Since it looks like the first chat thread is about to fill up, here's the next one all ready and waiting.

Think of it as the gated commune with babysitting on demand and gorgeous poolboys serving the drinks :o

that's a great story Stewie, I hope she makes it. If only so she can keep on killing the dandelions.

Just popping in for a whinge and a 'what do you all think?' moment. There is an ad on here at the moment for HSS Hire shops trying to get people women to harass other people their husbands into doing DIY. It's called the Great Big Nag. It's really pissing me off. nag.hss.com/ AIBU?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/04/2011 20:12

those books sound really interesting Engelbert. Who are they by? (I don't have a kindle but our local library is pretty good on YA stuff).

Perhaps this is a good point to ask for some suggestions for the thread on how to teach our sons about feminism. There are a few good ideas, but I'd like some thoughts from those with a more cohesive approach to what is needed.

And CdP? YANBU The advert relies on the most stereotypical of stereotypes on both sides.

Interesting guy talking about the connection between science and morality on Start the Week (Radio 4, on IPlayer). He makes a direct connection between women having to wear the burqa and their societal advancement (no shit sherlock I know but interesting viz. France). What really shocked me was the statistic that only 12% of Afghani women are literate and their average life expectancy is 44. In a country where Western forces are supposed to be making life better for everyone, I find that absolutely appalling. And yet, not that surprising :(

alexpolismum · 19/04/2011 07:56

Only 12%?? Sad that's awful. But then, you do hear about girls' schools being targetted and girls attacked on the way to school.

AyeRobot · 19/04/2011 09:26

E&M, I didn't realise that the programme was a repeat. It's great, isn't it? Ties in with what Christine has just said about Afghani women and education - Nel visits a school and learns that there are bombings deliberately targetted at girls' schools. Getting an education can be a huge, direct threat to girls, even when it is available. In addition to the physical threat, one of the problems (like with access to medical attention) is that there aren't enough women teachers.

Sad
AliceWorld · 19/04/2011 09:32

Is anyone here? Please just tell me it's all going to be OK Sad

AyeRobot · 19/04/2011 09:36

It's all going to be OK, Alice.

What's up?

EggyFucker · 19/04/2011 09:38

what's occurrin' AW ?

ChristinedePizan · 19/04/2011 09:42

I shall watch the programme later, would be interested to see it. I was so stunned by the 12% stat that I heard it yesterday morning and yesterday evening and then had to check on iplayer to make sure I had heard it correctly. There was a piece about training midwives in Afghanistan on Women's Hour last week which was absolutely shocking - they have a ridiculously high level of infant mortality largely because of ignorance and superstition so entirely preventable.

Alice - are you okay?

AliceWorld · 19/04/2011 09:45

ah, hello! Smile
Just dealing with some stuff I've buried for a long time later. Felt ready but now in flood of tears. Taken years to get to this point though.

AyeRobot · 19/04/2011 09:50

I'm so sorry that you're upset. Do you want to talk about it?

AliceWorld · 19/04/2011 09:57

Don't know. Thing is here has really helped as I've been able to write about it, and so admit it in such as easier way. Did then manage to tell one person in the flesh actually, forgotten about that till now. Sorry I know I'm being vague and cryptic. I'm just on a journey with it and today feels like a big day. Feminists made me realise that there are people who believe you and know it's wrong.
