Hello

Been saying for ages that it'd be nice to have an area for just saying hi, letting off some steam and sharing the little things that don't warrant a whole thread.

So, I'll start...

My brother made me :o:o:o last night when we were talking about some crap sexist song. And he said (in all honesty) - well this is just one of the millions of ways the patriarchy keeps itself going.

Also got the updated email from the Feminism in London conference this morning - can't wait.

Anyone else?

do you come from a whole family of feminists E&M? I think you mentioned on another thread that your mum is a feminist.

ISNT · 25/09/2010 11:07

Oh yes would love a chat thread on here Smile

Just marking my place though as I'm going out now

Morning all.
Just a little rant from watching tv last night.
Katie Taylor has just won Best Boxer In The World Competition (sorry, not sure of the correct title!). She was interviewed on the most watched chat show on Irish tv last night. With her (male) coach. I asked DP if Katie was a male boxing champion would the coach be on to answer the difficult questions. No. Unsurprisingly.

She still goes to her original club and spars a bit there. Does she embarrass the men with her skill, wondered the host? FFS! She's World Champion.

Just a woman, for all that. Those poor blokes must be mortified, being beaten by a woman.

AliceWorld · 25/09/2010 12:53

Ooo great idea. Hello!

I got my email this AM too. Didn't realise there was an attachment so thanks for mentioning it.

I'm going to hopefully be at MWR in Manc, got other stuff I should be doing but have been sad to miss the London one before as that takes far more planning for me logistically.

Yes there are sooo many things I end up muttering at on the TV, good example wukter. I recall a while ago on sports personality of the year, Adrian Chiles asked Nicole Cooke (a British cyclist who was absolutely at the top of her field internationally, totally dominating all the big races) whether she grazed her knees falling off her bike Angry. Would they ask Lance Armstrong that?!? Interestingly the male-dominated cycling world also spotted it.

ISNT · 25/09/2010 14:50

Oh balls I've lost my original email from the feminist london people and am going to have to queue up to get in

Angry at self!

omaoma · 25/09/2010 14:57

hello!
What's the Feminism in London conference? More an amateur feminist myself.
Loving the Best Boxer in the World competition by the way.
The Guardian magazine's 'Gods of Science' feature made me steam a bit last week. not only all men, but all white. How f*cking surprising. i guess Hawking is in a wheelchair so maybe they think his disability covers them for every other 'minority'.

Presumably they're preparing for their superbonus "Goddesses of Science" feature shortly omaoma(was it really called that btw??)

It's beginning to seem that way SSM! Never talked to my brother about it til recently but have sent him the odd post from Tiger Beatdown and IBTP, plus he read A Room of One's Own so he could understand what I saw going on about. :o God I love my family who only occasionally say things that make me go aaargh. Wink

Does Best Boxer in the World embarrass men by beating them? laugh or cry?

Did anyone see that feature in the guardian today? Some bloke explaining how despite the fact that he basically stalked this woman into living with him, and then claimed to be "scared of commitment" after she had his child.

"She certainly didn't expect me to invite myself to Scotland for the weekend a fortnight later. But I cajoled, chivvied, pestered and ultimately begged. Remarkably, it worked. I went up the following weekend. And the one after that. Then almost every weekend for three years... But I ground Wendy down and after three years we set up home together in Brighton."

But this is my favourite section: "Then Wendy announced that one day she would like to have the same name as her son. I told her that calling them both Fred would be fraught with complication, but I had got the message. "Just you wait," I replied mysteriously, and again when she mentioned it months later, and again some months after that."

Feminism. Never. Happened. "one day she would like to have the same name as her son" FFS.

The boxing and cycling anecdotes remind me of the clip I saw on TV of an interview from the 1960s following the announcement of the discovery of pulsars. I think the first question from the male interviewer to the woman who discovered it (Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell) was "Do you have a boyfriend?"

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/09/2010 19:08

Shock Shock Shock vesuvia!

Always make me puke when they interview female sports stars and the interviewer is at great pains to emphasise how "feminine" they are, or "every inch a woman" despite being so unnatural as to be good at tennis/swimming/running around.

Oh my gawd saw the link to this on Shakesville.

"She says women can't truly love themselves until they love and understand all of their "girly parts. Plus, she says, "the vagina is way more interesting than the pinky finger or belly button."
Keep reading as Dr. Rankin shares 14 fascinating facts about the vagina."

More interesting than the belly button you say? Hmm Shock Grin

Oooh yay, a chat thread! Good idea.

I wish I could go to the London conference but I have to go to a christening that weekend up in Yorkshire. So disappointing, I've never been to one before and I really wanted to go!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 26/09/2010 12:39

What about going to Reclaim the Night in November Kitty?

OP posts:
KittyTwoShoes · 26/09/2010 13:12

I think that the evening thing was going to be a MN pub thing rather thna the official FIL thing. So that people who weren't doing the whole day could have a chance to meet up as well.

vesuvia · 26/09/2010 14:56

threelittlepebbles wrote - "I have just joined my very first feminist group in real life."

That's great! Have you been to a meeting yet? If so, how was it?

sethstarkaddersmum · 26/09/2010 16:32

it's not the one I've just set up is it 3LittlePebbles?
(if so you won't have been to a meeting because there haven't been any Grin)

We have 7 whole members! And I haven't even done any serious spamming of likely victims yet.

sparky159 · 26/09/2010 17:38
