Coping with Trolls and Derailers

There have been some very persistent posters on here recently - some of them funny (unintentionally), and some of them not - dragging threads off track so we have to go back and explain something over and over again. I'm all for a lively debate, but there always comes a point when you realise that they are not listening at all, are on a blatant wind-up mission, or are just insulting posters with no intention of debating the original issues.

If we don't want this to happen, and bearing in mind that some people spot the pattern quicker than others, I was going to suggest that we have something like a warning word/phrase that could alert other posters to the fact that they are wasting their time. What do you think? Is this a stupid idea?

Saying "ah, a troll" just adds fuel to the fire you see. But if you were to say "I blame Princess Michael of Kent" or something, and then everyone disappears...well it might work? Grin

Those quotes made me feel sick. I never particularly liked Stephen Fry and Will Self to start with.

ladysoandso · 13/08/2010 20:15

They bought the tart with a heart dandy package sr.
None of his original female friends even went to his funeral ....work that one out...

woodstonobserver · 13/08/2010 20:29

Dittany, you never met the guy!

As a man he may well been flawed, but his friends do not recognise the monster that you portray.

Why can't you have the humanity to accept that you might just be wrong and that his friends who knew him might be right?

Please let the man rest in peace.

slightreturn · 13/08/2010 20:38

ladysoandso.....why dont you just let us know exactly who you are?..if you knew Seb as long as you say, maybe you could tell us more about the man..

thecatspjs · 13/08/2010 20:39

I've been lurking for a while, trying to be brave enough to post on the feminism threads (I am an utter coward, me). This might be my first and last post, but I wouldn't be the life long feminist I consider myself to be if I didn't have the gumption to say well done to all of you brilliant women who have spent so much time refuting such complete batshit theories/posts over the last few days - I would have posted on the other thread, but left it too late and it is now closed for business.

Bravo to you all.

(I'm going for a lie down now to get over the excitment of finally posting!)

msrisotto · 13/08/2010 20:42

Glad you decided to join us cats!

claig · 13/08/2010 20:44

well done thecatspjs. Once you have started posting, you can't stop. Look forward to seeing more of your posts in the future. Smile

Besom · 13/08/2010 20:45

Those things the Horseley person said are monstrous.

I was thinking the funeral protest was out of order. Having read those quotes I can understand why she did it and I'm glad she did.

claig · 13/08/2010 20:49

I had bever heard of him. But I am surprised that he got any media time at all with views like that. But I'm not surprised that many of the luvvies and avant-garde types were fans of his.

I have been astounded by the "trolls/derailers" which have appeared in our new Feminist section.

But, I've found it has enlightened me/confirmed to me that indeed these deeply sexist views I've read about are indeed true.

Well done to those of you who tirelessly debate away.

ISNT · 13/08/2010 21:27

Hello catspjs, I like your name Smile

thecatspjs · 13/08/2010 21:51

Hello everyone back. It's nice to be here.

It's always a bit of a shock when so many of my friends and relatives claim not to be feminists - it's great to be able to come on here and find people so much more coherent than I am, but with such similar views. You almost get used to feminism being the default setting, but then when you venture out into the wider internet, it takes a bit of a readjustment to find again that it's not IYSWIM.

Anyway, this is beginning to be a bit of a hijack, so will be off lurking again until I can find something useful to add.

nasdaq · 13/08/2010 22:43

Welcome catspjs.

I have to say that I do despair that the FOSH fail yet to realise that we can read and interpret the hate speech of SH perfectly well.

He abused prostitutes, he hated women.

He ruined lives, he had a ruined life.

We do not need his so called friends on here.

The evidence is all out there.

I am not impressed one bit that he supposedly had female friends.

How many female friends in Serbia do you think sick seb had?

slightreturn · 13/08/2010 23:08

nasdaq... you know nothing of the man at all.
How many male friends in Serbia do you have..assuming you are female.....your point being what exactly..

HerBeatitude · 13/08/2010 23:23

Oh look, a derailer.

How apt.

I think it is particularly telling that this board welcomes new members who agree with their views but ignore genuine posts/questions from those to do not share their views. It's sad that they cannot show compassion for a dead man who wrote a book, no matter how much they might dislike that book.

nasdaq · 13/08/2010 23:31

Slightreturn - I have numbered some points for you. Read them slowly and let them sink in. I really hope that the points help you in your understanding....

1.Hate speech is wrong, really very very wrong.

2.It really does not matter how many so called friends you have, female or male. Hate Speech is still wrong, even if you claim you have friends who have been targets of Hate Speech.

3.SH made disparaging remarks about serbian women.

4.Prostitution ruins lives, it really does not matter how you try dress it up - and make it into a transaction, or suggest that women have a choice and choose to go into prostitution for the sake of a gucci dress.

  1. Hundreds of thousand of women and children are enslaved as prostitutes. It is a huge business.
  1. If you have one ounce of humanity then then you do not endorse people who have practised Hate Speech and used prostitutes.

I think that imagining the greyscale thing in action right now is working for me.
