Why not have a 360 degree perve?)

I am often amazed that in modern society we have so called newspapers with naked ladies on it Hmm
Please sign the "Turn your back on page 3" petition here

Sadly, I'm not surprised by newspapers with 'page 3' girls- I'm more surprised they still get to keep their knickers on. Angry

Petition signed.

wubblybubbly · 16/11/2010 09:04

Signed too.

tiredofchallenge · 16/11/2010 09:20

They're talking about this on Radio 5 now, it's their phone-in topic.

southeastastra · 16/11/2010 09:21

what's grim (imo anyway) is now i'm older the girls look so young - they're just kids themselves. makes me uneasy

wubblybubbly · 16/11/2010 09:30

Wasn't it also The Sun who had the countdown to Emma Watson's 16th birthday? Sickening.

I also think it's really interesting looking at the recreated 1970s/2010 pose. Noticeable (to me) that the 1970s woman:

  • has much smaller tits
  • is less slender/less 'perfect' eg slightly looser under-arms, crease where her legs join her torso
  • looks more relaxed, rather than explicitly 'come get me' in her gaze
  • has a more realistic, blotchy skin tone.
  • looks much older

Mix of changing expectations/increased sexualisation and increased availability of photoshop, but pretty depressing.

msrisotto · 16/11/2010 09:43

The model in the modern version of the pose looks really pornified to me - mostly in her face, the make up and the expression. It's certainly less pleasant than the original photo.

Yy - agree msrisotto - something about the lowered chin/looking up through hair pose...
Desmond Morris would say the 'over the shoulder' look is also meant to echo boobs. Or bums, forget which.

nickypomtimes · 16/11/2010 10:49

My God, that is so fucking depressing.

Agree with Iamcounting - the 70s one look like a grown up and has boobs a bit like mine (ie; average!) In fact, she looks like a real person! The modern one looks so young and so constructed.

TheFeministParent · 16/11/2010 11:22

Yuck! Even to a complete fuckwit I struggle to see the point of page three.

Lio · 16/11/2010 14:50

I have signed.

Page 3 - 360 degree view on your ipad FFS.

Anyone know if you have to be a certain age to download that app? I suppose you don't have to be a certain age to buy The Sun so teens etc buy it?

MrsClown · 16/11/2010 20:04

I have signed and so has my husband.

do you remember the thread a few months back about one of the dads perving over it in a playground at school pickup and getting arsey when a MNer asked him to turn the page?

God that was a depressing thread.

breathtakingben · 16/11/2010 22:01

You have to have an ipad tabouleh - £400.

What's more, you'll need internet access, and if a teen has internet access, a topless woman really is the thin end of the wedge.

Sakura · 17/11/2010 07:35

urgh, have you clicked on the 3D woman. You move your mouse forward and she turns one way, move it the other and you can move her the other way, and all the while she's blinking and smiling at you

It freaked me out. It's like a robotic, teutonic woman.
WHo needs real women?

Sakura · 17/11/2010 07:39

is it me or does the modern version look really sort of angry or depressed compared to the 70s woman?

Beachcomber · 17/11/2010 08:45

Have signed.

The 360° woman freaked me out too.

I can remember feeling very uncomfortable with page 3 as a child. I hate hate hate the fact that this stuff is considered innocuous - it is just training young girls to think that it is normal for men to objectify them and young men to think the same.

The pervy gits who leer over the stuff in everyday settings such as buses, cafés, shops, etc. whilst slobbering 'look at the tits on that!' are exposing the rest of us normal folk (and especially children) to porn.

I would line them up against the wall and shoot them in the knackers one by one. Being rendered unable to critically think by the patriarchy will not be considered a valid plea for mercy.

sethstarkaddersmum · 17/11/2010 09:33

what was interesting on the other thread was that a few posters really did say quite explicitly that it must be ok because it's in a newspaper therefore it can't be (even soft) porn. Which absolutely proved the argument that having page 3 in a newspaper normalises this stuff IMO.

AliceWorld · 17/11/2010 09:59

Something about to be on women's hour about this...

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 17/11/2010 10:31

it's just freakish.

we're used to it because we've grown up with it and it's our own 'culture' but look at it from the outside and it's so ridiculous.

english men need to see a pair of titties in their newspaper everyday. breasts that babies feed from and men have got some kind of infantile obsession with need to be displayed on the third page of their newspaper.

newspapers have pictures of a part of the woman's body in them.

maybe they could spread the practice - a pair of tits on your menu, memo's at work with tits attached, a pair of tits with your happy meal.

wtf.

JessinAvalon · 17/11/2010 10:32

Thanks for the reminder AliceWorld. I'm not sure if I dare listen. I've come to the conclusion that WH tries to present a balanced argument but, in so doing, tips over the other way.

As "Woman's Hour" it would be great if they could present things from a feminist perspective but that is usually only ever touched on with subjects like this (IMHO). I might listen later after I've got hold of some blood pressure tablets.
