - why do you think someone who is portraying women in such a negative way (and calling women stupid is very negative) in that song is giving a positive female message?

fangbanger · 25/02/2011 15:14

It has already been stated that Pink consideres herself a Feminist.

There are no rules that feminists must adhere to.

for a bunch of women to decide she can't be simply because she has chosen to word a song in a way that they happen to disagree with is ridiculous.

found this (not read it)

fangbanger · 25/02/2011 15:21

I think you can identify yourself as feminist thinking without having the need to spend your time researching academic studies and articles on teh subject.

It is essentially a pop song. If it helps raise awareness of an issue and makes people talk then that ia a positive thing.

Dittany is very well read and incredibly informative on the subject and i very much admire that level of commitment. But i don't think it helps to be dismissive of people simply because they are not as well read or informed.

Why are a 'bunch of women' on a feminist forum not allowed to discuss whether or not something is feminist? Hmm

I have no idea whether Pink says she is or not. The only place I've read it, thus far, is on this thread. But why on earth can't we discuss it?

AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 15:23

It's got nothing to do with how well read or informed anyone is or isn't. You don't have to be well read to be a feminist.

thefinerthingsinlife · 25/02/2011 15:24

"Pink describes herself as a feminist - "I would say that, definitely""

from this article

Probably should have googled it before starting this thread
