Hello

Been saying for ages that it'd be nice to have an area for just saying hi, letting off some steam and sharing the little things that don't warrant a whole thread.

So, I'll start...

My brother made me :o:o:o last night when we were talking about some crap sexist song. And he said (in all honesty) - well this is just one of the millions of ways the patriarchy keeps itself going.

Also got the updated email from the Feminism in London conference this morning - can't wait.

Anyone else?

Moon on a stick Elephants...

Yes - my natural state is clumsy and tearful. this theory doesn't work so well for us clearly. :)

Evening all Smile

So, does anyone know if it is legal to advertise a job in a way that does not meet UK anti-discrimination legislation, if the job being advertised is in a different country?

I had a fab time on the tube this morn. First the bloke next to me was perusing page 3 for ages, then I spotted a really random job ad. Great!

Harumph to that.

Was harumphing all over the shop this am. The other commuters were most peturbed!

The ad was for jobs in qatar, apparently they will relocate people and provide accomodation which comes in two sorts - "bachelor" or "family"!!!!

Presumably single women need not apply Hmm Are women allowed to work in qatar? i don't know anything about it out there.

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 20:29

I've seen adverts in my field like that that get emailed round. Don't know the legal position but made me harumph too

SardineQueen · 08/02/2011 20:32

This was in the Metro though. Free paper with huge circulation. Naughty I think.

Harumph.

SardineQueen · 08/02/2011 20:33

alice when your emails go around do they definitely just want men? I was wondering whether the term "bachelor accomodation" was just an accidentally old fashioned way of saying single persons accomodation. But OTOH they managed to say "family" rather than "married" so I think I was giving them the benefit of the doubt too much.

harumph.

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 20:41

I'm pretty sure they say men. Well they don't say women need not apply but its all framed with he and bringing your wife with you and all that jazz. Will see if I can find one...

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 20:44

Interestingly this one in Saudi specifically wants women

(Not my field btw)

Still looking...

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 20:54

Can't find any Sad

SardineQueen · 08/02/2011 20:58

I'm going to harumph off to bed.

I was really tempted to ring them up and say I wanted to apply, to see what they said to me!

AliceWorld · 08/02/2011 21:00

I was tempted to apply once for one I saw just to show them (as they just put it in the bin)

I'm going to harumph at the TV before bed. It's the men's perspective on that Gypsy Wedding programme which is going to really make me harumph.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 08/02/2011 21:01

They're obviously looking for Cliff Richard, the only person still living surely who would ask for "bachelor accommodation".

Lovely harumphing btw SQ, you're an example to us all :)

Me too Alice, I've got this particular harumph scheduled in advance.

There's nothing like a good harumph before bed.

Here too though in a way. Despite not having any intention of hiring a cleaner I am boycotting all cleaning companies called 'Women who clean' in their various round the houses guises.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/02/2011 22:08

Erm.. do I need to name change? Wink

Hypothetical situation Wink

If your DD1 brought back a typed up copy of a form you filled in at the beginning of the school year would you be annoyed if you noticed that the admin staff had changed the contact order to put your DH first and you second but with a 1 next to your name indicating that you are to be contacted first.

In this 'scenario' the DH is a stepfather and he's down as 'other relative'. Where as I'm you would be down as mother. And the person who filled in the form is damn sure she put her name first because she always does on account of having the parental responsibility for that particular child.

Unrulysun · 09/02/2011 17:33

Is it a 'typed up copy' or a printout from a database? Because the school management information systems do this kind of thing. I'm not sure it it's because they're set up to read alphabetically rather than numerically but if I had 50p for everytime I've realised I was phoning a grandparent (contact 2) because they were first on the list rather than a parent I'd have about £3.50. So I think it's probably shit IT rather than overt patriarchy. :)

Of course if it is a typed copy it's weird and you're right to be cross.

Omg20 · 09/02/2011 17:36

@smells

I wouldn't really be annoyed as long as someone was contacted in the event of an emergency. If this person is not responsible enough to be contacted then they wouldn't/shouldn't be on there. :)

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 09/02/2011 17:49

I can't lie to your people, this isn't a hypothetical situation.

It could be alphabetical - my name does come before DHs in the alphabet but they have us as Mr His Name and Mrs My Name.

HerBeX · 09/02/2011 18:06

Oh I know a couple where their DS has his mum's surname.

So his dad is permanently being put down as "stepfather". He is not his stepfather, he's his father. But the school just can't get their heads around that. His father? Shurely shome mishtake?

So far, they've explained three times and filled in three forms and each time it comes back, someone has put him in as a stepfather.

Idiots.
