Coping with Trolls and Derailers

There have been some very persistent posters on here recently - some of them funny (unintentionally), and some of them not - dragging threads off track so we have to go back and explain something over and over again. I'm all for a lively debate, but there always comes a point when you realise that they are not listening at all, are on a blatant wind-up mission, or are just insulting posters with no intention of debating the original issues.

If we don't want this to happen, and bearing in mind that some people spot the pattern quicker than others, I was going to suggest that we have something like a warning word/phrase that could alert other posters to the fact that they are wasting their time. What do you think? Is this a stupid idea?

Saying "ah, a troll" just adds fuel to the fire you see. But if you were to say "I blame Princess Michael of Kent" or something, and then everyone disappears...well it might work? Grin

I think it is particularly telling that FOSH are unable to show any compassion to the victims of their leader, SH, even when their leader himself has made it clear that he has deep deep hatred for prostitutes and women in general.

It is sad that they can not show compassion to the victims of prostitution, no matter how much they obviously do not like them.

Aitch · 13/08/2010 23:36

what rot, woodstone, we engaged with your very interesting question about the motivation of the prostitutes at the funeral/friends who dressed as prostitutes was. it was when you started bullshitting about the bible that you got very boring indeed.

anyway, good question dit. where IS your compassion for the victims of prostitution? or do you think they don't exist?

SolidGoldBrass · 13/08/2010 23:44

Lots of rubbish people have written equally rubbish books. Horsley was as much of a loser as a writer as he was a human being. If he really fancied himself as an eeeeevil satirist decadent monster, he might at least have written some stuff about buttfucking puppies. It would at least have broken the monotony of the 'I hate gurls. I'm really shocking. Look at meeeeee! I HATE GURLS'.

The sex workers he visited who weren't trafficked or enslaved probably didn't mind having him as a punter as he was probably the sort who couldn't get it up, talked rubbish and sobbed for a bit and then overtipped and left. So, basically, a rather inadequate and not very nice individual - possibly sparking this debate is about the most interesting thing he ever did. And he had to wait until he was dead to do it.

woodstonobserver · 13/08/2010 23:47

Dittany - he did not rape a thousand women!

He wrote a book. You might not like the subject matter, but in the end it is "just a book" which he promoted, as an artist, in an unique way.

I never met him, but lots of my girlfriends think he was amazing. They tell me he was gentle and kind and, above all, an excellent listener.

He may well have done things that you do not approve of, but that doesn't give you the right to accuse him of raping a thousand women.

Where is your compassion?

And this is one of them.

To my knowledge Sebastian didn't destroy, dismember, rape or kill any women.
Sure he visited prostitutes, he didn't force them and in many cases didn't have to pay them either as quite few were his friends,so not really a punter as such.
dittany..comparing the KKK grandmaster and Sebastian is just ridiculous.
I am amazed how people like you can attack somebody you didn't even know, other than by the snippets you have read in such a vehement fashion.
Why don't you read his book.

nasdaq · 13/08/2010 23:51

Nope, they have not answered the question have they?

Can we just assume that neither have any compassion for the victims of prostitution?

slightreturn · 13/08/2010 23:52

SolidGoldBrass....did you know him? it's a simple question yes or no..

Oh God, they are back. One question Slightreturn - if someone were to write about their fantasies about dismembering Jews/black people, then sewing up their bodies, throwing away their 'useless' genitals and voiceboxes and then keeping them to beat and rape, would you think that was fine and great and a wonderful use of poetic expression? Do you think Stephen Fry et al would go to their funeral?

HerBeatitude · 13/08/2010 23:56

Oh God the de-railers are going to turn this into another 1000 post thread about the tiresome SH aren't they?

Shall we run away somewhere else?

I am building a tunnel to a thread where they can't reach us...

ColdComfortFarm · 13/08/2010 23:59

You are entirely correct HB. I am sorry. OK, back to the issue at hand.

woodstonobserver · 14/08/2010 00:00

Aitch, I've got plenty of compassion for the victims of prostitution. A couple of my friends are escorts and I live near a red light area. I have considered it myself. Sometime I walk through the red light area on the way home. I always say hello to the girls as I pass. Sometimes they proposition my boyfriend and I and we always politely decline. The police say we should not talk to them but we don't think that ignoring them is right. We always treat them with respect.

slightreturn · 14/08/2010 00:00

it was hardly written to be taken seriously..!
this seems to be the problem here you are all taking some of the things he wrote as his desired intent. the are comedians out there who say things in joke about women, jews, blacks, muslims etc etc...do you believe they mean everything they say too..come on!..Stephen fry was there because he was his friend.

First, apologies to ButterflyEffect. I'm sorry I didn't see the succinct point you made in your post (Thu 12-Aug-10 01:47:22) before I started to ramble on about the same point a short while later.

Second, thanks to ladysoandso, who is clearly speaking from experience.

Third, thanks to Prolesworth for all her links. Like some others on this thread, I had never heard of SH until I read his obituary in the paper a short while ago.

Finally, thanks to the 'friends'/'fans' of SH who have just highlighted how delighted I am never to have met him.

nasdaq · 14/08/2010 00:04

From SH ...Why don't you read his book.

Hmmm.... let us consider the suggestion

.. Well, if we read his book then we would help support the commercial exploitation of women and in turn support human trafficking and exploitation?

... Well some of us have daughters.

... I guess that is a no then.

Aitch · 14/08/2010 00:05

woodstone. the women to whom you say hello... SH fantasised about chopping them up, removing any extraneous material 'voicebox, genitalia etc' and fucking them in their faces.

he really does not deserve my compassion.

ColdComfortFarm · 14/08/2010 00:06

God Princess, you speak the truth. Me too - so happy not have been part of this grisly set. Obv Stephen Fry is massively uncomfortable about women. On Q1 he is so upset and repelled by any mention of womens bodies. As for Will Self, well, frankly, I'm not surprised. I suspect a lot of SH fans are self0hating snobs, and of course, misogynists. I know one personally, though not that well, who seemed to regard him as a secular saint. She very sadly falls into the self-hating category. I don't know if she has read what he really thinks of women though.

slightreturn · 14/08/2010 00:06

well dont buy it get it from the library! frightened you might find some of it interesting and indeed very funny are you?
oh, and i have 2 daughters.....

nasdaq · 14/08/2010 00:10

From SR - Sure he visited prostitutes, he didn't force them and in many cases didn't have to pay them either as quite few were his friends,so not really a punter as such....

hmmm...

I am interested in how you can say he did not force women to have sex, where you there?

he did provide a guide to whoring, tried not to pay, had a loaded revolver by his bed?

Mates rates then?

ColdComfortFarm · 14/08/2010 00:12

I have read his blog thanks. It's quite repulsive enough. Why should I read more violent, misogynistic fantasies from someone whose idea of humour (apparently, according to his apologists) is to cut women up with chainsaws, throw away their voiceboxes and genitals, sew up the remainder of their bodies to form an 'it' that he can keep, beat and rape. Or possibly I might be falling about with laughter at the line that the only good thing ever to come out of a woman's mouth is SH's cock. Oh my poor aching sides. God, you really can tell a lot about a person from the company they keep, can't you.
