Because the discussion on this at Ladyfest was fascinating but didn't go on long enough, I fancy continuing it here.
Soo, iirst off, why aren't there proper erotic magazines (with pictures of naked men in them) for heterosexual women?

Lenin: does the fact that a lot of people who make clothes work in slave conditions make you uncomfortable with buying clothes made by people who are paid a fair wage for their work?

LOL at how awful it is to not want to pay for your jollies.

My jollies are FREE. I don't NEED porn to get me off. I'm slightly uncomfortable with the idea that everyone needs porn and sex toys to help them come - three year olds can masturbate competently, it really isn't difficult. A while ago I participated in a discussion where one of the people expressed themselves utterly astonished that a single woman there didn't own a vibrator - "But how do you bring yourself off?" I imagine that person is also the sort who relies on use by dates for meat, rather than using her senses - talk about disempowered consumerism.

MillyR · 19/11/2010 18:18

HB, I assume lots of women own vibrators because they have long fingernails.

Can anyone explain the period drama thing too me? Why are period dramas particularly appealing?

snowflake69 · 19/11/2010 18:34

The thing is why do people hold porn as the only bad thing that is wrong? They make a big deal about people might be objectified/coerced etc but most people have clothes made in sweat shops and food of people in awful conditions.

Most things that we own are from people working in awful conditions who actually have no choice. There are plenty of people who willingly make porn/dirty stuff but some people like to feel morally superior and think they are above porn or any sexual aids as if it makes them somehow morally superior that they dont like looking at the opposite sex, watching sex or using sex toys.

snowflake69 · 19/11/2010 18:38

'So apart from the reasons Lenin mentioned, maybe the majority of women are just too stuck in real life, the real lifeness of being a woman...'

Nope it is as is evident on this thread and most threads of this type that most women think it is either wrong to like it or that it is somehow a problem with the woman if they like any types of visual or sexual aids to get off. Look at herbeautitudes posts for instance. Most people can and do masturbate with their fingers but what is the difference if they like reading erotica, watching period dramas, watching porn, looking at pics etc? It is whatever floats your boat if you like it then its up to you and it doesnt make you a better person if you dont use it. Its just peopel like different things.

Most people who own vibrators dont use them as essential for sex, many people dont even ever use them when they are having sex. Its no different to a bloke having a fleshlight etc. Why limit yourself to one thing? I dont understand why it is viewed that if you use vibes or porn you are going to actually need it to get off and it will become essential but if you like reading erotica, get turned on by a hollywood film or period dramas then thats fine and perfectly acceptable.

Surely it is, again like everything in life, ok in moderation?

HerBeatitude · 19/11/2010 18:47

Oh you are so missing the point Snowflake.

I don't have a problem with people having sex toys (I'm not unfamiliar with them myself Grin). I have a problem with people who can't imagine how it is possible to have an orgasm without them. Life must be so tough for them when they run out of batteries.

Actually snowflake the horror of the woman I mentioned who couldn't imagine that a single woman could live without a vibrator, does rather indicate that she does need a vibrator to get off, in the absence of a partner,.

I wasn't criticising the use of sex toys.

snowflake69 · 19/11/2010 19:00

Sorry then herbeautitude misconstrued your post then. I just have had the experience of my friends ex dumping her cause she used a vibe. He said why do you need that? I just use my hand why cant you etc? He made her feel like a complete freak when he obviously had some weird issues.

I just think anything in moderation. Live and let live when it comes to sex I think. I know some porn is maybe forced but then a lot of things in our everyday lives are very unethical, even things like buying your dinner from Tescos.

I think if women do like porn or whatever they shouldnt be afraid to admit it. If they dont fair enough. I think the reason why there are less men in womens mags as some women do like to think they are above it (If you dont like it fine) but I hate the people that say I am not that shallow, I go for personality etc and then berate women that do go for it. As I personally think that is what holds some women back from being fully open about their sexuality or what turns them on (I dont mean publicly I mean to friends, themselves or their partners).

MillyR · 19/11/2010 19:02

Everything in life is not okay in moderation; slavery, cannibalism, war, abuse, famine and so on.

Yes but Milly R porn isnt like any of the above as there are many people doing it willingly. Same as looking at pics millions of people do that willingly. Its a bit different to your above list.

wukter · 19/11/2010 19:08

'I know some porn is maybe forced but then a lot of things in our everyday lives are very unethical, even things like buying your dinner from Tescos.'

I can imagine a cock and get satisfaction, but try as I might, imagining a big plate of bread and cheese doesn't douse my hunger.

MillyR · 19/11/2010 19:08

I was wondering if the period drama thing was about the fact that male characters can be more androgynous in their behaviour than characters in contemporary stuff.

snowflake69 · 19/11/2010 19:11

Yeah but wutker you can buy organic etc. Go without things that are not grown/made in UK.

You can not buy clothes from h and m, next, primark, gap and loads of others but most people still do even though they know they are from bad sources. They dont have to dress in those brands etc.

There are loads of products that are not essentials made in awful conditions but it never stops people from buying them really.

MillyR · 19/11/2010 19:14

SF, I really don't agree with the points you're making, but I really don't want to get into a debate over pornography because I think this thread has become a conversation about female sexual desire and how that is represented and catered to (or not catered to.

I don't actually see why I should have to go through the ethics of porn in the same way that I think ethically and carefully before I buy half a pound of butter or a tshirt. I feel that I keep being pushed into discussing the ethics of porn because the people who buy porn won't look at the ethics of it and find ways of changing it. I think the reason people are happy to discuss it with SGB is because she is looking at ethical issues.

wukter · 19/11/2010 19:16

You can choose not to use porn AT ALL, which is much simpler.

Period dramas, I think it's to do with all that simmering tension. Mirrors foreplay on a psychological level.
