Elephants had this idea!!

So I'll start

"we're not a homogeneous mass..."
"I don't like to be too narrow..."

Breastfeeding bingo: 'formula is just as good'?
Polite tone 'well, studies have shown that is not so for this, this, and this reason'.
'Oh typical, that old breast is best trope. Formula is just as good'
Polite 'explain'
'Nah. Fomula is just as good. Tchah. You keep saying breastfeeding is great.'

Nothing changes except the polite tone on ocassion.

I am not new to feminism

claig · 25/11/2010 22:13

But I don't think that scottishmummy is an anti-feminist, she just differs on some viewpoints. On this thread I think she is making the point that some people are being classed as anti-feminists just because they disagree with all of the bingo points. I think she is saying that this is excluding other women on MN and possibly classing them as anti-feminists when they aren't.

Well you're interpreting her to mean that claig but she hasn't actually said that's what she means, has she?

HerBeatitude · 25/11/2010 22:22

Oh thank fuck for Dittany's clear sightd arguments.

That's exactly it. We are the ones challenging the status quo. That's what jarred about that post

I did say "feminist status quo", not "status quo"

The two are very different things.

The fact you think that challenging feminism is the defense of the status quo is quite revealing: feminism as it stands does not have all the answers.....there is much to be done, and this involves challenging feminism as it stands. Just because it is being challenged doesn't mean the outcome is changed. It just means that maybe the way to achieve the outcome changes.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 22:24

i contend that responding antifeminist/derailer to any divergent pov seeks to demonise and marginalise and conveniently ignore

feels v rigid and knee jerk response

im about to paraphrase so bear with me

ok i recently disputed the assertion that all women are oppressed

was told no no i was in denial the oppressed dont know they are oppressed

i struggle with the hypothesis of the few enlightened women who know the other women are oppressed but too daft,im all right jack,to do owt about it

this notion of an intelligentsia in feminism who know other women are oppressed and just need to get these women to rise up and hear the message is galling

would you wholeheartedly accept a man telling you that you are in denial/selfish

I think the fact that it's International End Violence Against Women day today says it all really.

The United Nations believes that women are oppressed, discriminated against, and abused the world over. Today is designated as EVAW day and in Bristol we've had a whole week of events.

If women weren't oppressed, then I would suggest that the UN wouldn't feel the need to hold this day still in recognition of that fact.

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 22:34

has anyone said feminism is crap,do link it

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:34

Home Office paper launched today to coincide with EVAW day:

Call to end violence against women and girls paper

"There were over 1 million female victims of
domestic abuse in England and Wales in the last
year1. Over 300,000 women are sexually assaulted and 60,000 women are raped each year. Overall in the UK, more than one in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, often with years of psychological abuse1. Worldwide violence against women and girls can be a problem of pandemic proportions."

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:39

ScottishMummy - do you see a link between the abuse directed at women and women being oppressed as a group the world over? I do. Would be interested to know your thoughts.

hmmm lets see

i want to give my baby best start and good role model by being working mum.

yes i agree

like thats going to happen

earwicga · 25/11/2010 22:41

'You came on the thread and criticized people on the thread!! How is that not baiting people to deal with you and not the topic? How can you deny that???'

And it worked too. Nobody could just it go and carry on with the thread. A shame as it was a good one.

as i said i struggle with the all women are oppressed but many dont know it hypothesis

esp the so called intelligentsia who can see the oppressed masses and jsut need them to listen up and rise up

this insidious notion of a clever few with enlightenment, and masses of women in denial is really distatesful

JessinAvalon · 25/11/2010 22:45

What do you think of the UN's verdict that women are oppressed and abused as a group and that violence is gendered?

claig · 25/11/2010 22:46

Is the UN part of the patriarchy? I think it probably is, as it is part of the global power structure set up by the powerful to push their interests. Are they on the side of feminists?
