Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I am so shocked about that thread stating most women have no pubic hair

I don't know quite why it has disturbed me so much. Like most women I have plucked/shaved and groomed for many years of my life. However the thought of putting myself through that really upsets me for some reason. Not that I plan to. It is just that I have never, ever considered that pubic hair is undesirable. I can't help but relate it to women in porn with little or no pubic hair and it makes me sad to think girls and young women (I have a daughter) will no doubt feel insecure about their vagina and how it looks in this way.

I am by no means a good feminist. As I mentioned I do shave my legs and I wear make up. I have read Beauty and Misogyny by Sheila Jeffreys and I question why I even do this. However it makes me almost weep to think of my daughter being influenced in such a way.

I was just really upset by that thread and I m not sure why

Who knows, Prole. This is a thread about a thread.

I'm allowed to express however I like.

Sheesh.

suzikettles · 06/01/2011 00:04

I haven't shaved anywhere for about 3 months now. It's really not that bad - I was quite surprised, and I'm a fairly hairy person.

I'm lucky in that dh isn't bothered about body hair (I don't think he loves it but he's not commented on my gradual werewoman transformation). I guess many men would be revolted - that's what we're told anyway.

I guess many women would be revolted too. Certainly would comment on it going by threads I've seen on here about seeing women in swimming pools & changing rooms with "spiders legs" and underarm hair. For this reason if I wasn't living in boots & trousers at the moment and haven't been swimming in months I'd get the razor out. For strangers, not the man I love or myself. Weird.

I wouldn't depilate my undercarriage for anyone though. Like many of you I suspect that isn't going to be an acceptable choice for young women in future. And you can be sure the reason will be about feeling fresh and clean, and they'll be doing it because they think it looks better, for themselves and it'll just be the way women are. Such is the world...

(I think the reason it's now mainstream is about porn although I realise this isn't the case for every individual's choice to remove their pubic hair)

If I vajazzled I can guarantee my H would wet himself laughing. Who thinks of that??

JessinAvalon · 06/01/2011 00:07

Well said, Prolesworth. No one has said that you shouldn't do it, Expat. You have your reasons, and that's fine. No need to roll eyes! I'm only trying to point out that it is a trend that many of us find concerning. So you choose to do it - great but that doesn't mean that it's something that is desirable for every girl and woman.

I first heard about this trend on the channel 4 sex ed programme last year. I was pretty shocked.

And yes, I would hope to bring up children to make their own choices but the pressures of their peer group are likely to be just as influential as their parents, sadly. So if their female friends are all 'choosing' to conform and their male friends expect them to be hairless, it's going to take a pretty tough girl/woman to resist.

expatinscotland · 06/01/2011 00:08

No way, Proles. :o

I have my own wax warmer.

Bliss Waxing Poetic all the way.

I did try the sugar stuff Humera, my mate, made me once, but you have to have a bit more regrowth than with the Bliss stuff.

Anyhow, I've destroyed a lot of my hair follicles over the years so I'm not so hairy.

I love smooth men, too.

JaneS · 06/01/2011 00:09

Sorry expat, my mistake. I assumed that because I was thinking of myself, I expect.

It's interesting that it happened at 10 - that's quite a common age to become conscious of 'adult' bodily changes and to dislike them, isn't it? Might it have been that, or am I off-base?

(Not trying to pry, I'm just quite curious as we seem to have had similar-but-different experiences at similar ages.)

JaneS · 06/01/2011 00:10

singing - mine too! Grin

Wouldn't anyone's normal reaction be 'Honey, I think you may have, er, accidentally got some of the kids' craft sequins stuck to your, um ... '

JessinAvalon · 06/01/2011 00:10

Oh god, Dittany....so not only do we have to shave the region but we have to decorate it with bloody crystals now?????

My weekends are going to be very busy!

expatinscotland · 06/01/2011 00:11

LittleRed, I had very hairy arms and legs long before 10 and didn't like it.

I just sort of one day decided to do something about it.

weedle · 06/01/2011 00:11

I know it's massively popular now, just wondered if it's viewed as the same as hollywoods etc?

Some points

*If JLH did start it after a break up it was a cheering up novelty thing, not for a man

*how many men would want to see jewels etc?

*I've not seen it in any porn but then I don't see alot of porn. Certainly see all the infamous ones tho lol

*Vajazzling parties etc are the new facepack and wine night for friends to socialise

I dont see myself as feminist so would be interested in oipinions

TheFallenMadonna · 06/01/2011 00:12

"She explains how after a break-up with a boyfriend, a friend of hers decorated her 'precious lady' with Swarovski crystals and it shined like a disco ball!"

OMG

On so many levels.

I started to get DH to read the other thread, but he went pale at Bonsoir's reference to nostril waxing...

How don't you see yourself as a feminist, Weedle?

KalokiMallow · 06/01/2011 00:13

For those of you who think shaving pubes is only done due to the influence of porn.
Do you honestly believe none of us could possibly be doing it because it makes sense to us?? None at all?

Do you know what really really winds me up, this bloody minded arrogance. Just because someone chooses something that you do not like, does not make them brainwashed into it by the porn industry. You are not the only person able to think for yourself!

If someone wants to come along and explain to me exactly where along the line my lack of genital hair had anything to do with porn, then fine, I'll concede that I was influenced. Except even on the exceptionally slim chance you could, that still wont prove the utterly stupid idea that all women remove their pubic hair because of it.

How anyone can claim to speak for a huge number of women - particularly whilst doing the equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears and saying "lalalalala" to what those women actually think - is a joke.

JessinAvalon · 06/01/2011 00:14

I can't watch the thread, Dittany, I just can't!! My blood pressure wouldn't take it!

I take the point that she did this after a break up but how many women are actually going to be doing this for themselves?

Don't tell them about that intimate piercing, Kaloki. I'm sure you had that done after watching some porn.

KalokiMallow · 06/01/2011 00:15

Who said it's obligatory? Some people like it, some don't. I don't remember anyone holding a gun to my head when I started, or even nowadays.

JessinAvalon · 06/01/2011 00:16

Kaloki - I and many others have said repeatedly that we understand if women and men choose to do this. Perhaps you need to read the whole thread, if you haven't already?

The difference is in choosing to do for your own personal reasons and feeling the need to do it in order to conform with a trend.

KalokiMallow · 06/01/2011 00:16

Of course expat, I'm known for skipping the fashion shows and checking out the latest porn for trends instead Grin
