Hello

Been saying for ages that it'd be nice to have an area for just saying hi, letting off some steam and sharing the little things that don't warrant a whole thread.

So, I'll start...

My brother made me :o:o:o last night when we were talking about some crap sexist song. And he said (in all honesty) - well this is just one of the millions of ways the patriarchy keeps itself going.

Also got the updated email from the Feminism in London conference this morning - can't wait.

Anyone else?

teenstrop

Confronted with that form I would react thus:

Give it the eyebrow -> Hmm

Then harumph

Have a bit of a rant to DH about it while he looked bemused

Then think no more of it

SQ about your job question they can advertise specifically for women. Where I work we have a lot of men who work in Saudi. There's some garble at the bottom of the job ad about why but I can't remember what it says. I know a woman (muslim who can speak and write arabic and has visited Saudi several times, which is much more than most of the men who work out there for us) who applied for one of these jobs and was declined immediately as she's a woman. In our company there are the occasional women who go out as consultants but they don't get any of the perks like tax free salary.

LilBB · 09/02/2011 19:59

I meant specifically for men!!

SardineQueen · 09/02/2011 20:02

Thanks for that LilBB very interesting.

I'm still harrumphing though Grin

AliceWorld · 09/02/2011 20:14

Can I share today's harrumph. Yoof on the bus, playing music loudly, singing some lyrics that culminated in a shouted bitch, then discussing playing some song with pimp in the title. Then when a young women with them expressed her opinion about music, saying 'this bitch knows about music'. Then some more got on and were asking a young woman to blow them, going on and on (I think they knew each other). And they looked like my friends and I looked when we were that age, therefore I would have felt a bit of nostalgia, but my male friends would never have spoken to me like that. Mind you that's nothing to go on as I was also assaulted while I slept by someone that looked like we looked. I know that's a silly thing to bring into it really, but you know when you merrily see young people and feel a commonality. Anyway harumph!

LilBB · 09/02/2011 20:14

I moan about it at work all the time. On one hand they should get the best person for the job (surely that's best for the customer too?) but then I think why should a woman work somewhere where she will get no respect and treated like a second class citizen.

As we get an awful lot of money through the Saudi contracts there is no reason why our big bosses would rock the boat especially as it is a male dominated industry. When I'm MD I will try to get things changed.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 09/02/2011 21:04

My harumph of the day is that a very good friend of mine has gone back to her abusive husband. I thought she had and today she confirmed it (indirectly) in a text message. Don't know why. She deserves better. Sad

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 09/02/2011 22:27

Gutting when that happens HandDived. Sad

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 09/02/2011 22:48

It is. She is such a lovely person and he is such an arse! I am speaking to her at the weekend so will try and get the low-down (providing he isn't around).

Prolesworth, thanks for posting the cartoon satirising the American law prioritising an unborn foetus over the pregnant woman. How chilling!

Could one reason for that law could be that, in the eyes of some anti-abortionists, a foetus has a chance of being male i.e. "human", whereas the woman is female and therefore seen by them as "non-human"?

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 10/02/2011 14:10

I have a new humf. A local business plot has been bought by somebody who is planning on opening a fun house for princesses. The softplay bit will be designed like a fairy princess castle and as well as that there will be opportunities for little girls to have their hair and make up done as well as other pampery sort of things.

HerBeX · 10/02/2011 14:16

God that's pretty shocking Alice.

I can't imagine any of our male friends talking to us like that when we were teenagers.

The sheer lack of respect that denotes - do young girls really not realise that ?

sakura · 10/02/2011 14:21

I went out for a drink by myself tonight with a book. Behind me was sat a group of American GIs talking about which bitch off CSI they'd like to fuck and how

vesuvia, I think yes, feminists may have written about men not wanting women to have any power over males, which is one of the reasons behind not allowing women to abort. I remember a post of dittany's along that line.

That's bad Teenstrop...!

On a lighter note have you seen the FEMINISM IS BURGLING THE COUNTRYSIDE thread. I think that blogger can go down on the list of Nice Men I'm compiling.

HerBeX · 10/02/2011 14:22

Is it a long list, Sakura?
Grin

sakura · 11/02/2011 06:34

Yes it is, there were at least five time I looked

DISCLAIMER FOR LURKERS: I don't actually think there are only five nice men in the world

It is difficult. I ignore cos there are plenty not ignoring. I wonder whether it is more important to counter for the lurkers. Having read every fucking post (I'm poorly in bed) I do think threads like that are useful for making the people who express these views look like idiots. To me that's what they do. I can't imagine anyone come along and think 'wow what insight' from the CiF stylee posters.

Maybe carry on the conversation as if you can't see their posts? Reclaim the thread?

They're probably in it together? There are several posters around at the mo with exactly the same posting style.

FWIW I think people replying are doing a good job. Just restating stuff and not falling into the trap of the personal insult thing.

Thanks am on the mend Smile

I am getting in a very bad mood with all of this. I actually get quite angry, it doesn't do my blood pressure any good Sad

I wonder if the right thing to do is, after a certain point, everyone just ignore them. It's so hard not to respond though.
