Do you think Pink is a feminist?

I think she is. There's little things she does in her songs and some of the stuff she sings about indicate she is. Plus I quite like her so secretly hope she is Grin

It is deeply offensive to say someone who has self identified as feminist, is not.

it is not for you to decide.

It's got nothing to do with how well read or informed anyone is or isn't. You don't have to be well read to be a feminist.

Precisely.

Most people just haven't got the time or interest to study every single piece of literature on Feminism and the way to be one.

Having a rigid Veganesque manifesto that morally dictates to Women their behaviour throwing everything they do under the spotlight could be misogynistic in itself.

Pink is dealing the cards as she sees them and that should be commended even if her view doesn't exactly follow party politics.

"why does fangbanger keep commenting on me. I have no idea who this person is."

Are only your friends allowed to talk to you or reply to your points?

Threelittleducks · 25/02/2011 15:41

[ventures into unchartered territory]

Yes. I believe P!nk is a feminist.

Strong female message. Positive.
Very aware of her own sexuality and the way in which society manipulates such a thing. And explains why this is wrong. Deals with political issues.
Doesn't feel the need to validate things she does [pole dancing for her husband] to others as she is a strong independant female.

Feminism is always a journey and I believe it is extremely difficult to be black and white in such matters. There are always shades of grey. Just so happens she falls on the more feminist side of the spectrum [for me anyway].

Such stuff is always subjective and entirely dependant on point of view and can be argued as such until the cows/bulls come home.

This thread is weird

some posters are acting like dittany is the boss at the end of a videogqme who, if defeated, will win feminism for them

she is a person with a perspective that can be engaged with or not, much like anyone else

it is bizarre to treat her as though she owns feminism, is feminism, is ruining feminism or worse yet maybe, as though she herself thinks any of those things

I imagine it must be very wearing to be constantly set up as some sort of feminist windmill for all the would be quixotes to tilt against

No, the thread isn't about you. But whether you know fangbanger or not has no bearing to whether her talking to or about you is relevant to the thread.

"I have no idea who this person is."

So?

AliceWorld · 25/02/2011 15:48

SGM I did wonder Grin

Part of being a feminist is unpicking what we are used to thinking as normal and OK. We're all conditioned by our surroundings. No-one is born a fully aware feminist. I have done and said un-feminist things before, and I know they are now through learning and discussion. In that article, Pink doesn't say 'yes I am the most aware and knowledgeable feminist ever to walk the earth'. She says she is and that she's thinking some stuff through and that she's reading a pretty mainstream feminist book. So maybe she tried. And maybe she got it wrong. It doesn't make her beyond discussion and reproach, and how do we do any feminists or the movement favours by just saying 'yes dear, that's great' rather than discussing it?

thefinerthingsinlife · 25/02/2011 15:49

Bloody hell you lot stop bickering.

I think that she is a feminist who is having to play the game of working in an industry which uses women's sexuality to make a profit.

Imo she has started of making small steps to moving outside what is expected of a pop star.

I love the video with the women hooked up to a milking machine to feed a calf

"Is X a feminist?"

"No she can'' be a feminists, even if she thinks she is, because she once did one un-feminist (IMO) thing."

FFS.

CrazyHorse · 25/02/2011 16:05

"No. Not when she wrote a song called "Stupid Girls" about the women who act like sex objects in their videos and songs. Calling other women stupid is sexist, not feminist."

So any woman who has ever called another woman stupid is not a feminist?

BooyFuckingHoo · 25/02/2011 16:06

yes i absoloutely do think she is a feminist. i think she may be directing her frustration at the wrong people but i think her intention is good and it is feminist.
