Elephants had this idea!!

So I'll start

"we're not a homogeneous mass..."
"I don't like to be too narrow..."

OP posts:
LadyBlaBlah · 25/11/2010 22:46

Sprogger "I can pretty much guarantee that I am Not Exactly The Same as many people who regularly post in Feminism. Actually, I can point out people who regularly diagree with each other, yet still post here all the time."

That was the point about a non-homogenous group. But apparently that is antifeminist

And noone has said feminism is crap. Just that is deserves a debate

My question was to ScottishMummy. I'd be interested to know what she thinks on the UN's stance and their setting up of CEDAW.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 22:51

if you want a label yopu apply it.labels are for jumpers imo.dont drip dry etc

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:51

Sorry, SM, I don't understand what you're saying.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 22:51

read answer jess

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:52

Yes, that was a x post.

I didn't understand your post at 22:49.

LadyBlaBlah · 25/11/2010 22:54

Dittany, I don't see the two things as mutually exclusive

Of course, the desired outcome is to challenge and ultimately derail patriarchy, but surely the way in which this is done has to be debated. Debating it does not mean devaluing it, in fact, it should be the opposite, it should improve it.

I do think this board is too quick to shout antifeminist just because there is a challenge on a feminist status quo. I have said this many times before.

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:56

I haven't seen the word anti-feminist on this thread but I might have missed something.

All I have seen are people asking SM to clarify her points of view. Again, I might be wrong but that's how it reads so far.

LadyBlaBlah · 25/11/2010 22:57

You have missed somethng Jessin Wink

ScottishMummy - re: your post at 22:49. Are you saying that women aren't oppressed or they are? Sorry if I'm being dim but I'm not clear whether you believe this to be the case from your previous posts.

claig · 25/11/2010 23:01

This is what scottishmummy said

'isnt it ironic to call other women names like antifeminist and snigger about them and their pov.whilst bemoaning the misunderstood nature of feminism and name calling of feminists

so y'all dont mind bandying antifeminist about when is to another person, not self naturally

ok to name call then?'

I hadn't thought of this thread in those terms, but I can understand sm's point that there is a danger of creating an in-group and excluding other women as being anti-feminists if they disagree with some of the bingo items. Is this excluding women who could join and agree with feminism?

earwicga · 25/11/2010 23:02

'I do think this board is too quick to shout antifeminist just because there is a challenge on a feminist status quo. I have said this many times before.'

I agree.

Jess & SM

The UK coalition came to the same conclusion about UK women and girls in a report issued today - www.homeoffice.gov.uk/publications/crime/call-end-violence-women-girls/vawg-paper?view=Binary

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 23:04

Earwicga - that's the report I linked to above.

earwicga · 25/11/2010 23:05

Completely missed that comment Jess! Sorry.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 23:05

of course it is exclusionary to assume derailer/antifeminist.hence other people mn posts about why people dont post on feminist topic

earwicga · 25/11/2010 23:08

sm - I didn't mean to say you were 'antifeminist' by saying you were derailing (which you were). I don't use the term 'antifeminist' - I think it's pointless and it does get used as a default term if you disagree with someone.

The only point you have made SM is that the experiences of women in the UK and Somalia are different. Well, yes. Generally you will find that however bad things are for men in any society they are a notch lower for women. Maybe not you. There will always be exceptions when you are talking about a non-homogenous mass of 3 billion+ extant now, and the billions gone before. But overall the stance holds up.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 23:12

yes it does and it obstructs flow.as does derailer

frequent use of such terms, serves to propagate an orthodoxy with no room for anything else this creates a false bluster
